Continuing from my last comment: This video is a good example showing that it can still be safe at a junction without traffic lights, and most people here are VERY aware of there surrounding before they cross. It also saves electricity, lets traffic continue to travel without stopping for nobody, and keeps people's eyes on the road.
If a traffic signal is dark, it must be treated as a stop sign by law. Power outages are a part of life. A battery back up system can be purchased for 5 or 6 grand, and it could power the intersection for a few hours in case of a power out.
In England there is a special highway organization that suggest traffic lights should not be used near as much as they are now and suggest they can be more dangerous. /the organization says there more dangerous because the lights take your eyes off the road, and pose risks as people dont normally check there surroundings because they watch the lights. It can also hold up traffic that does not need to wait, and uses much electricity.
totally agree. I think signs can be good and give way/stop signs can be good most of the time. But traffic lights are the biggest issues I think. And yes the green tells road users to >>> go, move faster, beat the red lights, I have the rights, and takes eyes off the road. And a lot of times when you stop for a red light, it can be for nothing or only 1 person. I like the American turning system were you can turn right on red. It would save so much time, and prevent the lights from changing. I'll have to find a video link of what the organisation has done. =)
That's not a very busy cross street if this is considered rush hour. honestly I think the 2 videos show that the tax payers here have been suckered out of the price difference between 2 stop signs and 4 powered traffic lights.
