Yet another video that I am extremely proud of! Inspired by @TR3XProductions1stChannel and @CP1973_Productions
Note: The CBS Television Network logo from 1952-68 is not included in this video, because that was used as a closing logo for CBS Productions, not a national ident. I might do a logo history on CBS Productions in the future.
CBS is an American commercial broadcast television and radio network. It is the flagship property of the CBS Entertainment Group division of Paramount Global. They were first introduced to radio in 1927 as the United Independent Broadcasters, and they changed their names over the years. From the 1930s, they were experimenting with television, where they opened an experimental station in New York City called W2XAB. This was relaunched as WCBS-TV on 1st July 1941, and more CBS television stations followed afterward. The earliest known idents from CBS date from 1947.
My next logo history will be on BBC One.
This video was released for educational purposes only.
What are your favorite idents from CBS?
Mine would be the 1st, 2nd, 5:21, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th, 20th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 24th, 25th, 26th (especially the John Madden variant), 27th, 28th, 31st, 32nd, 33rd, 34th, 35th, 36th, 38th, 40th, 42nd, 45th, 25:36, 47th, 48th, and 49th idents.

@@JontyMaster I do not know. A lot of their idents are really great!
@@JontyMaster and I’m also very excited for BBC One Logo History, I’m pretty curious on what you will do with it
@@CP1973_Productions Glad to hear you're looking forward to my next video. I'm sure going to have a blast making it.
The moment we all waited for! CBS!
It's really interesting how the modern jingle evolved over time. It was only very recently perfected. I never even noticed it until watching this video
I agree.
I think they got their current three-note jingle near the turn of the millennium.
So did ABC's 4-note jingle. NBC did it first, so ABC and CBS execs took a whole nigh-century to get theirs
Fox needs to join the party with the last 4 notes of the 20th Century Fox fanfare
@@EB3Rplus They got it in 1992

It honestly kind of fascinates me how the major terrestrial US networks have had so little change to their logos. Other than NBC it's just been small tweaks over time, and even NBC's logo has barely changed in 40 years
Yeah. NBC is still proud as a peacock. Speaking of NBC, I've been thinking of doing a logo history on that after I complete the BBC channels.
CBS used to be one of the biggest television networks, but this logo history is amazing!
Hi!!
Used to?
It still is! They’ve been the top network for most of the 21st century. Both night and day. Hell they’re the only network with daytime games shows and multiple soap operas.
I love how they still have the famous "eye" to this day.
Plus the jingle for the final logo gives me nostalgic memories of hearing that famous Intel jingle!!!
Did you know that CBS aired a special based on Backyard Sports (A Humongous Entertainment game) in 2002? I hope CBS makes a Backyard Sports animated show based on the 1997 look and all the actors reprising their roles.
6:22 5th logo was creepy. I'm just talking about the animation! Circles draws one-by-one, then the outlined CBS eyemark with the word "CBS" in the eye's pupil that has a IN-YOUR-FACE animation with the word fading out to a TV show or a film (similar to the start of commercials). It caught me off-guard when I wasn't expecting it, @JontyMaster
Yeah I can understand why it would make some first-time watchers jump out of their seats/bed
Let's give out the scare factor for the 5th logo and the variants:
• Original Version: Medium to nightmare. The sudden in-your-face animation of the outlined eyemark can get to some. The opening theme of the show/film and the lack of color doesn't help and scare some. It can be raised higher if it reminds you of Viacom's "V Of Doom" logo! It can also annoy some people who are expecting the next logo
• Color Versions: Medium to high. The in-your-face animation and the opening theme of the show/film is still there. But the color lowers the scare factor.
• Closing Variant: Low to medium. The eyemark zooming out can scare some but it's tamer than the original version. However, the announcer speaking over the closing theme can surprise some.
• Good Morning World Variant #1: Minimal to medium. The fast-pace of the zoom in will get to some but the stopping of the zoom-in and the pink text "Good Morning World" on the eye's pupil makes it easier to look. The music lowers the scare factor too but somewhat unnerve some. However, the announcer can catch you off-guard.
• Good Morning World Variant #2: Low to medium. The music is still there. And the colors changing behind the CBS logo can cause epilepsy.
I'm not going to describe many variants for the 5th logo today.
Do you like it, @JontyMaster?
Awesome evolution of idents from CBS, Jonty! CBS does have a lot of memorable idents, like the other American networks (NBC and ABC)! Also, _wow!_ The Eyemark logo is one of the most iconic television logos along with NBC's Peacock logo, and it has been used for a long time since the 1950s! That's incredible!
Thanks, Man, and yes the eye has been used for a long time. Seventy one years!
The longest of the 3 current logos
1.NBC
2.CBS
3.ABC
4.PBS
The CBS's eyemark inspired many TV's in the world, like ATV Midlands, Band, Doordashan, the France 3 logo between 1973-1992, channel 4 of El Salvador, channel 10 from Uruguay, the 1992-2002 Frecuencia Latina logo, Televisa and many others
Wow, this was a pretty great logo history. CBS had an interesting selection of idents along with NBC and ABC. I’m kinda wondering if your going to do those 2. That was be kinda cool
Thanks, Connor! I agree with your comments, and I'm thinking of doing a logo history on NBC after BBC One, Two, Three and Four.
That would be pretty cool
ABC,BBC,BBC Woow it's much cool
My favorite part is for indent from Saturday morning programming block from the 80's and all the way to the 2013!
7:46 Funny thing is that this specific bit of footage is in B&W!
Another awesome video jonty can't wait for the BBC one logo history
Thank you once again!
Yep,maybe it's because on October 18, the company itself (not a Tv channel) marks 100 anniversary.

@@JontyMaster that would be awesome!
I gotta say 1992 - 1995 is the big one for me. But some of the modern idents are nice too.
Oh yeah, the "welcome home" ones are amazing too, and "the address is CBS" ones are just as astounding.
8:31 Here comes the classic everyone knows in love ❤️
17:36 maybe is the funniest one ever.

It is quite humorous. David Letterman shrugging just tops it all off.

There was a time in the mid 1960’s where the black all seeing eye CBS logo winked. It felt rather sinister! 😮

I believe the ident at 23:39 was made specifically for the aftermath of 9/11.
I remember hearing something about that. A neat ident, might I add.

Their logo history seemed like a font identity crisis for a bit during the 70s and early 80s...switching between serif and sans serif before making up their minds. Even in the 2000s and 2010s, they were struggling on which font to stick with because it kept changing slightly between font weights.

So, when did CBS care as Craig Ferguson used to say? 😉
There's not a lotta logos and promos of this magnitude for the CBC, CTV, and Global. Especially during the networks' early years through the 1970s and '80s.

The spotlight ID was in color? I never knew!
It was colorized through some sort of AI software. America would not adapt color television until 1953. And CBS only aired a few color programs from 1955-65. 1965 would be the year they started airing and producing color content for the most part. By the way, the spotlight logo was in use from 1949-51.
