- Alcalá de la Selva is a small and charming town located in the province of Teruel, in the autonomous community of Aragón, Spain.
Of Muslim origin, the castle is not mentioned until the year 1118, when it was donated by Alfonso I of Aragon to Lope Juan de Tarazona. However, after the death of this monarch, it passed back into Muslim hands. Its definitive reconquest took place in 1174 by Alfonso II, and it was returned to Lope Juan de Tarazona, who in turn gave it to Raimundo, prior of Ejea, and to the French abbey of the Great Selva Mayor. From this fact derives the current name of the town, Alcalá de la Selva. In 1375 the castle was sold by the monks to the Fernández de Heredia, lords of the barony of Mora de Rubielos, who used it as an occasional residence.
In 1834 it was occupied by the Carlist forces, later being attacked and largely destroyed by General O'Donnell.
