My mentor he was always encouraging.oneTime i waS playong in dalton Ill a few miles from towndown chicago he and his lovely wife keioko told me to come down so I came they were just finishing the set and the place was packed I met her at the door and she said come-on and we got to the stage and she told elvin look who I got!! So elvin tells me to come up! Puts his arm around me with me in the middle of wilbur little and him and we all took a bow !!!! Can you IMAGINE ?? I DID'NT PLAY NOTHING!!! BUT HE SHARED THE APPLAUSE WITH ME !!!! YEAH MAN!! THAT'S HOW BEAUTIFUL HE WAS ALL LOVE NO BULLSHIT !!! HE WILL FOREVER BE THE DRUMMER WHO'S CONSTANT GIVING MADE ME THE MUSICIAN I AM TODAY!!!!!
Tone is everything, and Elvin's tone is magnificent, he had it no matter what drum co.he was playing, Gretsch Tama, Slingerland, Ludwig....... his tone is insane, and he spoke in his native tone!!!!!!!!!! so beautiful poised and fluent in his language, reaching all the hearts that were there to open, he opened them all, love you Elvin
tone is the ethereal..rhythm brings it down to earth... one or the other is not Everything...fortunately, Mr Elvin had both.. my favorite jazz drummer, for feel, and mood...
What about his time? Phenomenal musician - way more than just a "drummer". He's a shaman and he drove Coltrane to rediculous heights of ecstasy. And we all love him for that.
Not only is everything said here about Jones so true - he was a marvel, an 8th wonder of the world. But he was also extraordinarily articulate when he spoke. Just dig up an interview with him - his beautiful baritone, his elevated vocabulary, and the insights he gave. On top of that was a deep smile _that you can hear_ - no smirking or negativity, no ego, just a missionary of the music. Pure love. Raise a glass to the spirit of Elvin, next time you hear some drumming.
For the thousandth time, thanks JazzVideoGuy! Elvin is probably the most innovative and influential drummer of the last 50 years. It has been written that he almost single-handedly expanded the nature, role and function of the drummer in jazz ensemble playing from time-keeper to improvisor, equal to that of the front line horns and piano. As Leonard Feather once exhorted up and coming drummers of all musical styles - "Dig Elvin!" By the way, I am a JazzDJGuy on WPFW 89.3 FM in Washington DC.
My westcoast brothers talken bout Krupa & Buddy Rich...cross town it was Chic Web , then 30 miles up the road but allways in my neighborhood was Alvin Jones ! Lot of great sounds have come out the musical hub known as Detroit .
Just love how Elvin starts a groove and carries the theme thru the tune. Goes from simple to complex and back again but the groove is always there. He was so solid as far as understanding composing and arranging. High form of art when you can build a song like he does here. What a great lesson for me.
Que de vie dans le jeux d' Elvin ! Chaque coup possède "le son".Il est tout le contraire d'un"robot" ,il est totalement humain...On sent une respiration permanente dans son expression musicale...Une référence incontournable...
Hi mix3848 Here is some Cd´s you could check out : Puttin it together , The main Force , The Complete Blue note Session Boxset , Time Capsule , new Agenda , earth Jones. some good ones to start with. I got all the Lps and cd´s he made. : ) Elvin the Great master of Jazz Drums. Everything is worth checkin out. Good Luck.
after 20 years of practicing and playing ten hours a day, i'd say im a pretty good drummer. but elvin is on a whole different level buddy rich was a devastating monster but elvin somehow transcended music, somehow his playing was on a spiritual level genius doesnt even begin to describe elvin jones
Funny story: Roy Haynes had to fill on a set at the last minute one night; he didn't have any sticks. So he grabbed a pair of Elvin's signature sticks. He described then as telephone poles in his hands. By the third number he was already tired fun using them. Roy's signature sticks are comparable to like a 7A size, whereas Elvin's are almost like a 2B. Now you where alot of his powerful sound came from. Of course, Elvin also used to work at an auto plant slinging wheels and tires from railway cars all day; I'm sure that was also a contributing factor... 🤔
Really? Because Elvin’s signature stick from Pro-Mark is a 7A. Elvin signature models have been sold a long time and as far as I know they’ve always been a 7A. I wonder if Roy could have grabbed some sticks he thought were Elvin’s? Do you remember where you heard that?
