I would use felt, like most musical instruments
before you remove rubber piece try to wipe,for me wiping was enough.if wiping didn't work then remove it
Rubber piece came off almost immediately
This reminds me of a keyboard with case or plate foam and it'll dampen the sound to make it sound thockyer
