      Wow Guyana, that’s cool! Honestly, I’m not sure. If I were you, I would contact the spain embassy in your country. Try to email or call them until you are able to get in contact with them. Ask them what options you have for teaching English. There are many programs but I am not sure about Guyana. Perhaps try google and see what options you can find. Every country has different policies and rules, so I don’t want to give you wrong information. Alright, all the best!

      S. Williams hey thanks for watching, you might have to google or search in the Madrid auxiliares Facebook group for more details, but from what I've read it's not an accredited masters, so if you want to go and get a Phd you probably won't get credit for this program in the USA. Also, you still won't get certified as a teacher to teach in the US. Probably just Spain and depends on the type of school. Check the website and you can probably contact previous students in the program. I've heard mixed experiences, but then again that is true for many programs.Thank you for watching!

    • @LindseyDara
      @LindseyDara  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are British with a TEFL, you can probably directly apply to any academy in Spain. Though I don’t know if the brexit situation makes it difficult to get work in Spain, but I’m guessing it is still much easier than for Americans. Another possible program that I believe is still taking applicants is MEDDEAS, Link is above. British council has a program too, all links above, but I don’t know if the deadline has passed. For Americans the deadline is April 7th! So check out MEDDEAS and British council program, or consider working at an academy. Let me know if you have more questions!

    Hi Lindsey, I am researching about opportunities to teach in Spain. Thank you for this video, it's been very informative. I have a question though. You mentioned for the second group of schools that you need to be a certified teacher. I have a TESOL certificate and have taught and been a director of a school since 2015 and wanted to know if this would count as being a certified teacher.

    • @LindseyDara
      @LindseyDara  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dana Cook so I think you are asking about teaching at an international school? such as the American school of Barcelona, and for this type of school you need to have a K-12 or K-5 or (whatever grades you teach) Certification to teach those grades. Typically people with a degree in early childhood education or like maybe a high school history teacher would need a teacher certification to teach children in the K-12 setting. So the type of certification you would need comes from completing college course work towards teaching in a K-12 setting, typically including student teaching as well.
      Now you mention you have a TESOL Certification and you are the director of a school. Depending on your nationality those qualifications can mean different things. If you’re American, a TESOL Certification to teach in like an after school type English academy is generally not enough to teach in Spain legally, you also need an EU work Visa, and typically Americans get those by being married to or living with an EU Citizen. If you’re from the EU or UK already, a TESOL Certification is all you need to work in an after school/work language academy. As far as being a director goes, I’m not sure what you would be qualified for Abroad. If you have a degree in educational leadership you would probably qualify to be a principal or hold some admin position at an international school. If you have any further questions, just let me know. Thanks for watching!

    Hi Lindsey, I'm very interested in teaching English in Spain or anywhere else in Europe. I'm American and speak both English and Spanish so would prefer to teach in Spain. However I'm wondering what would be the best way for me to teach abroad. I do have a bachelors degree in Health Sciences which is not education related but hoping that is acceptable. Also I have looked into maybe getting the TEFL or TESOL certification if that would help. I've also been thinking about getting a teaching degree so I can teach at a public school. What are your thoughts of what I could do to help my chances of teaching abroad?

    Hi Lindsey, Im going to Spain but I don't want to commit to a long contract. Is there a month to month contract or something that's a couple months where I can renew if I'm enjoying it. • @LindseyDara
      @LindseyDara  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Josh Koett hi josh thanks for watching! Well I’m assuming your American or Canadian? If you’re from the UK then everything is easier and you can get a job at any language academy and stay for as long as you want. If you’re American or Canadian and don’t have an additional European passport then legal options are limited to mostly the programs I’ve listed. Most programs are 8-9 months running from October-May. You have 90 days on a regular American passport to travel around Spain if you choose not to do a program. You could teach private classes on the side, but legally you just have 90 days and then you are suppose to return to your country. Thank you for watching! Let me know if you have any other questions!

    I thought most of it for us Americans was black market work. DoD or an International School are my two options. I think the Language Assistant's pay is likely meager. I know what DoD salaries are like, but LA salaries are unknown to me. How vast is the difference?

    • @LindseyDara
      @LindseyDara  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      lockergr if you already have a teaching degree/certification then yes it makes more sense to teach at an international school or DoD school. DoDs pay the most + moving and living expenses. It’s a full time job, unlike the language assistants where it is only 12-25 hours a week. Some teachers do the language assistant to take a break from full-time teaching. The pay is much lower than the US, but if you live outside of Madrid, you can live a pretty good lifestyle on 700-1000 euros, especially on Andalucia. I lived better in Spain on 900 euros than in the US as a full time teacher. Less expenses and cheap lifestyle. Average salaries in Spain are between 800-1300 euros and that’s for people working full time. You can earn extra cash by teaching private classes which many assistants do. Some double their salaries.
      You can live like a king in spain on DOD salary, you can look it up but upwards of over $45-55K starting out plus living expenses paid etc. I don’t know how easy it is to get spain as your first choice, bc it’s military and European schools are popular. Keep in mind average salary in Spain is perhaps 18-22K a year so 45K is big money there, even in dollars.
      Then you have American schools in Madrid and BCN which I don’t know exactly but after taxes are taken about, you could have 1800-2200 gross euros perhaps, usually you pay for living expenses though. Im honestly not super sure on those salaries.
      And of course Language assistants make the least but also work the least in general 12-25 hours depending on the program. This is a totally legal option, and maybe in your case, if you wanted to take a break from full-time or full responsibilities this could be an option. This is public or private K-12 type school.
      Working at an after school language academy would be illegal without a work permit.
      Kinda depends on your goals and how long you want to stay, what type of lifestyle you want, etc. but there are several legal options. Hope that’s helps!

