    AMEN. I routinely credit zenithal highlighting for color variation, and do zero shading, washing, or glazing. (........also, I don't know how to glaze)

    • @nekrataali
      @nekrataali 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Go to your local art store and ask about acrylic glazing medium. I use Golden's Open Matte/Gloss gel medium. You just mix your paint with the gel (50:50 is a good place to start) and viola...you have your glaze. You can paint it directly over your zenithal highlight for instant tone transitions. The medium will turn your paint translucent, but not runny like you would experience with water. It will have the consistency of paint straight out of the tube.

    Long time mini painter myself. Great tips in this vid, some I learned on my own through trial and error. One thing I see occasionally and wonder how much time is saved by painting complex assemblies separately then assembling once most of the basecoating is applied.

    • @thomasjones3221
      @thomasjones3221 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      it depends on the model. sometimes yes. sometimes no. if painting unassembled would make it easier to paint, then paint that way. if it wouldn't make a difference, assemble than paint

    • @warsmithmia
      @warsmithmia 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I know Marco Frisoni of Not Just Mecha assembles first and doesn't subscribe to subassemblies. His reasoning is that if I can't reach it with a brush, it can stay in shadow.

    I really need to get an airbrush. I am getting all 3 (5 brush) sets of Artis Opus brushes this month though, so it has to wait a little while longer. I really should get one though, but honestly I'm painting black templars right now, so not needed as much as with some other minis.
    I still have my Death Guard sitting in boxes though, I think when I move onto painting these I could maybe benefit from an air brush a lot more.
    Also I plan on starting a Tyranid Army after the partial range refresh in a couple of months, so maybe this would be an army I can use airbrushing on a lot more. TBH for my Nids though I was going to start using contrast paints a lot more. I seen some of the stuff that Tyler Mengel did in pinks, purples and beige tones (perfect for Hivefleet Leviathan) and think this method would be great for my Tyranids.
    Honestly though, I see the work you're doing with the air brush and it really makes me want to pick one up. If I am going to though I think I will pick up a decent dual action brush as I'd like to throw myself right in there and learn to paint with one of these. I know people often recommend buying a cheaper air brush to start with, and this is solid advice. I would likely rush out and buy a better brush though almost immediately afterwards, so it would actually save me time and money to just buy the nicer one right away.
    They have some nice air brushes on the Artis Opus site as well, so likely will pick up one of those. I am not sure at all about compressor though. I know the good ones cost a lot of money. You think I could just start with a cheaper compressor to start with, or are they hugely inferior? I good iwata one is my goal, but buying both the airbrush and good compressor with one months pay is likely not the best move.
    PS: Great advice/video. Thanks.

    I never do shading on my minis, since i paint mostly history stuff. There was no shading at all on uniforms and it looks really fake to me.

    Uhm....does the mini with the two axes got its right hand on the left side and the left one on the right? 🥴

    Lylaaaaa! Such incredible concise advice, as usual. The idea of painting the inner areas first didn't make sense to me until now when I realized that rather than just doing one colour all over the model (and saving time from switching colours), it makes sense to do the trick-to-access areas first to safe time from having to correct mistakes (which I think is a lot more than switching colours), just like you said. Really great video.

    fu#k, you are beautiful. I don't just mean your looks. I'm an artist with a degree. I used to do comic book pencil and ink, but started painting miniatures about 6 years ago... you are bad ass

    Good advices. Except - translucent colors first? That seems really counter intuitive. I always paint more transparent colors, when i have already established proper undertones, which will recieve transparent colors better. Lemon Yellow on Ochre for example. Thats way easier to paint layer of paint with good opacity and then work on it with proper transparent color.
    Also slight trick, to mix colors in airbrush put in on the side. Might require bigger cup. It never really does mix that well when you use paint straight from bottle. And i personally dont like to waste time to mix it is some other container.

      If you want to paint a yellow highlight to black shadow, it makes more sense to paint the whole area yellow and paint down to black, compared to painting the whole thing black and then trying to paint up to yellow.

      @@LylaMev Does it? You said yourself, paint first parts of the mini that are closer to its center. Shadow is closer to its center. Lots of shadow areas there.
      Also when you paint translucent color over dark primers arent you essentially do paint yellow over dark, then back again? Seems like double work for me.
      My go to Yellow right now is - VMA - BURNT UMBER - VMA OCRE - VGA Moon Yellow

      I think you are both right depending if you want to use the transparency to your advantage, either to create transitioning or blending, or work around it, because what you want is a solid layer.

    Wonderful videos, friendly advice, please reconsider using your skin to put paint on ( consider an old leather white glove or sth along this idea) as paint is absorbed by the skin and is carcinogenic.
