  • This week, I wanted to share my thoughts on a set of pencils, the Luminance Percent colours from Caran D'Ache, that I simply cannot live without.
I think these are, quite possibly, my favourite pencils of all time, and I don't know how I managed without them!
Whether you're drawing animals or humans, these pencils are an absolute must-have!

Thank you so much for this. I didn't know why the colours were so muted and thought I might have fake Caran D'ache pencils! Because of this, I've been reaching far more for the Pablo's which are far more vibrant. But yes, muted tones are very useful. It's hard to add subtle detail with super pigmented pencils. I like the skin tones by Lyra Rembrandt and even the Classic colour Faber Castell (and a few others) for the ability to be a bit more heavy handed (and flatten the tooth of the paper a bit!) without adding a ton of pigment. I've actually started to reach far more for my oil based Polychromos lately. I remember being very disappointed in them when I first bought them, but I feel they give a "fresher" look to my drawings than something wax based like Prismas, etc! I'd love to know your view on other pencil brands and what you think they are best used for.
This video has made me view Caran d'ache pencils in general in a different light, so thank you!

It might help to use the term “saturation.” The percent pencils offer a range of saturation of each hue, which saves the time of having to combine the full saturation color with white to get the result you are seeking 😊👍

I hear what you’re saying but I use the language I use in my teaching for beginners tint is an easier work to understand

Also they don’t work as you say about combining with white as the colours are totally different in the % form 🥰

@@BonnySnowdonAcademy I agree, that’s what makes those pencils so great - if combining with white, or trying to use solvent, were not achieving the desired results 👍

I went to look at my 741 pencils and not only did the name change, but the color too... the old version is literally a watered down 745, but the new one is a more pink/orange shade

I just bought the dark flesh's and sephia today. Blick is a great place in the US to get them.

Can you give me some information on where I can find the percent pencils? I’m a Canadian, spending the winter in the US, so I can order from either country.
