    I love that Nirav confirmed the company's vision is to fix the consumer electronics as a whole which means given enough time and funding, we might even see tablets, 2-in-1's, and possibly a phone. Can't wait for these guys to take on those challenges.

    Hey Josh, I reallly appreciate you covering a bit more right-to-repair and enthusiast-favored companies like Framework laptop even though a big focus for this channel is to give general recommendations for regular users. I love Nirav not because of the fact that we share the same last name, but he's creating something really innovative and solving a huge problem for covering sustainability in the tech space.

    The idea 💡 of "planned obsolescence" had saturated most businesses, especially tech, unfortunately. I used to work in telecommunications, and it drove me up the wall with the "embedded batteries" and other issues like it become the "norm" for devices now.

    • @WhenDoesTheVideoActuallyStart
      @WhenDoesTheVideoActuallyStart 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I hate the tendency of putting batteries in everything, and then making everything unrepairable. That literally determines how long something will last, which has implications on the engineering of the other parts too (E.g. companies can use flimsy, cheap materials and cheap, low-quality electronics)

      @Prince Cooper And if CEO's are Elon Musk, they'll waste millions making themselves look cool with useless technobabbles, like reinventing a much worse version of the metro, train and/or bus.

    Excellent interview Josh, I would love to see more content like this in the future, you could also ask the tough questions to laptop manufacturers, if they made an excellent laptop but used single channel RAM that you called out, you can talk to the team and understand why they chose the decisions that they did.
    , but please use engineers involved in the creating of the products or founders etc, instead of marketing executives who will give a bunch of fluff answers, as much as possible.

    If he is able to have a numpad for the laptop, maybe i could give a go. My job requires me to push numbers most of the time and having a numpad really saves time. However numpads usually exist at 15 inch and higher laptop and desktop computers and while getting a separate numpad component can be a hassle at times as well. So looking forward for them to cater to these type of users as well.

As someone for whom the fight against planned obsolesce has become a lifestyle (I have many devices and keep them for decades, not years), I am very interested in this concept, but I am also allergic to any kind of fan noise and have been buying only silent devices recently. Hope they can improve the design so that fan noise become almost an non existent problem.

  • @hassaanalansary
    @hassaanalansary 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great interview!!
    The big missing question that was not asked, is what made the other modular systems fail.
    It is the support.
    Obviously they have built some protocols to facilitate modularity.
    However these protocols wilp go out of date after some time, how long are they gonna support the current protocols.
    This will not be a modular computer, if they deprecate all the current interfaces when they launch the next version in the next couple years.
    It is not an easy task to support out of date hardware, that you no longer produce, specially for a very small, brand new company wity no record.
    Just for clarification, if I want to replace the screen in 2 years with a better one. Will they still support the current connection, wiring, aspect ratio, etc..

    • @SciFiFactory
      @SciFiFactory 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question!
      My guess/hope would be that they were aware of this issue and that very high on the priority list was to find a good chassis and set of interfaces and fix it in place for years to come. They can now update the laptop components independently every year. An AMD CPU and motherboard next year and maybe a 4k screen after that? It is so obvious, they must have thought of those possibilities and planned for them.
      If something breaks, you don't need the exact original part, if the updated part fits as well.
      Sure, they can't use the same interfaces forever, so the will have to update them at some point.
      But for example: I have my laptop for 7 years now. I like it, but the CPU (14nm dualcore) is showing its age. Let's say that was a framework laptop and they stopped using this specific chassis and and connector-set last year. I would happily buy last years CPU and use the laptop for 7 years again.
      That is already a lot better than other manufacturers.
      But also, in all those years where they supported the first model they created a market for new modules and replacement components.
      I can get my exact laptop model fairly cheap on the used market if I need replacement parts, despite this model being only sold for a year or less.
      For every year in that they don't break compatibility, they also add a second year of life even after they stop supporting the device, because they created a healthy used market for it.
      But it is not only the used market. Look at the automotive industry. My dad owns a car that is almost 30years old. The manufacturer doesn't care anymore but other small companies bought the tooling and still produce replacement parts to this day. Sure, they are a little bit more expensive because they can't scale to the same high numbers, but as long as there is demand for it they will continue to fill this market niche.
      I guess the number of compatible devices needs to be above a certain threshold for this to work. But a couple generations of intercompatible laptops should do. I believe this is their plan. Or at least this is how I make sense of it.
      I hope they can solve these problems so that it will be possible get replacement screens for the next 15 or 20+ years.

    • @hassaanalansary
      @hassaanalansary 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SciFiFactory i hope that your assumptions are correct and they have a plan for all this.
      Because the complexity will grow exponentialy when they introduce new chassis, or they find a defect in the current design that needs hot fixing.
      I think it would be far better if they can give a timeline for the lifecycle of the products and the support for them.
      We always assume as consumers, that they take this into their considerations, however in reality we saw big companies like samsung, dell, lenovo abandon their product after a year or 2 specially on their low mid-tier level
      Getting software updates for a couple of years after the purchase date was vary rare in android phones couple years ago, until google and samsung started of giving 2 years of updates and an extra year of security patches.
      And even in samsung case, this only cover tha handful of premium handsets.
      Most of their cheapers phone dont get any update at all.
      So if they just give a promise that this current design will be supported for X number of years, this will give the consumers more confidence buying this product

    Better to creat a workstation laptop or gaming laptop with powerfull GPU and CPU. The GPU must be upgradable. Without changing the motherboard. In a workstation, GPU is the one who become outdated by 3 years and processor may last 5 years . The rest is the same .And also battery should be of separate package ,so if one fails better to replace that only. Dongle size should be small and save space ,so they you can have to add multiple SSDs and large battery .And also wanted thunderbolt port in future .Going full AMD can reduce cost and also improve battery above 35% .

      @@JustJoshTech It is very interesting, and I'm honestly curious regarding the business side of it! So many have failed to achieve what Framework is doing correctly; being modular and practical.

    Your hmms and ahhs are a little distracting at times. Maybe mute yourself or implement some sort of audio attenuation. Other than that, great work!

    No specific questions for gaming products or modulations? He couldn't share much at all about the roadmap... So maybe you assumed it would be a wasted question? Only reason I haven't pulled the trigger on this laptop is because it doesn't have a dedicated graphics card.

    Replaceble/upgradeable laptops will never work with the way the computing industry is heading.
    To get the best performance, you need more and more silicon integrated into the SoC to get the latency, and power consumption under control.
    It’s simple physics people.
    What are you gonna do? Replace the SoC? 😂
    This project is DOA …
    Funny how techies are supposed to be the most progressive and open minded folks but when it comes to PCs … they can’t seem to get way from motherboards, upgradable cpu, Ram, gpu, ports …. Concepts from the 1970s … over 50yrs ago.
