    In this video I consider racial differences in average IQ scores. This controversy reached a peak with the publication of "The Bell Curve" by Richard Herrnstein and Charles Murray in 1994. This led to publication of several papers on race and IQ stating that IQ is considered valid, reliable, and heritable, and that while group differences exist, the causes of these differences are not clearly understood. While concepts of race, environmental and societal forces, and genes may or may not all contribute to observed differences between groups, it's important to remember that knowing an individual's group membership doesn't tell one anything about that individual's IQ score.

    I always find it fascinating that certain people deny racial differences in IQ, but affirm racial differences in other areas of the body. Weird how different organs, different body parts, different genes have evolved over time between different groups, but the brain remained the same the entire time, no evolution at all, zero. At least, this is what one would have to believe if there are NO difference in race and IQ.

      Yea, it's the funniest thing if you think about it. Feminist do it so often. They complain no drug or medical equipment gets tested on females. At the same time they say women are completly equal to men. Like girrrrrrrl how about you decide for one.
      BTW if you're reading this and think those things should be tested on females for real - yes and no. In a perfect world it would get tested on/for females. It's often not economical, though. And don't forget that the standard male body is 70kg (forgot the height, but as you can guess rather short). Those 70kg standard male bodies are closer to modern women bodies than to modern male bodies lmao. At least I don't know a single 70kg male since leaving school.

      @User 2389 No one is legitimately trying to make every single person have identical IQ. The "equality" everyone is seeking is for everyone to have access to the things that help people meet their IQ potential: education, health, and peace.
      Consider the Flynn effect. If you take an IQ test from 1900, you will score about 30 points higher. This is because IQs have risen over time. IQ is standardized so that the average IQ is 100 and most people fall within 85 to 115. An IQ of 70 is grounds to declare someone mentally retarded. So you could say by today's standards the average person from 1900 was retarded.
      This is likely because mass education was not commonplace until the mid-1900s. Education matters a lot.
      So when you see people from poor or war-torn countries scoring low IQs, you have to put that in context.

    • @ChronoSoul
      @ChronoSoul 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @User 2389 What evidence is there that the gap has stopped narrowing? I spent some time Googling but came up empty. I did find stats showing continuing environmental disparities that help explain the differences - ex. the poverty rate is 10% for white kids and 30% for black kids - and poverty in childhood affects development.
      If disparities remain after everyone gets fair opportunities, that's fine. We don't need total equality of result and we would expect some random variation even if race had no link to genetic IQ factors.
      But even if there is a natural racial disparity, you'd rarely be in a situation where you have to guess IQ based on race & demographic averages. When you hire someone, you don't just choose a random East Asian because IQs are highest among East Asians. You take 15 minutes to read the candidate's resume and interview them and you gets tons more reliable info on their skills from the way they write and speak.

    • @ChronoSoul
      @ChronoSoul 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @User 2389 Where is the trap? Even if total equality of opportunity is unrealistic and people are biased and tribal, I think what I'm saying matches the scientific evidence - that IQ is partially environmental and partially genetic, that certain families will be predisposed to be smarter, and the genes for high IQ do not fall cleanly along racial lines. There may be some genetic explanation for the racial IQ gap, but it's hard to confirm because we have identified no clear genetic mechanism - unlike the genetic explanations for race differences in and stuff like lactose intolerance etc.
      I will admit that I went through Google Scholar for an hour and couldn't find anything clear on whether the racial IQ gap is closing, staying the same, or widening since the 2006. I did find this one sketchy 2018 meta-analysis by C.F. Comrie that said there were conflicting papers on the topic in 2012 but that's it. If you can find something confirming it held fast during the past 10 years I would appreciate you sharing because it would be really interesting.
      I remember that when I was in university ten years ago, my psych professors were really skeptical about demographic criminal profiling. Yeah, most crime is within-race but that's not enough to finger a specific suspect. I think the more useful modern research was focusses on which people the victim knew with behaviour/personality traits that match the crime, like "She was stabbed 20 times and the body was never hidden, so we know it a was probably a crime of passion by someone less intelligent."

      In this crazy, woke world of alternative realities, science and the often uncomfortable truth have become dispensible, unspeakable and reprehensible entities to the woke, political left. Scientific studies are disected and the uncomfortable aspects are misrepresented and cancelled with the help of woke, PC-focussed media, while the "comfortable" bits are framed, hyped and indoctrinated to the unsuspecting public by the same organizations. This infantile effort to negate reality will ultimately collapse, as reality and its scientific analysis and explanations will always win against political ideology. One thing I heard was that IQ tests in America have been made harder over time so that the average still ends up being 100. So people from a 100 years ago would have scored lower on today's tests than the tests from their era. I'd be curious to see how those tests compare to these results.

