@Mattie1979 dw, me too. Some of them have negative apparent magnitudes (that means very bright if you don't know what that is) so that's what I'm relying on
@@k.editzz8 Fri and Sat should be the best 2 days with some (but less) on Thurs (today) and then Sun and Mon.(Maybe a few but less.) The cool thing is we might go through a dense patch causing much more than expected. (It's hard to calculate it accurately.) The prediction is a good show this year. I JUST SAW IT AT 9:10 PM TODAY , IT WAS MY FRIST TIME THE COLOR OF THE SHOOTING STAR IS THE SAME AS SHE TOLD OMGG😍😍😭😭. I only saw one tho. But I still love it
I was lucky enough to see one last night at exactly 20:55 (8:55 pm)… …it was incredible b/c even though it was mostly cloudy… …this meteor was apparently so big and bright that I was still able to see it through the thick clouds.☁️ I called my brother immediately. I told him I just witnessed seeing a super bright meteor streak straight down from the heavens as I was driving. Grateful to see just the one. ☄️
I wish everyone a clear sky. -- Unlike other meteors, which originate from comets, the Geminids come from an Asteroid - 3200 Phaethon - which is nearly 3 miles across and orbits the sun every 1.4 years. Earth will cross over that path this weekend. It should be good if you can view it. Sorry if your sky is cloudy. ( If it is... check the internet for pictures or videos later)
Some of the pieces burning up are only the size of an apple seed but can still produce a quick bright streak. The bigger the piece, the brighter and longer the streak of light. Big chunks can give you a Fireball. That's what I would love to see. You never know what is out there just waiting to burn up.
Actually ; Every day 100 tons of meteoric material reaches earths surface. This includes both space dust as well as pieces that don't burn up. The reason you don't here about more chunks hitting Earth is because of the surface being about 70% water. Right now there is a splash in the ocean somewhere.
I read an article recently that the with the Webb telescope scientists found the universe is expanding 8% faster than previously thought. Confirming the Hubble’s previous data that they thought was incorrect. That’s what I got out of the article, idk. I was hoping you had a video explaining it for us.
Two things to add to what she said (Which was great and really informative.) First it may be viewable from anywhere...but only if you have clear skies those nights. (Depending on clouds or your area weather.) Secondly (And VERY COOL) is the fact that this is the ONLY major meteor showers not originating from a comet. We usually fly through the trail that a comet left.(A long debris trail or field.)

I wish Astro would pass through the sky I'd deffo stay up all night to watch that. She's absolutely stunning 😍 plus she'd probably be waving her arms around explaining the science behind why she's floating in the sky In the first place. 😂
I actually witnessed 1 with my sister while driving in Montgomery Al we originally thought shooting star 🌠 or something falling from the sky … it was 12/15 around 11:30 central time
This year (2024) the Geminids are peaking during a full moon(plus in my area it was totally overcast)...this makes a huge difference... The Persiads(in August) were great this year....We try to go every year...Back in 2012 we kept count with a "clicker"...we saw close to 800
there is the BIG caveat that this year it will be a full moon during the peak of the shower, and that pretty much ruins even the best meteor showers as you can only see the brightest meteors, and even then they look pretty dim compared to a shower with no moon (and I know this from experience)

I remember to go to this last year in a so much clear sky north Michigan, so cold, and a lot of people in the almost darkest night waiting for the “rain” of starts, after 3 long and cold hours where supposed to see the most amount of “starts” falling, we saw 3, just 3, everybody was so excited, but after 3 hours and just 3 starts falling with all your body totally cold, everyone was so disappointed, if really will be like this, well at least thousand of wonderful videos should exists and be there in the internet, but guess what, doesn’t exist, because all the starts are like one per hour, probably a high rate if you compare with the rest of the year, but nothing even close not even little close of the images behind this lady, not even even even even close. I tried twice and the same sh@t both, not giving a third chance for sure.
For any city lights people, wait till the darkest hours and look at castor and pollux (they can be seen from bortle 7 skies, speaking from experience) focus your eyes there, some might even reach a negative apparent magnitude (the smaller the number the better, castor and pollux have a positive magnitude for reference)also don't just take my word for it, do your research! Wishing you clear skies!
Curious what makes comets like this one release or leave behind debris? Like with no atmosphere in space what’s breaking chunks off the comet? Maybe centrifugal force and inertia from it spinning? Or is something else?
I got to watch a fireball enter our atmosphere tonight from Mobile, AL from the shower we had tonight!! I got a photo of it just after it entered the atmosphere (I think, based off the news story I read)
I saw it 5 of them from my balcony just now...❤ m lying on my bed facing sky n moon is behind now so good view. Sky was good for 30 mins now its cloudy again
Astro_Alexandra I would ask if you're available but know you would say "eww get away from me" 😅 Interesting clip, I'll be up since I work at night, got a great view here in the desert
Wait, I'm so confused by the "doesn't matter where you are, it starts around 9-10pm". Is it happening for like 24 hours straight but only at 9-10pm it's dark enough to see?!
I'm losing my mind. Every single time there's a special meteor shower like this the sky is the WORST.
Exactly! Godsdamned east coast weather makes England look like Aruba.
Fr. It’s supposed to rain on those exact dates and almost every other meteor shower has been cloudy 🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️
I won't be able to see this because there's far too much light pollution where I live.
