Brilliant! My mind is blown 🤯 it never occurred to me to gesso my coloring pages. I’m thinking using a rubber spatula to spread the gesso will eliminate the brush strokes. Definitely doing this❣️thank you for sharing
You are an amazing artist!! I enjoy watching you.... the time and patience you take with each piece of a picture or drawings ...BRILLIANT!!! So lovely!!!
Isn't she amazing! She has some absolutely stunning coloring pages. Sometimes she'll do a time laps to relaxing music. It blows my mind that she's so gosh darn talented and humble as well.
Thanks for this video. I am in the process of trying this clear gesso on one of my Romantic Country coloring books. I used 3 coats of the gesso and a hair dryer like you show here. I placed heavy books on the top. I will try the paper clips next time. I plan to use my Arteza watercolor pencils and then either Arteza colored pencils or Prismacolor pencils to shade. I am excited to try it.
I've been wondering about gesso for some of my coloring books that have thinner paper. I'm going to definitely have to get some and try it out! Thank you! :)
Thank you so much for making this video! It's great when you find a product that really works well, and with all these water media and different colored pencils, plus alcohol markers!. I must go add it to my Amazon list. I'm guessing the price will go way up due to your review, Lol.
Oh gosh, I'm so glad to finally figure out how to make createspace paper work so much better, and tomorrow my new watercolor pencils arrive! Now, I just need to get some of the same gesso you're using. I watched several of your videos while you were working out what would work well for you, and I'm glad you did it :-) Thank you so much for sharing, and uploading this video! I don't know what took me so long! I had already subscribed to your channel, and have my bell turned on :-) I love your videos, and am going to watch more now
Now that is good to know. I want a way to use my Tombow water based markers in colouring books. Straight to paper is impossible to blend and ends up very streaky. I can't use these pens on the Windsor and Newton Gesso because the gritty feel will ruin the nibs. Great video. Full of really useful information.
I forgot to try waterbased markers, Sue. I don't have the Tombow ones but I have a few other various ones. I'll give them a try and let you know if they went streaky 😄
I know what you mean. If it works for all other waterbased mediums, I don't see why not waterbased markers. And, they do work in the other gritty gesso fine but like you said, then the problem is the grittyness.
Thanks for this I am now using it when I want to water colour in my colouring book. Now people are doing videos about how to use clear gesso in colouring book and how good it is when using other medium beside colour pencils. I wish they would give you credit for it though.
Oh, I do have a suggestion, put some wax paper or or plastic underneath the page and apply a good layer of acrylic and spread with a credit or gift card from a store. Then you don't have to worry about brush marks.
I definitely need to try that, Keni, thanks. I was a bit worried that it would leave big lines at the edges but I'm starting a new pic today so i'll give it a go 😁😁😁
Thank you very much for this interesting information! Of course, my giant tub of gesso is of a different brand... I was especially interested to hear that the Derwent Artists work quite well with it, as they are an ongoing problem 😁 By the way, I ordered the 72 set of the Procolours today as they were on a bargain price at Amazon for around 116 €. They will arrive on Wednesday and I'm really excited to see if they have some of the unique shades that the Artists have as well...
Oh, I think I'm going to have to get those Procolours, Heike. I just can't get them off my mind. Especially when I read your messages about them, 😂 You are a bad, bad influence on me 😂 The Derwent artist pencils definitely worked better on this gesso. I didn't try a lot of colours but I reckon if those harder blues worked, then the others should be good. Did you get the full set of Derwent Artists? If so, have you tried the Indigo? I don't know whether mine is faulty but I can hardly get any pigment out of it at all. It just kind of squeeks on the page and barely anything comes off it.
Wonderful video, Rebecca, thank you so much! Really exciting find. I've been looking at gesso and watercolor ground videos to use with watercolor, and hadn't found any that seemed like "the one". A question for you if you see this: It looked like the watercolor almost beaded up in the first application with the pink frosting. When you added more, the result did not seem to have any light to dark variation. Did you experience it that way, or does it have more personality than I saw in your brief example? Would you recommend this gesso strictly for watercolor in coloring books? Thanks very much for whatever info you can provide. 🙏 (Oh my! Just say the year you made this video! My question may be completely irrelevant now, and you might not see it...in any case, cheers, and thanks again.)
Is this smooth or grainy? I have Liquitex, it’s almost impossible to find where I live. The Diana Wakely is very smooth, geared for paper crafters and is now available on Amazon?
Using a sponge instead of the brush gives a smother finish. You do not even need to sand the page after it has dried. If you do just sand lightly and the page will be smooth.
Thanks so much for that. I'm having a problem with the lines of the paintbrush so I will try the sponge. I also need to try the sandpaper trick as well 😍
The type of gesso I tried was like sandpaper when it dried, and just ate up lead on my pencils - like coloring on sandpaper. Does this actually dry smooth? Thanks!
It doe's dry smooth, yes. That's why I was so delighted with it. Be careful of brush marks though. Try to get it as smooth as possible. I've had a couple of people advise me to spread it on with a credit card so I'm going to give that a go 😁
