    In order to have a 'sharp' knee on a clipper, you have to have high frequencies, and therefore, aliasing. Removing the aliasing is practically equivalent to low pass filtering, which would make the knee of the clipper rounder. It's like different ways of arriving at the same conclusion. So yeah, if you have a clipper than allows for a sharp knee with oversampling, you are going to have some aliasing.

    If it hasn't already been done, the sidechain technique that uses the ring modulator would be interesting as a topic.
    In order to perfectly "fit" two tracks together at waveform level and be able to gain more loudness.
    We know than in certain musical genres it is required by market standards.
    If you are interested, there is a video on the "Reaperiani" channel.

    Is an interesting starting point, but it needs more flexibility; 1 linear band natural phase for the crossovers. 2 oversampling. 3 the possibility to shape the clipper curves indipendetly in the single bands and in the single clipping. If I see that coming I will buy it. Untill that comes I'll stick with my standard clip and the multiband clipper in the TDR Limiter 6 GE that Strip is really cool to put on groups.

    I think they add anti derivative anti aliiasing to their clipper (having done that in my plug, but it tends to filter too much, but avoid distorsion = filtering whatever). For sure they use linkwitz-riley filters to have 0 latency band splitting, beware when you full dry in kraftur the linkwitz-riley filters remains (cumulated with other filters for oversampling or anti aliasing in general) which involve a lot of phases shift (have a look in plugindoctor). Otherwise not sur there is a lot of multiband waveshapper/clipper on the market.

    Here's another way at looknig at it. Square waves are a sine wave with infinate harmonics. If you have a band width limet, you can't have a true squre wave because at some point the harmonics are reflected back. You can get very close, especially at low fequency as the harmonics will trail off into the noise at some point, but when clipping you are making something similar to a square topped wave, which will have a LOT of harmonics that will for sure go over nyquist at some point if clipping a full bandwidth signal. This will cause ripple, as the more harmonics that are removed, the less flat the top becomes, which OFC is exactly what you are describing here. ;)
    [EDIT, you did get a little into this late on in the vid]
    A really good way to get your head around this is by playing with a wavetable like synth that lets you build waves from adding or removing harmonics ... It's how I figured out how to make my perfect D+B bass tone, by manipulating harmincs to make a flat topped wave with round corners so it sounds smooth, but can go really loud and packs a punch heh .. but that's another topic.

  • @Naskoedm
    @Naskoedm หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    the multiband shift controls lower the clipping threshold + increases input gainfor that band without being able to control both seperately 🫠This thing uses a LOT of cpu for being a simple 3 band clipper. I suspect they render on the CPU and those FFT spectrum analyzers come at a cost too. Seems like closing the plugin window also doesn't "sleep" those spectrum analyzers so you're stuck with that high cpu usage. Oh, and the plugin doesn't autosleep 🫠
    Besides autogain, i feel a good standard for any professional new plugin should be autosleep when possible, sleeping GUI or one that runs with gpu accel & reasonable cpu usage comparison when the window is closed vs opened!

    Within Kraftur You design your sound while having match on to eliminate misconceptions of what you are actually changing. However, to hear final result your drive, offset and frequency parameters match mode must be deselected. Also, the frequency bands can be adjusted up top and there is a clipper on the output.
    You can get smooth saturation, clipping and limiting out of this plug in. It’s a very nice touch on the L/R, very clean if used right or dirty if you want it.

    I'm surprised some people don't like this or say it sounds bad. I can only say that as a guitar and synth enthusiast it seems good as an experimental tool that leads one in a different direction than some of the related tools. For example Saturn 2, Compressors that change character, clippers, etc. I'm wondering if they include some upward and downward compression along with clipping. Also, I wonder if anyone has tried it with Metaplugin to reduce the aliasing that people comment on. Phase changes are not so much my problem when I spend a lot of time working with buses rather than a full recorded band session that present phasing challenges. So I basically love it and feel like it's price is excellent for value. In terms of Saturn, one distinction I would point out is that one is choosing one of it's built in algorithms. Whereas with this I would say it starts at a place that's more subtle than the most subtle of those algos, in terms of alteration of harmonics - and I like this because that's my entry point when working.

  • @mudsh4rk
    @mudsh4rk 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I can't say for sure but I'm pretty confident that the antialiasing filter starting to cut off a little at the top of the audible range is why I pretty consistently prefer the sound of ADCs running at 48kHz to higher sample rates. If I was doing a naturalistic recording of acoustic instruments I'd probably use 96k but otherwise it's just a waste of space and CPU for me - before I switched back to 48k I found myself lowpassing almost every track in almost every mix up around 22k-30k, and this was consistent across three different rooms, four different interfaces and two sets of monitors (not counting headphones).

    Finally! About anti-aliasing in AD converters! 👍

  • @DaftyBoi412
    @DaftyBoi412 หลายเดือนก่อน

    As far as I understand it with aliasing, is you can get away with a certain amount before it's audiable. Even some OS will leave in some aliasing, but it removes just enough not to effect the sound too much in a negative way, and at the same time doesn't have the harsher filter settings so doesn't damage the sound in that regards either ... so sort of gets the best of both worlds and is balenced somewhere in the middle.
    However with these things that leave it in a bit, it might sound good on it's own, but when you start adding a bunch more from other sources .. can add up and really get out of hand by the end of a project if not carefully managed (for example try using this on every channel of a mix, and then see if you can hear any aliasing ... ;)).

    A lot in this problem depends on the sampling frequency, the processing algorithm and especially on the type of multiplication in this algorithm. The most commonly used algorithm is the Vinograd algorithm, which requires only 1.3 multiplications per sample. This algorithm is very fast but not very accurate. In the era of fast processors, this algorithm is being abandoned in favor of more accurate processing. The choice of the averaging window is also important, of which there are many: Hamming, Hanning, rectangular, Gauss, Barlett, Blackman, Kaiser, Nuttall and others. Depending on what we want to achieve, we use the appropriate window. There are already algorithms in some plugins that automatically eliminate this phenomenon, using the above mathematics in calculations.

    Just a reality check here - I'm in the somewhat older age group, and my hearing is proportionately worse, from all the years listening to loud music, added to the natural reduction in hearing that occurs with age. So all you young guns with bat-like hearing up to 20KHz may be able to hear something happening with this, but I couldn't hear a bloody thing. Nothing. Zero. Zip.. Zilch...!
    Mind you - my little Bose computer speakers probably don't help, as they act as bandpass filters, cutting off everything below about 200Hz at the low end, and anything above about 5KHz at the top end. But just to make the point - the average music listener has hammered their hearing capability over many years, listening to ear pods or headphones, at high volumes, or in clubs with massive sound systems at 120dB or higher volumes. So to the majority of punters out there who would be listening to something as subtle as this plugin - I seriously doubt they would actually hear any effect from it whatsoever.

If you don't want to demo it yourself, I recommend MixbusTV's video as he spends a bit more time gradually showing the changes. It's night and day depending on what you want.

      @@cachelesssociety5187 Heheh - 12-14KHz? I have a brick wall audiogram at 2.2KHz. Absolutely normal up to there, then from 2.3KHz up it's -120dB. So I rely on visuals to tell me what's happening anywhere above 2.2KHz. My mixes all seem to turn out OK, according to my 29yr old nephew who has bat-like hearing, as I go to great lengths to ensure I'm not compensating for my hearing deficit.

    man, just give opinion...good or not good.
    I crave of the old times, when unprofessional unsponsored youtubers gave out their honest opinions

    The plugin has too much color. And I hate 99 percent of plugin visualizations including this one.