Racist is a strong word to call a test, but it cannot be denied that early versions of it had strong biases toward white, western culture. We should always be looking for ways to remove any cultural bias, especially since the goal is to examine our biology. This area of study has a tendency to attract “race realists” who love to use it as justification for their racism.

    In regards to the argument about how caste systems show that intelligence is more affected by social structures, studies have also shown that even within one racial group, there is a genetic variation amongst different castes. A majority of caste systems, a member of one caste married and procreated with someone from the same caste, thus leading to the development of an isolated genetic population. In Japan for example, the genetic difference is observed in the phenotypes (a result of genetic and environmental factors) in which those of upper castes had more frequent instances of traits such as aquiline noses and fairer skin in comparison to the general population.

      How is this a perspective? The brain is a computer. Just as different computers can be more or less efficient running the same program, so can human brains.
      We know that based on evolution, populations exhibit an average of a gene as a whole. The efficiency of the brain wouldn’t be so radical a trait included.

      The only “misuse” of IQ tests is that it shows an unfavorable reality.
      There is science to back up that
      1) in total brain size subsaharan Africans have the least, East Asians have the most
      2) in total neuron density, same thing
      3) in frontal lobe size, same thing
      The science is there. For instance, subsaharan children fail the mirror test longer than white or Asian children.

I think one thing that is often left out of this discussion is the relative unimportance of IQ alone in determining a person's overall success in life. While IQ is definitely important, behavioral differences and character attributes are probably much more important. Otherwise we would see nothing but people with genius level IQ running everything in the country, but that is not that is not the case. Regardless, college admissions should NOT be based on a racial quota system. Can results in IQ show capability in other forms of intellectuality, like a certain group being better in formal education and innovation, while another group being better in sport, music?
    Also, does IQ have a part to play in level of humanity or morality?

    • @PsychExamReview
      @PsychExamReview  4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Higher IQ is associated with higher educational attainment, so higher IQ children are more likely to do better in school and are more likely to earn higher degrees but of course this is just a general pattern and probably isn't too surprising. Similarly, more complex occupations like medicine, law, sciences, and engineering tend to have more high IQ individuals compared to other occupations.
      That said, an IQ score can't tell us much about someone's specific abilities or interests, in large part because IQ tests don't cover many specific skills (like music, advanced science concepts, artistic talent, athletics, etc). This is sometimes used as a critique of IQ scores, but it's not a very strong one because IQ tests intentionally avoid specific skills, especially those that rely more on crystallized intelligence than fluid intelligence.
      High fluid intelligence suggests someone can learn skills more quickly and easily, but the area that a person decides to invest their intelligence into isn't well predicted by just an IQ score itself (such as choosing medicine over law). There may be some correlations between verbal or spatial intelligence performance and certain general fields or occupations, but this is complicated by personality traits, interests, opportunities, economic factors, etc.
      As for morality, I don't have a clear answer but I can suggest a few things to consider. IQ is negatively correlated with criminal behavior, which might suggest those with lower IQs are less moral. Of course, this may also be in part because lower IQ individuals have fewer legitimate job prospects, or in part because they're more likely to get caught if committing a crime.
      Higher IQ individuals might be able to engage in more complex types of moral reasoning, but it's not clear that people actually use moral reasoning to guide their own behavior. Instead, we seem to rely on intuitions or what feels right. Moral reasoning might be seen as how we explain the behavior of others or try to justify our own behavior after the fact, so this may make higher IQ individuals better at justifying any immoral behaviors.
      I'm not an expert on these areas above, so these are just general ways of thinking about it, if you find any interesting research feel free to share it here, thanks for commenting!

      4:50 "... there are many unknowns, and, in particular, that the causes of these differences between groups are not yet known." We do not "kind of know why these differences are occurring". We don't know. Everything these studies say is that there is a difference, and this difference can be the result of many factors (for example, systemic racism that makes education harder for the general black population to have). Yes, there seems to be evidence that IQ is genetically heritable. But not 100%. At most, a part of it will be genetic and another part will be environmental. And, since we don't have a controlled environment to test exactly the differences that the genes cause, we on't actually know how much they impact the overall distribution. And it seems to me that you did not watch the video, or at least not with an unbiased mind. Instead, you watched it trying to help your confirmation bias.

