My dear uncle Benard Ighner passed away today, August 14th, 2017, our hearts are heavy. Benard is in a better place, with our Lord God, the most high...Nephew Michael A Phillips
I wish to extend my condolences to you, I Loved this song your uncle wrote for YEARS - I never heard Q's version much, growing up, but as a crazy hippie kid, had the Judy Collins version & played it til it warped. Your uncle was a genius, musician. I pray he's playing lovely music in the celestial sky now. Thank you for sharing this.
A year or two before he passed, Benard Ighner blessed my family with the most amazing phone call, I was an ordained Unity minister with a church in Detroit and I based my Sunday talk this one week on "Everything Must Change" and as was our practice I sent a check for $250 to Benard, through his agent as I recall for I did not know the man at the time but wanted to say thank you from our church to him for the inspiration of his song. So months go by, and I'm home with my family one day when the phone rings and I answered it and there is this deep lovely bass baritone voice introducing himself "My name is Benard Ighner and I just received a check from you Reverend Considine.... I am not a churchgoer but I always thought that churches wanted the money to go the other way around,-- churches don't give money to people, people give money to people!!" HaHa.... cracked me up. And then I explained our practice. We spoke for over an hour that day. He wanted to speak with my then wife and then Benard even spoke with my little two year old daughter!! What a sweet sweet man. And then he told me that he works and writes for half the year and then goes into his house and doesn't come out for months as he writes music. He suggested we'd never talk again, and that turned out to be the case. I was saddened to hear of his passing and so grateful for the chance to have met him and had those wonderful conversations. I send my love and prayers for comfort to his family and friends. I know he is loved in the Great Beyond.
MY CONDOLENCES AND SYMPATHIES ARE THE FAMILY, THE FRIENDS, AND THE FANS - THIS SONG IS ICONIC, TIMLESS, ELEGANCE, AND GLAMOROUS - A CLASS ACT BERNARD !!!!! - ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️🎭🎭🎭🎭🎭🎭🎭🎭🎭🎭🎭🎭🎭🎭🎭🎭🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Benard Ighner is the most incredible singer I have ever heard. There are so many rare qualities he has as a vocalist (timbre of his voice, rich tonal quality, diction, pitch, phrasing, emotional impact, colors, etc.). This song changed my life and I am proud to say I had the pleasure of meeting him and hanging with him. I consider him to be a supremely gifted artist and talent. Truly one of the best ever.
I'm so sad to learn from Benard Ighner's nephew, Michael A. Phillips, that Benard died in August. I only learned about this amazing composer and performer in May when my sister died. She asked that "Everything Must Change" be performed at her life celebration of life - it was this song that helped her through her many challenging life changes. Thank God for the time Benard had on Earth - his wisdom is being passed on from listener to listener. Starla Anderson, Victoria BC Canada
Such a beautiful song. Although this is the original, I have listened to 4 renditions back to back. Very reminiscent of Stevie Wonder's All in Love Is Fair just one year before.
Hi ! Same! Someone posted the George Benson version so I looked for other versions and listened. So many covered it, I see why! This arrangement is beautiful!
I've always loved this song. His voice is so soothing. This is my first time listening to Bernard Ighner. I guess I had been under a rock. At 71 years of age, I had never heard of him. I happened to be watching a series on paramount plus (Recipes for Love & Murder) when this song , everything must change was playing in one of the episodes. I had listened to other artists renditions, but never Bernard Ighner. I was moved to tears😢😢😢 R.I.P.
I have heard and love many beautiful versions of this lovely song, but no one does it better than Bernard Ighner. Thank you Bernard for a love song to life.
Oh my I am in tears finding this beautiful rendition of Everything Must Change by the original composer and singer. I am in awe of your talent. Thank you Bernard Igner for sharing your gift. Your legacy lives on.
I had this album thirty-five years ago and lost it in the '82 earthquake in Hollywood. Now it's come back to me as if a miracle. "...and music makes me cry." Check the other beauty on the side called "And Life Goes On." Thanks Bernard. Where are you man?
+appalachianporky You seem to be the only one that cares. Does that take away or add to the beauty of the song??? Take your narrow-minded, bigotted point of view somewhere else.
I too once owned this magnificent LP and lost in storage. He is the only perfect performer of this song. He owns it in all ways. No other like him. Wish I could find again.
Hated smokers. Wouldn't allow them around him. Passed from lung cancer. Whew! Missing you, Benard. Spoke with your sister Sandy a few days ago. All's well with her.😢❤❤❤❤
This is such a beautiful song. One of the best of all times. First time I played it was at a funeral for 2 years ago. Strange that I haven't met this song earlier since I've been playing professionally for 25 years...
I heard this song for the first time while watching the episode of 227 that he guest starred on. This song was so beautiful that I had to look it up on TH-cam. So beautiful! Melody and all.
Simply the best. He is as lovely in person as are these lyrics. It was a remarkable experience working with him for one night many, many years ago when opened for Nancy Wilson.
Rest in peace, Bernard. Thank you for all of your great gifts. This towering gem is the deepest of teachings. I was privileged to hear you play it for us during High Holiday services at Brandeis Bardin institute, thanks to your friend, Rabbi Stan Levy. It altered my prayer life profoundly. Later, when my wife died in 1997, Barbra Streisand' s version was released just a few days after the funeral. Hearing it playing in "heavy rotation" on my CD player was a great comfort and daily companion through the ocean of grief.
I heard the Blue Devils play this 3 Days in a row, plus the encore & it made me cry every, single time! I had to find out what is was. This is so beautiful! Drum Corps really can open up your world.
I love the essence of how each phrase leads into a conscious reality . . .We must continue to accept change transforms us into the greatest our highest loving self . . .Thanks always and bless the generations of King Benard Ighner . .My deepest regards nephew Michael A. He said I should rent a cadillac (if I didn't already have one)convertible and be driven down the Champs Elysee with a car full of pigs of different sizes. I thought that was interesting and wasn't sure if he was kidding or not. He insisted it would work. It sounded too difficult for me to find all those animals. I'm not that kind of person who would exploit so many avenues. Especially the Champs Elysee. He had a unique sense of humor. Mysterious fellow. I hope he's still in Paris. Besous, Julie