Read it in an interview in Modern Drummer I think. It was Roy's 80-something birthday and he was back out on tour, so they did a cover story on him. Guys like that are full of awesome stories. He told another one about him, Papa Joe & Joe Morello. They were all part of a touring jazz revue show. Papa Joe brought his own lunch which was mostly cold chicken. Joe M looked at it and saw little bugs crawling around on the chicken; said "You're not gonna eat that are you? Look at what's all over it!". Papa Joe starts laughing and says, "There's enough pepper in there to kill anything so they won't bother me." Roy just started laughing his ass off while Joe M looked on in horror.
Please post a vid of your superior to Elvin, groundbreaking, envelope pushing, drumming!! We shall be anxiously awaiting this momentous,History making example of your prowess!!
Them say that Elvin Jones was the father of rhythm and stick, developing polyrthyhms through his drumming, a maniac, only black men can Drum, lets face it, Elvin Jones, Rashied Ali, nobody can touch them. I am trying for 6 months to play an 8 bar solo of Elvin's , so crazy. When i listen to Elvin Jones i feel so lowww. Bless Jones, bless the drummers like him and Blakey, commanding you to act like a crazy man, play your music, dont give a shit about the people watching.
2006 youtube encoding. Sounds very bad by today's standards. This performance certainly deserves a new upload with better audio encoding, less compression. Please.
Elvin Jones' full birth name does not include the names and word, "John Coltrane's drummer". I'm sure everyone knows by now that he played with Trane a year or so subsequent to Trane's 1959 "Giant Steps" album. You should remove John Coltrane's name from the title of your video. It's okay; Elvin's got this.
@2strong2cool according to your profile your 20 years old, so you've been practicing ten hours a day since the day you were born. Also you've found the time to become a professional boxer and professional DJ. Wow, thats really impressive if its true but me thinks someones living in fucking fantasy land!
Who is this "Travis Barker"? Is he a musician? Elvin Jones and Art Blakey, Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich, Joe Morello and I guess for rock fans we can throw in that fine old firm Bonham Baker & Moon. But this "Travis Barker" I have no record of. (Max Roach, Dave Tough, Tony Williams, Billy Cobham...still I find no "Travis Barker." Sorry Mr Barker.)
courtney yeah man! oh, and correction jazz is more precisely a african american emotion. listen to the djimbe, elvin is playing the same SWINGIN'......thanks Elvin
Ha ha! jgeorge, are you a drummer? If you aren't, I'll just dismiss you. But if you are you don't know shit about drumming yet. May be after a few years of actually playing you'll get into the "space" that Elvin Jones played out of. In the mean time, go imitate some marginally talented rock drummer.
travis barker has zero feel and is as stiff as a board. absolutely no grace or eloquence to his playing. what is his name even doing in this comment section?
There was, is and will always be one Elvin Jones. A true legend and master of the instrument.
Anything Elvin did is worth your total attention over and over and over again.
Rhythm, tone AND melody. Elvin was / is a musician in every sense of the word
What about his time? Phenomenal musician - way more than just a "drummer". He's a shaman and he drove Coltrane to rediculous heights of ecstasy. And we all love him for that.
I like Elvin's cymbals. It's too bad Zildjian doesn't sell a pre-packaged. Elvin Jones cymbal setup. :-)
Not only is everything said here about Jones so true - he was a marvel, an 8th wonder of the world. But he was also extraordinarily articulate when he spoke. I had the honor of writing liner notes for one of Elvin's last recordings. He was a very intelligent guy and very warm, as well.
