Mark Knopfler is one of my favorite human beings on the planet. It's so kind of you to take the time to deconstruct his music for us. What a treat. Thank you so much, Phil.
It's absolutely my pleasure. It's a treat for me to do it for you too. MK is a very special talent and person and it's a privilege to spread the word. 👍👍
Finding your channel has made my day. You have inspired me to try finger style again and to play some Dire Straits, the band that got me into guitar in the first place. Thanks for the effort to put this channel together !
Thanks Dale. I really appreciate your comment and it's great that your are getting back into finger style playing again. Like you, it was DS that got me into guitar way back in the 70s and I love playing just as much today as I did then. Thanks again
first video of your channel ive seen so checked out all your stuff. anyone that appreciates MK as much as i can tell you do is a smart guy, great instructions. subscribed
Ah, fantastic. Thanks so much for the comments. I just love doing these videos so when I get comments like this, it makes my day. Thanks a million and welcome to the gang🤓
Hi Phil, this sounds amazing and you're a very good teacher.. Thanks a lot... Is there any URL where we can find the tabs you're using ? Thanks in advance for any answer you can give. Have a great play!
Thank you very much. I really appreciate your comments. Regarding tabs, I have never used them. My strong preference has always been to play entirely by ear - I have tried tabs but find they are a little bit too blunt, particularly for a style like MKs way of playing as it's really difficult to get across the nuance in tab form. I learn everything by just using my ears and checking videos for fingerboard positions. I know a lot of people like tabs, but I think you will get a much better end result by persevering with the "by ear" approach. I also try to concentrate on getting the video angles in my tutorials in a place where you can see my fingering and picking method without the need for tabs. I hope that explains it okay for you. Thanks again.
Excellent talk through Phil. You have a lot of heavy gear behind you, would it be more constructive to let people know what effect pedals, amp settings and such you are using? A very long time ago, Marshall 2 x12, Tokai Strat used the volume pot to fade in/out but hey ho great version. 👍
Thanks for getting in touch - always makes my day. I think you're right. I'm should really get into the habit of doing something about the amp settings etc. I've got the ready of the series filmed already, but what I will do is put the settings in the descriptions so people can replicate. Great idea and thanks for getting in touch.
@@philcaffrey I'm old codger now Phil, days of basic cheap fuzz boxes. Best pedal I ever had was a 4 pound wah pedal, it was so bad could play Silver Machine without the studio effects! But keep it up Phil :)
Nice job, thanks. May I ask what software you use to decode all MK secrets. It seems that there are lot of differencies in softwares especially when played with slowed down tempos. Of course ears are also as important to hear all nuancies and they get better all the time with work :)
Hi. So sorry it has taken me so long to reply. I don't really use any software. I spend a lot of time repeating certain passages and listening very hard. I do also try if I can to find some visual reference material for some songs too - TH-cam is of course great for that. This can be important as occasionally it's not clear exactly where on the fingerboard MK begins the riff or phrase. YT is also good for an occasional "slow down" of the playback speed if a passage is particularly intricate. This has it's dangers because MK will have recorded at full speed, likely repeating take after take with variation and then picking the best for the final version. I like to try to retain a certain looseness that doing this brings to his music and so I only do it this way if I'm really struggling to find the secret. I always maintain that the most powerful weapons you have are not your fingers, amp, strings, guitar type, pickups etc, but your ears. I have spent nearly 50 years decoding MKs music this way, and i just don't that it's the most musical - not always the quickest, but I think it helps get better results. Hope that makes sense. Thanks again for being in touch - really appreciated
Hi. As Dimitri's said, I mention this at 1:03, but it's worth adding that I also have the main amp model set so the blue light is illuminated. This can help the sound too. 👍

Would you take a look at So Far Away? There are barely any lessons on YT and none are really accurate!
Hi. Thanks for the question. I'll definitely add that to the list.