      There is a reason for it. By equating these iq scores with different racial groups and then calling it genetic, they want to construct a picture of blacks as being inherently inferior and this also negates the burden of their exploitation of blacks for centuries. This also justifies the structural and systemic racism of their ancestors and racism in America even now.

      Hey, after dabbling in this knowledge social situations may throw some people off (as they imagine how the person they’re talking to brain is processing all the information - when truly none of us know as we only have the knowledge of our own heads in us ) I don’t wanna come off racist. Just tired of my research going to waste. I see you have an open mind so I thought I’d share. Your comment even helps better prove my research efforts: which are- black people are naturally more intelligent then white ppl- here’s why. Melanin vs no melanin. You could tell how everyone would feel even when they read this. When it comes to emotions (the strongest power in the universe) black people naturally have the HIGHEST UNDERSTANDING - you’re brain works 10x faster then others due to your melanin as your whole body is your temple. Not just your brain. You often understand a situation to it’s full caliber , the knowledge you naturally obtain from situations and your hyper senses actually give you a major advantage. (tho balance is key to the universe ) . Tho , the portrayal of your thoughts might come off slightly less coherent when put to a IQ test but - when a situation comes to life or something happens in the heat of the moment you will often know exactly how it will play out so you may find yourself not putting in a effort in your social ques because you already know. So you’re just making conversation - you’re the top dawg don’t trip.

      Standardization Samples"- Wicherts and Flynn, Psychological Science, October 2006

    • @hammockcamping2500
      @hammockcamping2500 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @NanakiRowan When Dickens and Flynn (2006), wrote, "Blacks have gained ‘‘4 to 7 IQ points on non-Hispanic Whites between 1972 and 2002, they sidestepped our (Rushton and Jensen's) citation of Shuey’s (1966) review of the literature, which shows that Black-White IQ differences in the United States have remained at 15 to 18 points, or 1.1 standard deviations, for nearly a century. For example, she found 23,596 Black draftees in World War I (1917) had an IQ of 83 (vs. 100 for Whites). For RECENT data, we cited the meta-analysi by Roth, Bevier, Bobko, Switzer, and Tyler (2001), which also shows a mean difference of 1.1 standard deviations (range of 0.38 to 1.46 standard deviations, DEPENDING ON THE TEST’S G-LOADING, based on 6,246,729 individuals from military, corporate, and higher-education samples. Roth et al. found any narrowing of the gap was ‘‘either small, potentially a function of sampling error . . . or NONEXISTENT for highly g loaded instruments.
      To claim a 4- to 7-point gain for Blacks, Dickens and Flynn chose three independent tests showing medium gains (the Wechsler, Stanford-Binet, and Armed Forces Qualification tests) and relegated to their Appendix B four or more tests showing lesser gains. They excluded the Wonderlic Personnel Test, which they acknowledge showed a gain of only 2.4 points for Blacks between 1970 and 2001. They excluded the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children (K-ABC), which Murray (2005) described as showing a loss of 1 IQ point for Blacks between 1983 and 2004. They excluded the very g-loaded Woodcock-Johnson test, which Murray (2005; whom they cite) described as showing the conventional gap of 1.05 standard deviations for the third (2001). They also excluded the Differential Ability Scale, which in Lynn’s (1996) analysis (which they cite) showed a maximum gain of 1.83 IQ points for Blacks between 1972 and 1986. To be compelling, however, researchers must take the totality of available evidence into account (Gottfredson, 2005).
      Even the tests Dickens and Flynn did analyze do not support their conclusion. The alleged gain of 4 to 7 points is from a ‘‘projected’’ trend line based on a small IQ rise per year multiplied by more years than are in the data....
      Dickens and Flynn’s claim of having chosen tests with ‘‘meticulous sampling’’ (p. 914) is inaccurate. It is widely known among test developers that although samples are carefully drawn to create a nationally representative sample for the entire population, they are not chosen to get an accurate estimate for subgroups such as Blacks. The most disadvantaged elements in poorer schools in inner cities are rarely, if ever, included.
      Dickens and Flynn also sidestep theoretical issues. For example, Rushton (1999) showed in a factor analysis that the secular increases in IQ behave differently from the Black-White differences. Although secular increases on various tests cluster together, they do so independently of Black-White differences, which cluster with the g factor and genetic indices such as inbreeding depression and twin differences. The finding that the secular increases are not on the g factor and are qualitatively different from Black-White differences has been well replicated (e.g., Wicherts et al., 2004). Dickens and Flynn appear to confirm this observation, but do not provide context.
      Dickens and Flynn covaried age to take the implicit position that no age differences are expected. Yet their increase was smallest for the oldest group, so it is unclear that gains made at younger ages will endure. Jensen (1998) demonstrated that Black-White IQ differences typically increase with age (because genetic influences become stronger over the life span). He used Shuey’s (1966) compendium to document that the average Black-White difference was 0.70 standard deviations in early childhood, 1.00 standard deviations in middle childhood, and 1.20 standard deviations in early adulthood.
      A more satisfactory method to test whether Black IQ is rising is to use a sibling control group, as Jensen (1977) did in rural Georgia to examine the cumulative-deficit hypothesis (also see Jensen, 1980). Examining differences between siblings on the same test when they reach the same age and the same grade in the same school holds constant factors such as family back-ground and demographic changes in particular areas. Until the results of several such studies allow reassessment of the situation, the best estimate of Black-White convergence over the past 100 years is between 0 and 3.44 IQ points-a maximum effect size of 0.23-well within the predictions of our estimated heritability of .80 for the Black-White g difference in the United States".

