- Welcome to a new series we are doing! “This or That” where we will compare 2 samples and choose our favorite!
On todays episode, we are comparing Michter’s Barrel Strength Toasted Barrel Finish Rye Whiskey, Batch 23C 108 Proof with the Penelope Rio Bourbon Whiskey finished in honey and amburana barrels, Batch 24-901 98 Proof.
This was so fun to do, and a huge thank you to Dave Vogelsang for sending us these awesome samples!

Some channels use black Glencairns or colored (red, green, gold) Glencairns so that you can't see the color of the whiskey in blinds. (Myself, I always use dark-colored tasting glasses when doing my own blinds.)
As far as *amburana* , seems a lot of folks never liked it to begin with or have gotten sick of it.

Glad you liked them! Rio reminds me of Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal. Very sweet with the honey. I have several other Amburana finished bourbons that are fun to compare. I usually save the Rio for a last pour of the evening. Once you drink something with Amburana, it is hard to follow with regular bourbons and taste the flavor notes at the same sitting. 🥃

I haven’t had an Amburana that I love, but I’ve avoided trying the Rio because everyone raves about it and I don’t want to be let down 😂
Haha, it’s definitely something you’d either love or hate I feel like. It’s good, but I couldn’t have it all the time. Definitely a good “once in a while” pour! What amburanas have you had? Let us know if you ever try it! Cheers!🥃
