George Stinney was likely innocent. I tried to look up to see, but can't quickly find who they think was more likely. I think it was maybe 1 of their family members of the girls killed, in the area during that time. They just found a kid that they thought likely, assuming him guilty, or making him a scapegoat.

i was pro death penalty until i did research for a pro/con paper on a subject of our choice in college. I decided that i wouldn't gain anything intellectually by writing about a stance i already had,so i decided to challenge myself by researching from the 'con' side. The final straw for me,however, was my mom saying she was pro death penalty, but couldn't be the one to push the plunger or flip the switch...i thought about it,and,at least for myself, i couldn't do it,either,so therefore, i could no longer endorse it.

To me, I see it as something that makes mistakes. Innocent people have, can and will be executed. To me even one Innocent person who was Innocent, is reason enough to abolish the death penalty.
Look at the case of Derek Bentley in the UK, or Colin Campbell Ross here in Melbourne, Australia. Both were innocent and both were executed. If you don't know these cases, please look them up. There are plenty of TH-cam videos on them.
No legal system is perfect, that is regardless of where it is.
There is no evidence that it is a deterrent None. If you compare national or subnational bodies that have the death penalty with similar bodies that don't, the evidence shows that there is no decrease in crime with the one that has it.
What decreases crime is such things as employment, access to universal health care, housing, social security ecta.
Then there are countries with corruption such as Indonesia, Thailand, Bangladesh, Somalia, Iraq, Egypt, China, North Korea, Pakistan, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Yemen ecta. The political involvement, graft, ecta, shows these legal systems can not be trusted to be fair and impartial.
      No leg

In my country at 17th to 19 century was a method for death penalty. They make many holes in the body of victim, and push a candle in each holes. Then they lit the candles. The victim was killed by bleeding until candles go out. Historical books have described this type of death as very painful

There should be a shorter limit. They are able to live & grow old while they took someones right to do so(not fair or just) And we pay for them to be fed, clothed, educated, & medical🤦‍♀️

Is this a stain on Maine that no one wants to talk about? The fact that it happened in Maine, does not mean it was a Maine execution because at that time we still like an annex to Mass (probably a better word for that) but we didn’t gain statehood until the 1800’s so I’m curious, what is this guys story? Why is he not on Wiki? Haha

"most likely" And that's why it must be abolished. You can't be 100% sure. If you still support the death penalty, that means you supported a system where people can spend 15 years in solitary confinement before being killed for a crime they didn't commit. Do you think you should be 10x as scared as those innocents?

    • @ThorHC11

The fact that it's even possible to execute an innocent person, in my opinion, is reason enough to abolish the death penalty.
I would gladly let any number of guilty people stay in for life rather than be executed if it means just one innocent person has their life saved.