    So, if there is a 15 point difference between your IQ and that of your brother or sister, it's probably genetics, because you were raised in the same family with the same parents. That same IQ difference between 2 different ethnic , national or racial groups may have a bigger environmental, or cultural component. The rational view at this point, is to say we don't know how much genetic, environmental or cultural factors contribute to these racial differences.

      Why would the rational view be to say we don't know? Just because there are bigger environmental differences than between siblings? I think you're correct that both fallacies apply here; the continuum fallacy in that races may still be distinct even if the exact categorizations between them are vague, and Lewontin's because more genetic variation within races than between them doesn't necessarily negate a taxonomic concept of race. This is a controversial topic and as a result I think both sides tend to marshal any evidence and arguments they can find to "win", resulting in perpetuation of certain arguments, and, as you note, an unwillingness to acknowledge possible flaws in either the evidence or the arguments on one's "side".

I took an IQ test for Kenya and scored very low, though I am above average on Western tests. The questions were very challenging items of logic and reasoning; they were not items one would ever likely see on a Western test but were very relevant to functioning and education in that society. Takeaway: Calling a test an "intelligence test" is a value judgment by the society who made up the test.

    But we can know the race of an individual by looking at his genetic admixture. Many early anthropologists classified Ethiopians with the Caucasian race by looking at the shape of their skulls. And indeed, a century later genetics proved that Ethiopians share a common ancestry with Caucasians (Europeans, peoples of the Caucasus, Arabs, Persians, etc.). So Ethiopians are not true Africans.

      I don't think the argument that race is socially constructed should be taken to its extreme and I agree there are certainly genetic markers of different races that can be traced and analyzed, but I think the broader point that simple classification boxes like White, Black, Asian, Latino, etc. may be influenced by societal views (not genetic analysis) is worth some consideration. Thanks for commenting!

      @The Truth about Africa hurts they don't determine someone's race because there Art Uniform features across races. Certain characteristics come up across different groups of people across the world. What they determine is someone's personal ancestry and where they may be from and then we prescribe that as a race but forensicss itself just like genetics doesn't have a box labeled black white or Asian.

      @The Truth about Africa hurts .....🤣🤣🤣🤣. Ok Mister Humiliation. I wouldn't go around boasting about that that when you say such blatantly biased and uneducated remarks. Not to mention your clear disposition towards your own beliefs that you continue to perpetuate by confirmation bias.
      Okay... Literally none of that means anything to me. Mainly because I work in genetics specializing in African American studies, African studies and anthropology. Also just as you probably won't believe me, nothing of what you say makes me believe you. You claiming that it means nothing because you could be completely be making that up. And I would lean more towards that because of end-all-be-all you use your degrees as because you don't actually form an argument. Especially the "SJW support group" comment you felt compelled to throw in when you know nothing about me , and so blatantly shows your actual intentions that it makes me not only disregard whatever you have to say but I doubt it in general as if you're just another person creating a false passage to troll . Because someone who is actually educated in these fields that they claimed would be able to make a full response and breaking down the arguments instead of trying to position themselves as a person of authority and somehow declare that that means that they're correct without even knowing what the other person does. You don't actually provide any sources to support your beliefs, your source is essentially "trust me". You completely played yourself. Its damn near pathetic, if it isn't already.
      And the mere fact you had all of your credentials is highly suspect. That's your first response instead of actually reading the information provided which is actually sourced and presenting argumentation on why you disagree. But that's the thing you don't have an argument because I venture to say that you're lying. Like your response is so comical it's difficult for me to break down just how hilarious it is. You say I have milia it myself but you familiar with it yourself by acting as if some letters behind your name actually mean anything when I know nothing about what you've actually done in the field, what you contributed, or if you agree with the scientific consensus of the field in general which you've shown that you don't.
      Moroever, anyone that works in the field would not only know that the information I provided was about nuanced debate and nuances in the field of forensics. But for someone that knows so much then you would understand that the Anthropological Association in 1995 said race is not genetic so there goes the foundation for any argument you have. And continual genetic research and consensus continues to confirm this. An "sjw source"... It's literally ABC News and Slate. All your response shows thinking that you're going to have me late me, is that you're so blinded by your political bias and implicit racism that you don't even understand how uninformed you come across in a field of study you say you know so well. Please educate yourself because about the things you claim to know about because you look ignorant. In fact you didn't even argue anything you just wanted to act because you have these degrees, allegedly, you somehow no more even though you have no idea what I do. Just because you study something doesn't mean you know what you're actually talking about and you've made that apparent. Because what I stated was the most basic information that any forensic scientist, Anthropologist or geneticist would be able to tell you. The only reason you don't want to accept it is because of your willful ignorance.

