- In the Key of Bach is a musical documentary directed and written by Hilan Warshaw. The program, presented by The Halle Foundation, employs both extensive performance footage by the ASO and a variety of film techniques to bring the viewer closer to Johann Sebastian Bach as an individual and a creator. The program’s structure consists of 24 short films detailing the life and work of Bach.

One thing about Bach, especially as time in Leipzig, is that’s with all the talk about how incredible it is that he wrote a Cantata every week… it must been incredibly stressful for the poor guy.
Really think about it, despite being a genius (and he indeed was), he was facing incredible pressure of not only writing this music at incredible quality, but he had to do it with lyrics that weren’t poetic to work with; that he had to compose during his off time from teaching at a boy’s school to teach music, Latin, Greek, and reading from the Bible; living in noisy, cramped conditions with his family of multiple children in said school; took on commissions usually at the very last minute, without giving him several months of warning; had to pay very expensive rent payments while earning very little; and not only that, the city council of Leipzig had often complain about his musical style for being too extravagant for their simple taste. The poor man must’ve been stressed nearly 24/7.
The real miracle is that he was able to write anything at all under such conditions.
thanks for that insight... i am editing a couple documentaries i shot, at home, with screaming children (god bless them!) and no income coming in ... at least i live in the jungle of bali so the outer environ is considerably less urban-noisy...
I dont think he actually had to writhe the cantata himself, he could use material that already existed. He had to present it though, I think that is actually much more of a challenge considering he certainly didnt have the best musicians around.
Bach has been my favorite musician since I was a child and I’ve listened to most of his instrumental music and read what there is to know about his life. I see a lot of comments here complaining about the ladies commenting on Bach’s portrait. Personally I find their comments interesting and even insightful and fairly accurate.
Very well done, re-enactments and all. Bach's musical output is second to none. His title should be, Chief Musician to God.
No words about. Many thanks GPB!!!
i LOVE to hear Bach praised.
His music calms and harmonizes my brain waves!
Google spatiotemporal brain dynamics during recognition of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach:
"Remarkably, the recognition of Bach's original music ignited a widespread music processing brain network comprising primary auditory cortex, superior temporal gyrus, insula, frontal operculum, cingulate gyrus, orbitofrontal cortex, basal ganglia and hippocampus. Furthermore, both activity and connectivity increased over time, following the evolution and unfolding of Bach's original patterns."
The best documentary on Bach I have seen. Great performances and choice of music. Creative and humorous visuals.
Sublime and Serene Music Forever !
This young violinist...
BACH is to Music what ACTG is to Life.
Robert Spano, Thank you for leading this team of wonderful artists and bringing the life and music of Bach so much closer to us. The performances of these familiar works are full of new things to hear. The visuals invite the heart as well as the eye. The story and narration are warm and welcoming. Such an enjoyable and enriching gift all of you have given us.
Wunderbar. Danke.
Wonderful and imaginative, plus a great soundtrack.
fantastic 👏👏👏
What is the organ piece @ 1:24:24? It's beautiful, the kind that I would love to be able to sit in a church pew, listen to, and silently pray and meditate.
I want to know the adagio organ piece, I would like to play it. Does anyone know it.
BWV 622
@@SeanRossHarvey Thank you, SeanRossHarvey!
Marvellous, many thanks.
Our pleasure! Thank you for watching GPB
Some people like listening to themselves talking. Saying nothing, just talking. Let the music speak! Give space to the Voice of Bach. This video may then work.
Easy, this was created by a female. It’s for attention, not the glory of God.
I agree about the reenactments. They should be edited out of this otherwise fine program
There's no bwv title for the organ piece. Someone somewhere must know what it is.
most unterratet - but in my impinion the best composer of alll times
Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor is such a powerful piece! However, I did not care for the way the oculist portion was done. If my eye surgeon looked like a member of the band KISS, I would not have had him operate on me.
G'day, GPB! 12:37 I once played under a conductor who said, "There's no way you can play Bach and not believe in God."
I would like to know about Bach's direct descendants today
I could be wrong, but I don’t think he has any descendants living now. The last descendent which I believe was a daughter, passed away in the early 19th century.
There are descendants and at least one young woman with whom I interacted on internet is organist…
Why on earth would you add the reenactment scenes? Please take all of them out. They bring the entire documentary into amateur hour. This could be great but the re-enactments have to go.
I agree. The re-enactments are sophomoric!
Bach's music is eternal, speaking for itself. I was looking for an hour on Bach's contribution to music theory, rather than narrative on his life.
Why not? Why are some people so orthodox. Re-enactments are okay. Bach was also a fun person.
What's the last piece called? 1:50:00
"Sheep May Safely Graze"
Otra vez BAch en piano, ponen un montonde guita y son incapaces de alquilar un cembalo
Difficult to watch. Parts are good, parts are completely unnecessary. Re-do entire video, make it 1hr maximum.
As has been said : not all composers believe in God but they all believe in Bach.
And therefore believe in God through Bach. He may turn out to be the greatest evangelist who ever lived, who brought more people into God's presence after he died than during his lifetime. Solo Do Gloria!!
Deo!
@@deancamf Bach is sometimes called "the fifth evangelist".
Nice selection of Bach's most famous pieces for the novice listener. The "acting" was unnecessary. It's difficult to make a documentary when so little personal detail is known. For me playing Bach for decades, the great mystery is how anyone could come up with what he did, it's a miracle, And I'm a former physicist and not religious at all.
Così Gli disse la Morte: "" so chi sei... so del Tuo suono... Tu mi hai sconfitto. Con la Tua Opera ho posato il Mio scettro ""
Unfortunately the comments of those on this video and the theatrical is mediocre. Why not just speak of him and the truth. Made it almost unwatchable. I fast forwarded it whenever the lady’s would speak. It’s purely irrelevant to his documentary.
I couldn’t watch this last 33 minutes. Edit all those ridiculous people out and just tell the story of the Master, otherwise it’s a joke. Sorry for telling it like it is but he wouldn’t want it any other way.
Downright sacrilege
This was awful. Bach would turn in his grave.
This could have been OK-they dedicated 2 hours to the subject-but I think it tries to serve everyone, from novice to experienced musician, and it fails. I’m not sure anybody could manage such a feat. I personally had to stop watching with the really insultingly bad modern presentation of actors portraying Bach and one his violinists engaging in a “fight” outside a church, complete with a mock TV reporter. I mean, WTF was that?? How do you put this huge canard between statements about Bach signing all of his works “To God’s Glory Alone,” along with statements by symphony orchestra members relating their personal feelings when they perform Bach’s music??? Terrible!
Agree. The visuals are boring and meaningless. Some performances are weak, and all are spoiled by silly “ acting “. I love Bach, and wouldn’t recommend this to anyone.
Plainly they were not trying to portray historical facts. I thought it was quite humorous.
Heavens! We're talking about a kid who received a few years of education, lost both parents and was turned out on his own at age 15. Such stories usually end up on the police blotter these days.
Oh, please spare us from the below-average American simplistically opinionated reactions concerning a high-caliber divinity like Bach. By the way, learn how to pronounce "kh." It's not "Box," "Bokc," "Back," or "Bohc."
I have a feeling that all the naysayers of this documentary would have difficulty summarizing their own pathetic lives in more than 15 minutes.
One of the most boring and disappointing films ever! So slow and indulgent; tries way to hard. Writer director fails out of the gate. Couldn't get based 12 minutes.
