Kat found Bonnie in her garden when she was a baby squirrel. When she brought her into her home and raised her, Bonnie became very close with her dogs as well as started building nests in the house. Once Bonnie was let back out, she naturally started building nests outside with cotton from Kat’s house. Kat visits Bonnie everyday and they have such a strong bond. Bonnie inspired Kat to learn more about squirrels and help protect the environment.

Who knew squirrels could be such fun housemates? Ever had an unconventional pet bond? Tell us about it!

    • @Mike1984-lc9rh
      @Mike1984-lc9rh 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

Be careful to give people the impression that Eastern Grey squirrels are fun or good housemates. Most of them want to get out at some point, often in the 2nd year. When they can't get out of the house, they will start chewing on drywall and doors, and they may become semi aggressive with the owners when mating season kicks in. They also often only bond with one person, seeing other family members as intruders. In some cased they will bite any other person coming close.
They are very messy. While some can be trained to pee in a container inside the cage, many will mark areas in the house. The poop will be dropped everywhere. They will run away with food and eat it up high on furniture. If this happens to be a fruit or veggie, half of that will land in areas that are hard to reach and clean up.
They will stash food throughout the house. If this happens to be a piece of avocado or a berry, you will end up with stains in clothes and carpets.
Their teeth constantly grow and they have to grind them down. They will use your furniture, walls, doors, wires and plastic items to do so. By the time you hear the chewing, its too late and there will be damage. They have the highest relative biting force of all animals, sitting at 7000 PSI. Over the years there will be many things damaged inside your house and you won't be able to keep up with repairs or buying new items.
You can't change their instincts since these guys are not domesticated. YOU will have to change and accept the consequences of keeping a squirrel in your house.
Their claws are extremely sharp. When they run over your arms, legs, hands and face, you will end up with daily scratches. Some of them will go through all layers of your skin. You will deal with a burning sensation every time you wash your hands oo take a shower. Most owners will start wearing long-sleeve pants and shirts, even gloves, to protect their skin.
Most squirrels don't like being handled, petted, let alone being cuddled. What you see in these videos is the exception, not the rule.
Squirrels do make "bad" pets. As a matter of facts, you will become their pet because they see you as their food source and your house becomes their territory. Most folks give up after a year and try to force a release on the squirrel.
If you want a squirrel, you better don't care about your belongs, or your skin, and live solo. Only few people can compromise on this level.
I have been rehabbing Eastern Grey squirrels for decades.

Kat did a great job raising Bonnie. Bonnie has even had babies after her release. But she still comes back for a snack and to visit Kat and her doggie friends. This is a lovely true story.

Squirrels have adopted me a few times. They were adults. They lived outside. Squirrel Angel would come running down the street to me. People asked a few times if l trained her to do that. I said, no. She would accept peanuts sometimes. Sometimes she was just saying hi.
So l understand that this little sweetie comes back. She is visiting her family. Letting you know she's okay.

I love squirrels! I've got several that live in my yard that I feed by hand but there is one that I've been working with way longer than the others and we have an amazing bond. She will let me rub her back and she will hop on my leg and sit with me for coffee in the morning while she eats her natural peanut butter. She doesn't mind my dogs either but when a wild cat or neighbor's dog comes into the yard she immediately knows they aren't one of her buddies and starts her warning calls and tail whirls. She also doesn't eat from anyone's hand but mine. It's amazing how well they can distinguish people and other animals.

Lovely, subtle build up to a real trust. Agree that it must be so interesting watching the dogs and squirrel interact, and mutual benefits (for them) in doing so. LOVE watching Bonnie get brushed with a toothbrush, and her splayed, trusting body as she lays on her belly enjoying it. Think Kat has a terrific, intelligent spirit. Thanks for the share.

Found my rescue at 1 week old, tornadoes in our area, dog brought her home. No fur, hypothermic and I used my ps5 to keep her warm the 1st night until we could buy a heating pad etc. That feeding schedule was brutal; hubby and I, AND OUR EMPLOYERS, scheduled us for feeding schedule. Now 10 weeks later she's a healthy, crazy shitass who just chewed the top of her water bottle off!

My stepmom had a goffin's cockatoo that did something similar. He trained my parent's dogs to come sit with a particular whistle and would drop a piece to each of them. It was hilarious. The dogs passed from old age after a long and very pampered and happy life, and the cockatoo went to a sanctuary after my stepmom had a stroke. He has his own spot with a girlfriend.

We don't have them here in our country, but I'm always fascinated to see these videos from other places showing just how much intelligence, affection and adaptation the various squirrel sub-species (and raccoons too!!) seem to be capable of?