I'm so excited and very hopeful now that you proved that it definately works so much better!!! Thanks for showing us what an improvement it makes!!!! I have a jar, but I only tried it once and only did one layer and didn't know to try three layers!!! WOW!!! Now, I have two questions....if you don't mind. What do you use to clean the gesso brush afterwards??? And, two, Would a heat gun work as well, or would that be too hot??? I only have a big hair dryer, and it would be more convenient to use a heat gun that I can keep in my craft room!!!! You are such a fabulous You-Tuber!!! I love watching you, and, I can't tell you how many books I haave ordered after you havae reviewed them!!!! And, you are such a great artist!!! I wish you had time to also do more coloring pages, because I love your artwork and have learned so much from you!!
Hi Nancy, thank you so much, I really appreciate your lovely comments 😁 Firstly, I try not to let any of the gesso dry on the brush while I'm using it. I try to do the whole thing quickly and frequently rinse the brush out in a jar of water. Make sure to squeeze the excess water out with a cloth before dipping back into the gesso. Then when I'm finished I just give it a good rinse under the tap, warm water, and then I just put a blob of hand wash on the palm of my hand and gently rub this into the brush then rinse. I did get a few little bits of gesso dry on the outer bristles so I used a nail brush to brush the paintbrush and it came off. Yes, I think a heat gun would probably be fine. One mistake I did make on another coloring book, last night, was not letting the page cool before painting another layer of gesso. This made the gesso dry a little while painting it on and it got a bit thick and congealed which meant the brush marks were more prominent. The smoother you can get the gesso on the page, the better your coloured pencils will blend to a smooth finish.
Hi Rebecca, can you blend markers with the gesso on it ? l have just ordered some from USA , l cannot believe it is cheaper to buy in US than in Australia.we are so expensive here .
Hi Beverley, I didn't actually try out blending with the alcohol markers. I only checked to see if it bled through the page. Sorry about that. I'll have a little go at blending them and let you know 😁
I’ve rewatched this video after first watching it. I’ve been getting into watercolour pencils more and was thinking of using it for the horrible CreateSpace paper. I have tried the white gesso but my 1st attempt wasn’t brilliant. But I didn’t dry it in between layers. Is there any big difference between using white and clear as the white dries nearly clear anyway. The brand I used was DecoArt Media.
Hi, Capyboppy. I've never tried white gesso on coloring books so I don't really know what it's like. I used clear simply because it wouldn't cover up the linework.
Great, thanks! I just ordered mine. ;). Like you, I'm trying to combine wet and dry media, but the gesso I've been using doesn't play well with pencils. I'll be eager to see any tutorials you have where you combine wet media and pencils. Do you ever do water-blending with water-based markers? I'm figuring out Zig Clear Color Real Brush markers, and I'd love to see what you'd do with them or with something similar. I hope you're having fun with your new gesso!
Hi Macrina. I don't actually have any waterbased markers yet. I am wanting to get those Zig Clear Color Real Brush that you mention. They are on my wish list and I might treat myself to them for Christmas....or maybe I should just go ahead and order them now, lol 👹
Oh, they're so much fun. And they work great with this gesso, I've found. By the way, are your links affiliate links? If so, would you include links to Amazon USA as well as UK? I'm happy to support your channel if I'm buying something you recommend. :)
How many layers of gesso did you use? Also does using a hairdryer stop pages from curling when using other wet media? Thanks! I hope you still check this channel as I just noticed this was four years ago! 😄
Hi Melinda, I may have used 3 thin layers. Not sure if 3 are absolutely neccessary though, 2 is probably enough. It really depends on how thick the layers are. Using a hairdryer does help stop the pages curling when applying this gesso as it's dry before it has time to fully soak into the paper and curl it. Once the page is gesso'd, it will massivly reduce the curling of the paper when using wet media. I'm not sure if drying that wet media with a dryer will make any difference as the page is already kind of protected from curling with the gesso.
The Art Spirits The Art Spirits Thanks. I am new to water coloring. What size was the brush for the gesso and once you use it for gesso is it ruined for watercoloring?
I realise this is an old video but I’m hoping you might be able to help me? I’m desperately searching for something that I can use over printed images/digital stamps to then colour in to stop the printer ink from smearing whilst colouring? Do you know if this gesso will work or can you suggest anything else? Thank you 😊
I'm in the same boat, Estelle. I would love to be able to print onto watercolor paper but inkjet printer ink isn't waterproof. Unfortunately, I haven't found a solution. Laser printer in is ok, BUT, my laser printer will not print on watercolor paper as it's too thick. It's very difficult to find a reasonably priced laser printer that will print on thick paper/card. I would imagine this gesso may make the printer ink run too. You could experiment though. You should be able to get a waterproof ink for stamps.
I found the solution. Spread a layer of matte gel medium on a Gel plate and pull if off with your printed image. This seals the paper 😄 you might need to do it a couple of times depending on the medium you’re using.
The page will warp while wet. To reduce this, use paper clips or bulldog clips to hold the corners down. Dry with a hair dryer between each layer. If you leave it to air dry, it will curl up really bad as the moisture has more time to sink deeper into the paper. You will see the paper flattening back out as you dry it. If you want it to be completely flat afterward, make sure it is totally dry, place it on a flat surface and put loads of heavy books on top and leave it until the next day. Then it will be super flat.
Probably not Rosa. You could do a little test on one of the back pages to see how it is. I've stopped applying this to thicker paper now. I'll only use it on the thinner papers that seep through.