Just saw the 227 episode. What s classy, elegant man he was. They don’t make ‘em like that anymore! May he Rest In Peace.
Just watched the 227 episode as well. I remember a TV commercial (for a car) in the 1980s using this arrangement.
That's when I heard this song and the only other person that can sing this song is Walter Jackson he sounds just like him 🤩🤩🤩🤩
That's where I know him from too!
I remember listening to him growing up. His voice was so rich, expressive...dynamic. What season and episode of 227 did Benard Ighner guest appear?
This man not only wrote and sings this magnificent homage to life...but he owns it and that goes straight to the heart
What else could we expect from the composer of this magnificent song, but a rendition that speaks to the heart!

Rest in peace Bernard Ighner, thank you for this epic gift of a song for all time
Love this song. It was my goodbye song for my retirement. But George Benson's style Inflight album❤❤❤❤
I first heard this song 30+ years ago. Mr. Ighner wrote the song that poignantly states the facts of life.
I have heard and love many beautiful versions of this lovely song, but no one does it better than Bernard Ighner. Thank you Bernard for a love song to life.
Cleo Silvers absolutely I agree💯💯💯
It’s Benard not Bernard. And this is stunning
So beautifully said. And you are so right.
Indeed
For me Oleta Adams version is the greatest ... that's only my opinion

My Mom introduced me to the show and the show introduced me to THIS beautiful singer.😊
I LOVE YOU BENARD!!!
I am so sorry I did not recognize him until today ,my heart is full .
I met Bernard at the Hollywood Savoy in Paris a popular nightclub where I was singing for the year. He was in the audience. We became friends as he came in often at that time, Late 80's/.
While chatting one night about fame, he told me if I wanted to create a stir in Paris, I should do a wild publicity stunt and that would get me 'famous' !
Had been living in the Southwest, Utah, I think, when he died.
Everything must change,
Nothing stays the same.
Everyone must change
Nothing stays the same.
The young become the old,
Mysteries do unfold.
'Cause that's the way of time
Nothing and no one goes unchanged.
There are not many things
In life you can be sure of.
Except
Rain comes from the clouds,
And sun lights up the sky,
And humming birds do fly.
Winter turns to spring.
Wounded heart will heal.
Never much too soon
Everything must change
The young become the old,
Mysteries do unfold.
'Cause that's the way of time
Nothing and no one goes unchanged.
There are not many things
In life you can be sure of.
Except
Rain comes from the clouds,
And sun lights up the sky,
And humming birds do fly.
...and music makes me cry
It's been awhile since I've to Bernard. Wonderful. Tell him Hi from Nancy Sain
Love the original song!!!
Just rediscovered this 🎵 🎶 🎵 love it

For some of us jazz fans 'of an age' it was our favorite vocal of the 70s - 'Everything Must Change'. “Siriusly Sinatra - on Sirius XM” says our favorite satellite radio announcer, before playing Katherine McPhee's latest version of a song composed (words & music) by “Benard Ighner” - from an otherwise all-instrumental album “Body Heat” (1974) produced/arranged by Quincy Jones. At the time, the minimalist liner notes told us nothing about the singer.
I needed to Google the song title to be reminded of Quincy's singer, who left us four summers ago:
Benard Ighner (January 18, 1945 - August 14, 2017) was an American jazz singer, musician, songwriter and record producer.
Ighner was born in Houston, Texas. After graduating in 1962 he moved with his parents to San Diego, California, and soon afterwards joined the U.S. Army. He learned multiple instruments including piano, guitar and saxophone, and after his discharge in 1965 recorded with Dizzy Gillespie.
As Bernard Ito, he recorded a vocal version of the Gillespie composition "Con Alma" on Mercury Records, and for a while took over as Gillespie's featured singer on tour. Later, using the pseudonym Alexander St. Charles, he began working and recording with composer and arranger Lalo Schifrin on the 1971 album Rock Requiem, and co-wrote with Schifrin the song "Like Me" which he sang on the soundtrack of the film Dirty Harry.[1] He also sang on David Axelrod's 1972 album, The Auction.[2]
Ighner became a session singer in Hollywood. In 1974, he sang his own composition "Everything Must Change", a track on Quincy Jones' best-selling album Body Heat. Though not issued as a single, it is claimed that "the haunting masterwork went a long way toward selling the full-length album.."[3]
The song was later recorded as the title track of a 1976 album by Randy Crawford, as well as by Barbra Streisand, Peggy Lee, George Benson, Nina Simone, Nancy Wilson, Judy Collins, June Christy, Jean Carn, and others.[3]