    • @LindseyDara
      @LindseyDara  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately no, unless you are from The UK or the EU or hold a passport within the EU. If you do. You can teach anywhere in spain at a language school specifically for learning English. They are usually in every city. If you aren’t from the EU, if you’re american like me, a tesol or tefl certificate won’t do you much good, in applying for a program. You still need a degree to apply to a program. Now, in Asia or South America you could get away with just a tefl Bc there are different passport requirements. But as of right now in Spain it is not enough. That being said, in a couple of years that may change, Bc of the brexit situation. If the UK leaves the EU, then Americans probably will have more equal opportunities. Right now most tefl certificates people must be from UK or EU to work in Spain. I hope I didn’t confuse you too much! What country are you from?

    • @LindseyDara

      Pedro Sanchez well, if you are American, you will most likely be teaching "under the table" which is kinda risky, and legally you are only allowed 3 months (90 days in Spain) without a special visa. If you don't mind risking get in trouble, then I guess you can try it. If you have a European passport, then yes you can go and find work much easier I think and legally. If you don't plan on staying longer than 3 months anyway, then you don't really need a special visa. Hope that helps!

    • @hipretty
      @hipretty 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Lindsey, I hope all is well. If you go there for a 3 month visit without the visa...can you leave and go touring around other countries and then just come right back? Do you have any idea that time period for staying out and then coming back? Or do you have to return to the states and show that on your passport and then come back? Since I missed the A.C. program it will be a another year. 😔 Just wondering if I went and checked things out in advance, if it pays to do that, especially if we would be going as a family. Just wondering if you MUST come all the way back home to the states, but since there is no requirement for a visa, if there for no more than 3 months...maybe that's not even necessary. As always thank you for any and all your input! 😊

    • @LindseyDara
      @LindseyDara  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      hipretty when you go to Europe, you can go visit anywhere in Europe within the 3 months. After 3 months you must go back to the US. So you can go to Spain for 2 weeks then France for a week then Germany, etc. But after 90 days you must return to the US or you run the risk of getting in trouble. Not sure the exact repercussions, but anyway, you can travel within Europe anywhere up to 90 days :)

    • @hipretty
      @hipretty 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ohhhhh!! I misunderstood! I thought you can only stay in that particular country (not Europe all together) 90 days. I thought you can then go to another country after the 90 days and perhaps stay there for that length of time as well. How then do people go traveling for a year? if it is all of Europe for 90 days!
      And you don't know after returning to USA how long a wait until you can go back? Thanks for all your info. I had no idea. 🤔

    • @LindseyDara
      @LindseyDara  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      hipretty If you're European citizen (have a passport) you can live and travel and work pretty much freely around Europe as long as you want. If you're from the US or Canada you only have 90 days (in Europe specifically, but you can travel on to Asia or Africa and extend your travel for as long as you can stay legal in the new country or another continent without returning to the US), other people who aren't European staying longer in Europe are either overstaying illegally or have a European passport as well (from a parent born in Europe or grandparent). Every country/continent has different laws regarding travel. There are different travel regulations for Asia or South America that are different from Europe as well. If you google state department travel you can find out more about travel regulations in different countries/continents. :)

      Lindsey LaVida Yah working on my apps to send in asap! Just got nervous bc I wanted to be able to apply to several programs so that I can have a better chance of finding a position so fingers crossed and thanks for the detailed help Lindsey! One quick question: the Language Assistant program, do you know if I can apply without the criminal background and the medical check? I couldn't tell if those documents are going to be required later but not now.

    • @LindseyDara
      @LindseyDara  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Victoria Rogers yes you can do your background check and medical check later, probably in may or June is fine. Just fill out all the other info on profex. also, you will probably definitely get in on the language assistants unless your application number is really high. But yes you should definitely get in on at least one of the programs! All the best!! Let me know if you have any more questions!

      The first one on the list is the biggest and most popular and it is free to apply to! (North American Language and Cultural Ambassadors) The others can vary from s few hundred to over a thousand depending on the extra services they provide.

    • @LindseyDara
      @LindseyDara  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Australians can also apply, but the website is different. I would type into google "language assistants Spain ministry of education" and the Australian link should come up. Also, if you want, I have a facebook group and I know there are several Aussies in there, that may be able to direct you if you have more Australian specific questions.

    • @LindseyDara
      @LindseyDara  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      hipretty for the particular program with CIEE, no because it's only 3 months. Americans can stay in Europe 3 months without a visa. If you're from Europe I guess you can stay longer without a visa, I'm not actually sure how that works. Good question though!

    • @LindseyDara
      @LindseyDara  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you look in the description and scroll down to the resources guide, I believe these ones are open to Europeans. (Numbers 1,2,3,5,6,7,9) Mostly all because you don’t need a special visa, or program to teach in Spain unlike Americans. You can just go. If one sounds good to you, email the program to make sure they accept people from your country. Good luck!

    • @LindseyDara
      @LindseyDara  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on what type of teacher. You could work at an international British school or at a language academy generally after school hours. But you will not be able to be a teacher in the public sector unless you go through Spanish teacher education. In your situation I would recommend going the private international school route for best pay. :)

I have met teachers from Australia, New Zealand, Philippines and South Africa. If there is a program you are interested in, you should email them and ask if you can apply.