So very informative, Rebecca. You have definitely sold me on the value of Art Basics Clear Gesso...it's in my cart. Thanks so much for all you do.
Thanks, Gemma. Glad I could be of help😁
Oh, thank you, thank you! 👏👏🌟💕💕 I so appreciate having this info. I also appreciate your time in sharing with us. 🤗💕
...and I just placed this in my Amazon (Columbus, Ohio, US) cart 😁; $10.70 for those of you wanting to know.
What a great idea for coloring books. Thank you so much for sharing this!
I love how you test things and share. I so love your channel ❤️ Ordered clear gesso too 👍😉
Thanks so much. I have problems with my hands and this looks like it will make it easier for me to color without pain. 🥰🤩
I need it in my life! I hope it'll make me love my inktense pencils.
I bet it will 😁
I am looking forward to seeing you use the Derwent Artist pencils. I too love all of the colors!
You are an amazing artist!! I enjoy watching you.... the time and patience you take with each piece of a picture or drawings ...BRILLIANT!!! So lovely!!!

The Art Spirits that would be great. The problem on the paper is that the inks soaks in instantly so you can't move or blend the colour at all.

The Art Spirits yay! A new picture!
Great video, will be getting this. With inktense your better off just letting them dry in between colours, maybe worth trying.
It was dry lol. That's the only problem with the gesso. Even the inktense lifts back up easily. 🙄

Does the watercolour also give the watercolour like effects? Like colours blending into each other wet on wet?
Greetings Gerda
Not as well as real watercolor paper.
OOooOo gotta get me some. I gave up as the gesso I tried left a plastic feel and the watercolor just sat on top and didn't want to dry..it was weird..
Yep, it does take a lot longer to dry on the gesso unfortunately. I just speed it up with the hair dryer though 😁

Yes. Lol you mentioned it. So you should use it it is very effective.
Ahh, right, I thought you mean't I had actually used the sandpaper in the video lol. I will order some and try it😂😂

This is a great video, thanks! Which brush are you using?
Thank you. I'm using a Zen Filbert brush to apply the gesso and for the painting, I'm using a Princeton 4050 Synthetic Round No 5😄
The Art Spirits The Art Spirits Thanks. I am new to water coloring. What size was the brush for the gesso and once you use it for gesso is it ruined for watercoloring?

The page will warp while wet. To reduce this, use paper clips or bulldog clips to hold the corners down. Dry with a hair dryer between each layer. You just answered my question.!!!!
Thx so much
Do I need to gesso paper that’s thick and smooth; like the Camila D’errico book?
Probably not Rosa. You could do a little test on one of the back pages to see how it is. I've stopped applying this to thicker paper now. I'll only use it on the thinner papers that seep through.
The Art Spirits thank you so much; that’s what I thought thin quality like jade summers, Heather Valentin etc I should apply if using wet medium; the Gesso u are using her leaves it smooth finish not rough right? I know there is a Gesso that leaves a rough finish; do not want that; also can u recommend what are good oil pastel pencils to use with linseed oil? I do not like the Art Loft brand; sticky and chalky; it was cheap so no big deal😉
I'm not really sure about oil pastel pencils, to be honest, Rosa, I've never used them.
The satin glazing liquid by Golden seems to work best for watercolor on coloring books. I discovered it after making this video. Here is a link to a more updated video that I made about which primers are best for coloring books. th-cam.com/video/2Tnljg69BZc/w-d-xo.html
This Art Basics Gesso has a smooth finish but is thick and does sometimes leave brush strokes. I find it works really great with colored pencils though. The satin glazing liquid is not a gesso at all and is not intended to be used for priming coloring books, lol, but actually works really great.
Enjoyed your video
Brilliant
That is great , will it work with Copic markers ?
Yes, should do Beverly 😁
Just a heads up, in my extensive research into gesso and coloring I’ve learned it does damage Copic tips. The nibs are very delicate so it’s not recommended that you use them on paper that you’ve used Gesso. Dede Willingham has a video where she tests a bunch of mediums and talks about the Copics’ risks.
Hi from a new subscriber 😊 can you tell me what brand of Watercolour paints you're using here please?
Hi, I was using Winsor & Newton artist paints, Albrecht Durer Watercolour Pencils and Derwent Inktense Pencils.
The sand paper trick was yours. ( in the 1srt video you did you compared gesso and another product) Have you forgotten that . you should not lol.😉
Haha, are you sure??? I have no recollection of ever using sandpaper, although, I remember a few people suggesting it to me. If I have, then I must be losing my mind 😂😂😂 You've got me worried now 😂😂😂
Um, she never said anything about the sandpaper trick. Listen close she says it makes it feel like sandpaper. Then a few seconds later she said the gesso sanded the colored pencil into like a dust when she tried using them on it.
Used clear plastic board dollar tree
Oh it’s a hair dryer; thanks
