【4K】Kyoto's Largest Antiques Market - 東寺 終い弘法 京都 | Japan walking guide

Toji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage, is symbolized by the five-storied Pagoda. It is usually a quiet, solemn place, but on the 21st of every month, it shows us a different side altogether.
At the Koubou Ichi Market, there are more shops that deal in textiles and antiques such as ceramic plates and vases, than food. The local people refer to Koubou Ichi Market as a "textile market," "antique market," or call it "Koubou-san," with affection.
The stalls are lined with antiques, kimono, yukata, obi, crap, and so on.
In addition, there were a wide variety of foods, such as oobanyaki, takoyaki, okonomiyaki, smelt tempura, beans, kelp,crepe pepper, rice cake, and mentaiko, as well as New Year supplies and houseplants.
Currently, about 1,200 shops come out for the Koubou Ichi Market. Even though they create an atmosphere of a marketplace, the monks can be heard chanting the sutra in the temple halls.

東寺ゆかりの弘法大師・空海は、835（承和2）年3月21日に高野山で亡くなったことから、毎月21日は弘法大師の月命日となり、偲んで多くの人びとが社寺を参拝するようになったそうです。
当初は年に１回行われていたものが、１２３９年以降は毎月行われるようになり、現在では多数の露店が立ち並ぶ縁日となっていて、縁日を目的とする人も少なくなくなっています。
露店には一般の方による出店ではなく業者さんによる骨董品、着物、浴衣、帯、がらくたなどが並びます。
そのほかに大判焼き、たこ焼き、お好み焼き、ワカサギの天ぷら、豆類、昆布、ちりめん山椒、おもち、明太子などの食べ物や正月用品、観葉植物など多種多様なものが並んでいました。
毎月行われる弘法市の中でも、まさに一年の締めくくりとなる大切な縁日である「終い弘法」は大変な人で賑わっていました。
