This should be the training video on how to act with class and integrity. No one person is more important than all of us. There are not enough guys like this in any of our professional sports.
wow Stevie spends his WHOLE speech thanking and appreciating everyone else, he really is the greatest thing to ever happen to the Detroit Red Wings and the city of Detroit. Mr. Classy! he's a legend as a player, a human, a captain, and will soon be as a GM!
Just watched the video again (since when it happened) and cried again like a little girl. I miss Stevie. He was so amazing. People from other cities just don't understand what he meant to Wings fans.
For a franchise drenched in greatness, Stevie will always stand out as my favorite. His calm, powerful leadership and his amazing skill will go down in NHL history. There wasn't a greater moment in my history as a Red Wings fan than seeing him score "the goal." I think everyone knows what I'm talking about.
I worked the night this happened. Didn't have a DVR and the VHS was well outdated and unable to record for me. 4 yrs later this lifetime Red Wing fan (who's first ever NHL experience was watching Bobby Orr skate for the Blackhawks in Olympia) finally took the time to watch this. Thank you so much for posting.
Thanks, smurphman, for posting these 8 vids of "The Captain" and the wonderful ceremony for him. He deserved this and more for being the greatest leader in hockey history. GO WINGS!
Also pretty telling is that he gets the most choked up when he thanked the fans. Glad I got to see him play "in person!" All I get of Howe, Lindsay, Abel, etc is old grainy black & white film!
Well said dazmondo69! I'm a Hawks fan but Stevie was a terror to the Norris division for years and you had to respect him. One of the greatest? Yes. Class orginazation? Yes. I miss watching him play.
out of every sport, stevie Y's the best example of a 'professional' athlete. he never got arrested, never cheated on his wife, never took steroids, never got caught up in any affairs at strip clubs, never intentionally tried to hurt anybody. he improved his game by unselfishly becoming more defensive and scoring fewer goals. he deferred some of his salary to bring in brett hull. and he courageously played and played well with a bad knee his last few years
There's no one, which is a better player of friend(ok, I don't know how he really is, but i think the others don't lie) as Steve Yzerman. This man has shown us all, that icehockey is more than only a sport. It's a life. And I have to say, since 1997, I'm a fan of DRW, 'cause earlier I didn't know, which Team plays in America(I'm Swiss). My First Team are the DRW, and it will be the last, no other team can change my opinion to this team,or my opinion to the best player on the world,Steve Yzerman.
Mario Lemieux , guy lafleur, jean belliveau, rocket richard, mike bossy, brett hull, bobby orr, bobby hull, glen hall, gordie howe!! just some other legends
He never once congradulated himself. Compare this form of sportsmanship and gentlemenly conduct to the "leaders" today (yes, I'm hinting at Cindy Criesby who cries or crosschecks Zetterburg when he looses). I demand the NHL do one of the following; 1) Rename the Lady Byng trophy for sportsmanship in Yzerman's honor 2) Rename the Mark Messiah Leadership Reaward the Steve Yzerman Leadership Reward
what a class act...i really appreciate what he said about redwings nation, for all of us who have been transplanted from detroit and have to put up with abuse, and beer being poured on you, and stuff being thrown at you... he knows that once youre a wing fan, youre always a wing fan. he will always be the captain
I only gave it a thumbs down because it's a good list but only in the last what.....15-20 years? Richard, Howe, Orr, T. Esposito, P. Esposito, Hull, Mikita, Keon, Beliveau, Lafleur, Mahovolich, Sittler, Lindsay, Sawchuck, Hall, Worsley, Gillies, Potvin, Bossy, Trottier... if it's greatest in YOUR LIFETIME...then you obviously forgot Modano, Ciccarelli, Sakic, Forsberg, Hull, Jagr, Ovechkin, Coffey, LEMIEUX.... just sayin...

I looked up the word "class" in the dictionary......there was a picture of Steve Yzerman.
I am also a Hawks fan, however Steve Yzerman truly represents professional athletes at their best.
Total Class.

GOD BLESS YOU STEVIE Y! Thank you for all of the life lasting memories here in Detroit!!! #19 FOREVER!!!
Just watched the video again (since when it happened) and cried again like a little girl. I miss Stevie. He was so amazing. People from other cities just don't understand what he meant to Wings fans.

Wow what an amazing player, I miss being young and watching him play hockey ^_^
true champion and perfect role model. for someone who's accomplished so much over their career, it's amazing how incredibly humble he is!
Steve is the absolute greatest, one of the most talented players of all time and a great human being. So humble and so great.
One of the best players to ever lace em up! Thanks for everything Stevie Y. The greatest captain of all time in any sport, period!

Simply the greatest captain the world sports has ever seen.
Also pretty telling is that he gets the most choked up when he thanked the fans. Glad I got to see him play "in person!" All I get of Howe, Lindsay, Abel, etc is old grainy black & white film!

You have to love Steve Yzerman. Great player, class act, and a champion all the way.

I shed a single man tear on the day they hung his jersey up.

Mark Messier wasn't even the 2nd best captain in history, letalone in Steve Yzerman's league as one.
Steve Yzerman sucks!!!
