Yeah, because the original metal is pure gold and I doubt they'd make a ring out of that. It was probably diluted down to 14k or 10k.

Crazy how soft pure gold is, that ring would bend and lose shape so easily. Aside from being cheaper and stretching the gold further, that's why allot of jewelry is made out of 14k gold. Even 18k is quiet a bit harder then 24k.

As much as I love gold, I wouldn't want a 24k _anything_ really. At least nothing I would actually wear -- it's way too soft. 24k gets scuffed and dented just by looking at it funny, let alone normal use. That's why 18k is the standard for rings, watches, chains, etc.
Wearing 23k (96.5%) necklace, but i always make sure to pick one of the smallest of each size since my first necklace broke on the first day i had it. Now i wear 3 baht, but it looks like 1 baht. Never take it off, even while doing heavy lifting in the gym

Rings, watches and bracelets though; they either come in contact with everything you touch, or too much potential to be banged against walls, doorknobs, whatever. I'm not a jeweler but I am a watchmaker, and I fix dented, scratched gold watches all the time: The higher the purity the worse and more widespread the damage due to its softness. Unless high-karat or pure jewelry is made very thick and chunky too, it can easily bend or deform... A friend had his 23k wedding band deform just from a couple years of weightlifting, and it wasn't thin at all. Still the pressure of his grip around the bar caused the ring to eventually flatten out on one 'side'. The last thing you want is pure gold for anything on around your hands, but chains and earrings are usually ok.
Silver has the same problem of extreme softness, and that's why the standard for jewelry is Sterling (92%) instead of pure.

I think there are different alloys of gold around lately, and the quality seems, off sometimes, luckily I found out that certain plants, namely nitrogen fixing legumes, can use the nitrogen fixing bacteria in the roots to pull gold nanoparticles out of the soil and reconstitute them into larger pieces, purifying it in the process.
Just plant a bunch on a big, nutritious, phosphorous rich, dirt mound, and let it grow, after a couple years, mine the topsoil like you would normally, and you've got some pretty pure gold flakes to work with, like very white colored almost, not white gold, just indescribable... like sunlight. Very pure.
Then, plant the same plants back down again, and repeat.
For real? That is presposterous. I would rather compress charcoal with several thousands of pounds per square inch. But if i could actually grow gold that would be cool and amazing also. The last i knew it took cyanide to extract it from the rock it was contained in.

I'm a poor individual and my father many years ago had swelling in his hands and had to clip his wedding ring off. Unfortunately he lost it and never got another. Had I as a young man known of how simple it is to fix his ring I would have. I cried watching this. I can only hope befor he dies I can gift him a simple gold band like he had.

Pure gold is soft, but not THAT soft. It's not something to wear as a mechanic, but for non industrial occasions, you won't damage it.
