Thanks Luke, these are fantastic. I'm a 65 yr old bassist trying to teach myself fretless bass and these will help immensely. You do the bass community a great service, especially the youngsters.I would have loved and benefited loads if your lessons were available in the"olden days" 😂
Great instructional video. I have ended up learning Smooth operator & Stealing My Kisses all the way through, which were both great fun. Just about to start Aeroplane, which looks far more challenging. Still fun though. Thanks.
Nice lesson on solos! Do you have a video on improvising? I did not know that solo in Smooth Operator was a bass. When I first heard the song many yrs ago, I thought it was a guitar.
first bass solo i ever tried to learn was Geezer Butler's solo from the start of N.I.B. I still have not learned it. Instead I wrote my own loosely inspired by Cliff Burton's bass solo in Orion
@Michael McComb is right @karl gronbach - they're ghosted notes. I have a lesson all about them if you want to check it out: th-cam.com/video/UvkeY87QvDA/w-d-xo.html
me tryna play these in my hybrid E1 B2 G2 D3 G3 A#4, baritone guitar bass it's like learning a language that uses the same letters but has different grammar rules
I don't know if I'd use the word 'stolen' in this context. Was he influenced by funk players of the '70s. Absolutely! He probably absorbed a lot the musical language of those players and it comes out in his own playing. But did he 'steal' this solo note-for-note - I don't think so, but if you have a recording/link of a solo that someone else played, please share it with us. That'd be super interesting.
@@BecomeABassist oh man, coming up with a specific recording 45 years later would be tough. I have played that riff almost note for note this whole time. Flea added maybe two notes LOL and made it a little busier, something the funk players tried to avoid.
Naw….although, he kicks azz and I’m sure inspired (and continues to inspire) an insane amount of bass players. But, I’m all about SADE and her bassists with the always smooth, Jazz, Soul lines that I never get bored playing no matter my mood. Oh, and the ladies love to get close up when groovin’ something in a SADE World🎼🔥🤙🏾

I love the second solo. Can anyone help me counting it? I cant figure out how to play it to a beat. Is it a 4/4rythm?
Great video. Thanks for doing it!
Maybe try to break down the solo from , “Atomic?”
Don’t mind me but I might steal these to use in a solo part that’s meant to be improv or written 😅
Try Led Zeppelin- The Lemon Song..........that should be easy:)
That's not a solo...
I was laughin because the dog was passing from the camera and luke seems not disturbed hahahahaha
Luke: [plays bass]
Doggo: "I halp."
Honestly, I get the same here.
Arnie is always up in my business. Lol
Nice lesson on solos! Do you have a video on improvising? I did not know that solo in Smooth Operator was a bass. When I first heard the song many yrs ago, I thought it was a guitar.

Would love to see a jack Bruce inspired lesson
That's interesting @Chip Monk - what would you like to see in a lesson like that?
Just some of the fills he uses and where to use them
There’s a bass solo in a song called Metropolis where I do a bass solo.
first bass solo i ever tried to learn was Geezer Butler's solo from the start of N.I.B. I still have not learned it. Instead I wrote my own loosely inspired by Cliff Burton's bass solo in Orion

HI Luke, I am an 85 yr. old just learning notes on the bass. What does the X (third note on Hot Chile Peppers) mean?
I'm pretty sure this means missed note in the beat, somebody correct me if I'm wrong!
Oh sorry I just rechecked that...it a quick ghosted note
@Michael McComb is right @karl gronbach - they're ghosted notes. I have a lesson all about them if you want to check it out: th-cam.com/video/UvkeY87QvDA/w-d-xo.html
Damn bass is hard. I can't even play these very slowly without strings buzzing like crazy, and I've played guitar for years lol
Hi. I’m a deaf bassist and I’m trying to improvise an uptempo bass solo in D minor. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
Wow! Good luck. How is progress so far?
me tryna play these in my hybrid E1 B2 G2 D3 G3 A#4, baritone guitar bass

That Flea bass solo was stolen by him from funk players in the '70's. It was a common funk bass line I learned in 1977.

Well if you think of the recording, I’d love to hear it.
I wish you were my teacher

No one:
Him: Ghost it note
Me: wtf Post it note
Headaches for beginners guaranteed. ;-)
When I clicked to get the Tabs, I only got the tab for the RHCP song and not Sade or Ben Harper.
Hey Allan! You may need to scroll down - it's all in the one PDF.
Pls slow down
banana bass
This is a good video, but you need to find a way to reduce the mouth noises when your speaking. There are a lot of smacking wet noises in this video.
That's interesting. Do you notice it in any of my other videos? Or is it just this one?
