I've seen the movies but haven't read the book. What a absolutely enchanting way of getting to enjoy it! I actually didn't know there was a book. I was very young when I watched the first movie and it gave me nightmares for months. This is a real treat Tony! Especially since it's you doing the narration, you really bring all the characters to life! It's like seeing a movie, but inside your mind. I bet you were the best dad at reading bedtime stories. Thank you Tony for all you do. You bring so much comfort to many I'm sure. Keep well my friend, you are precious 😻

I have read this story, but it disturbed me due to the suffocating atmosphere. There is another person who reads this extremely well on YT, but it’s very strange how different the story is, depending on how it’s read. This is why A.I. will never ever compare to the human who infused the tale with emotion, their own perception through the lens of their own experiences and skills. This story is a fine example of how much the human brings to a narrative, changes and embodies it. It’s haunted not only by Shirley Jackson, herself but, by the reader. The book becomes a house to be haunted.

I always want more, even though I've read this dozens of times over the years. My mother had a copy and I believe this book was the 1st horror novel (novella?) we shared and discussed. I was no more than maybe 8 the 1st time I read it, and too young to catch the nuances. But as I grew older and with my mother's taste in books, I decided Shirley Jackson was the most brilliant writer of her time. I still feel that way, and hold her in high esteem against many talented artists. The fact that she was female, and most horror at the time was produced by men, made me admire her even more. And tbh even her most seemingly mundane works always left me disconcerted. And made me want to write.
Thank you SO much for bringing this treasure to life. With my mom in a nursing home in another state, uncommunicative, this reading takes me home to happier times. Sharing and scaring one another...and loving it 💜

Deco has more subtle hints concealed under simple lines, and Nouveau simply flaunts it's lushness in complex lines.
Quite a paradox in terms and writing.

..Russ Tamblyn. Richard Matheson wrote a novel " Hell House". Sort of a knockoff. Interesting movie with Rowdy McDowell..Pamela Franklin.

@@thegreencat9947 Yes, Kate Beckinsale appeared in the 1999 film "The Haunting." The movie is a horror film directed by Jan de Bont and is a loose adaptation of the 1959 novel "The Haunting of Hill House" by Shirley Jackson. In the film, Beckinsale played the character of Eleanor "Nell" Vance, one of the four people invited to participate in a study of sleep disorders at a creepy mansion that soon proves to be haunted.

Sometimes I think I have a hard time understanding character motivations. Like why Theodora and Elenore should get so angry at each other in this chapter. I think I just want them to bond so badly. It seems their playful, friendly talk has always had some undercurrent of bitterness and cruelty, though. Someone tell me if this is true?

      Welcome to Shirley Jackson.
When you finish listening to this wonderful narration, if you are able, watch 'Shirley', it's a biographical movie about the author.
While I gather that there are inaccuracies, I think that Elizabeth Moss brings Shirley's complex character to life.

I’m Irish American but it sounds fine to me! Maybe you are just a very critical person! Why listen and complain because we are all on here because WE love it! How would we know that it was the doctor and he has come as the outsider and the other accent’s Tony’s always done are fantastic because that is how you learn…… you learn by doing! No English people generally can’t do an Irish accent properly either except professional actors and tony got it correct on Unreal City and several other early Irish ☘️ accent’s even though he has to flip in And out of all the other characters accent’s at the same time….. even the professional’s wouldn’t be able to do that! When you only have to focus on one accent then it’s completely different and it was a different period in time remember!!!!!

Its a caricature accent in the same way I’ve attempted Luke and Theodora and Eleanor. None of them are my own accent of course and neither is the narrators voice . I’m sorry if it didn’t work for you . I just need to do something to create the ‘sound stage’ that’s the plan. Dr montague is based on Agent smith from the Matrix. I never thought he sounded quite authentic (he’s a New Zealander). I hadn’t intended Dr montague to sound authentic either in fact. Though you could say that’s just an excuse :)

    • @TheMrCougarful

I think the handling of Montague is perfect. Snobby know-it-all academic, sounds always like he's talking to students.