This is such an amazing example of the beauty of avant guard jazz. I wish this was more popular. I could listen to this all day.
For the thousandth time, thanks JazzVideoGuy! Elvin is probably the most innovative and influential drummer of the last 50 years. Elvin was a train that musicians hitched a ride with occasionally.....unstoppable!
He is one the few drummers that you know immediately who it is when listening. And man...you try to copy it and it is impossible.
Bret is a You tube O.G!!!! This video is 13 years old, lol!!! Good stuff right here!!!
Elvin Jones is a Master, Creative, Consummate, and Phenomenal Drummer Extraordinaire!!! Ya Dig.
Just love how Elvin starts a groove and carries the theme thru the tune. Goes from simple to complex and back again but the groove is always there. He was so solid as far as understanding composing and arranging. High form of art when you can build a song like he does here. What a great lesson for me.
Oooh - the drumming! Astounding. How is that even possible?
Elvin you were and will always remain the best. thanks for everything you did behind your drums
love how you could hear where the theme is throughout the drum solo
He's a drummer in his own right. He has played with the best. His work on 'Passion Dance' with McCoy Tyner is sterling!
elvin jones number onep

not just a drummer. He's an innovator and his influences are still felt and copied with the up-and-coming.
Elvin Jones must have been happy to finally have Ravi and Sonny Fortune there with him in The Jazz Machine.
I would say so
Elvin made a beautiful duet recording with Albert Mangelsdorf, maybe hard to find. for live look to late 80s period.
The combination of Liebman and Pine is very rare. If possible, I would like to listen to Pine's solo.
mike clark , lenny white ,jack dejonet , there are some kicking , and still killing it .i think mike held his sticks as he was his protege
wow...dang E-man!
Si quelqu'un avait encore des doutes sur le fait que ELVIN était le ''MEILLEUR'', qu'il écoute attentivement les 2'30 du début du morceau.
Wayne Shorter just recently promoting his Without A Net album said :"I define JAZZ as " I Dare You". hhhehehh
I thought me and my friend were the only ones who referred to jones' playing as tossing salad : D
Palle!
P.S. It seems he is one of the last drummers, , alas I may be the last}, to hold his sticks in the right way.
Coul somebody recommend me some songs or discs of this great drummer, please.
The title of this performance is probably "Shinjitsu", which means "truth."
yes!
Keiko's composition. @@JazzVideoGuy
Here can hear his melodic playing in Tony Williams. He is using the drums to speak in a traditional African way.
2006 youtube encoding. Sounds very bad by today's standards. This performance certainly deserves a new upload with better audio encoding, less compression. Please.
Yet it still sounds like Elvin
Palle mother fuckin' Danielsson!!! \,,/
Too bad the video quality is terrible and the sound has a Doppler shift. Killed his excellent solo. Go Elvin!
@anandanaga999 You got that right man.
F*CKING PHENOMENAL
If you don't respect the CULTURE, you'll never get the MUSIC !!!!!!
fugged about it.......................GOD BLESS THE JONES BOYS!!!
+daa wedge
Right on!
+daa wedge Elvin Fughetta in Italy. ciao .Drum Heads
Supa Calla
he is just Elvin Jones, not John Coltrane drummer
Thank you so much for the post! However, simply making him "John Coltrane's Drummer" is disrepectful, even if you (I know) don't intend it that way.
There is a story about Charlie Watts punching mick Jagger after Mick referred to Charlie as ‘My Drummer’

Not fast enough for today. Not even close to the top. That's ALL that matters in 21st century. Speed and technicality. LOL 😆

delete this video & I ' ll send you some sicars.
What culture? This music is crap and is best suited for a bad porn movie. As for Jones on drums, he's overrated, and that being generous. Pure slop.
Albit Capinigro neophitus!! Fly away from here!!
JUNK! Pure crap noise. Gimme a break. Sounds like a dying wildebeest.
Stay humble, Albit. Listen. Learn.