    • @nikibronson133
      @nikibronson133 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @The Truth about Africa hurts
      Moreover if your degrees are true, they have nothing to do with anthropology or anthropologic genetics. So all of these degrees you try to use to prop yourself up as a position of authority on the issue, without actually arguing the substance of of the issue itself but just trying to rely upon your alleged degrees which means nothing in the actual field in work, as any scientist would tell you that unless you contribute something you're a failure in your field, but have nothing to do with the topic at hand. They're slightly unrelated. Physiology is not genetic research. Forensics science is under criminal study not under genetic research. The closest you can get is about human genetics but you don't clarify to what discipline or field you work in. You can work in human genetics as it relates to food or medicine. Moreover when did you learn Because unless you're constantly updating yourself on new information what you learned 20-30 even 10 years ago could be completely incorrect and new information would have come to change what you previously learned. As they used to teach Mongoloid negroid and caucasoid in school's back in the 70's and 80's, they stopped in the late 80s early 90s because they realized that was wrong as more genetic research was published. So you have epitomized the example of someone who thinks just having been to school makes them an expert. The ideal image of an ignorant smart person. Someone who thinks they're smart but is actually stupid. Someone who thinks what they say is smart because they have a dumb image of what smart people are actually like. Not to mention the fact that you're clearly biased leaning towards racism because your name says it all. "The truth about Africa hurts" is so blatantly racist to where if you actually studied human genetics you would know that Africa is the most genetically diverse place in the world that everyone stems from . It's the Cradle of Mankind and has a oldest civilizations. But you're on a video about race and IQ, which already shows a negative predisposition towards racism, so that alone completely invalidates anything you have to say because it comes from a racist bias. Just because you studied all this stuff doesn't mean that what you have to say is correct or even matters. That's actually how scientists lose accolades and become discredited. It happened time and time again. In fact Nobel Peace prizes have called to be stripped for some and numerous scientists accolades taken away. Thats what hat makes me think that you've made everything up its your persona to act as if you know what you're talking about when in reality you don't and if you really did study this stuff than you would be so far away from how you think but that's why I'm pretty certain you're lying, but on the off-chance that I'm not right and you aren't lying will that's really sad and I pity you. Please actually read and educate yourself.

    Real life is the biggest indicator for truth. I live outside of a major city, and you can see the disparity whenever you go downtown. I took the metro to a baseball game, all you see at the station are my people (blacks) either panhandling, playing music/dancing, or standing around smoking. On the commute it's all uppity whites internally fearful but having to subconsciously pretend it's due to the poverty or slavery. On the train we'll be the loudest and most disruptive, but whites have to keep quiet because they fear being called racist. We arrive at the stadium (in the most gentrified area) and its all blacks bargaining waters, hats, tickets, and whites give them money either out of guilt or shame. In the stadium its whites in the press boxes and office rooms while blacks do the most simple jobs like punch your ticket or pass out beers. Its just fascinating to me how unnatural the interactions are. More so how much we go thru life lying to ourselves about reality and why things are the way they are. I feel 2nd hand embarrassment when I'm in the city because they look at me and instantly play the white guilt complex or either expect me to act like the rest. Its like we've been fed lies about reality to shield our emotions, and if you don't believe the lie then you're evil, heartless, etc. I think the phrase is moralistic fallacy, but public opinion is definitely the most powerful thing in a democratic, heterogeneous society.
