How can a group of broken pieces unrelated by blood come together to form a bond as strong as family?
I outline some details of Koreeda's previous works dealing with the notion of family and how they provide the foundation for the eventual creation of the masterpiece that is Shoplifters. Through explaining the various themes and motifs found in the different films in his career, I try to show how this movie is a true test to the classic concept of family.
