You know how millions of other videos say "study at the same place in the same time, so your brain knows it has to work"? I knew it that how you study depends a lot on you as a person. Everyone needs to find their own hacks.
I LOVE how your video was short and to the point. No long asf intros, no long explaination for every single thing, unnecessary amount of bubbly excitement and just precise tips that I actually find quite useful. Instant sub~
studying is definitely a chore, but if you go for internships or some short exposure stints at hospitals, you will soon realize that peoples lives are actually in your hands - its a realization/concept hard to grasp until you are actually faced with it. that motivated me to study even once i started working even more, and made me realize how dumb it was to think of studying in med school as a "chore". its a responsibility and its not a choice
but seeing those "biochemical research enthusiast" kids literally orgasming on whatever the fuck biomolecule epimeric reconfiguration does a biochemical intermediate undergo etc. makes me feel bad. i cant help feeling it's immoral to see studying as a chore when i compare myself to those kids who cant shut up about the laboratory externship they participated last summer. i think i'm too lost in pre-clinics i hope i feel better when i finally get into clinicals too.
@@ahmetkerematakur4247 maybe its great path for them to pursue and they actually enjoy learning about this stuff by contast to you. But I dont wanna judge you, you better know whats better for you and whats not, but if you aren't sure you can always drop out of college and do something else, life is too short i think
1. Safe place to fail (you're not gonna die); 2. Measure progress (lecture turned to questions); 3. Switch places up; 4. Set goals and create plans - be in control.
How to apply this in school: 1. Relax, in games there’s no punishment in taking risks and in school the worst that could happen is you taking a test again. 2. Time yourself, in games there’s a goal it’s getting to the end and in school the goal is to get good grades so time yourself how long it takes to get all the problems right. 3. Sit in different positions, in games there’s always a different challenge that makes it fun and in school you can’t really do a lot to change that but you can sit in different positions while doing your work so it feels fresh 4. Set goals, in games there’s a goal it’s to get to the end and beat the level and in school the goal is to get good grades, get smarter, and feel good in your grades and a good grade is different for everyone so it’s important to set goals so you feel like you accomplish something.
Tracking progress is honestly a life saver. I'm a very impatient person, so impatient in fact, that I am graduating college in three years. Every week I make a to-do list on a sticky note above my desk, I cross things out as I do them, I also write the week number at the top of the list. Every week I get closer to the end of the semester and visualizing that helps. Even more helpful though, I bookmarked my degree requirements in my browser, and named it after my degree with a percentage. This is how close I am to done with my degree. Right now, it says Geography 93.56%, because I am in my 10th week of my final semester of college. I remember the days where it was in the single digits, and am so glad they are way behind me.
The value of your first tip is actually incredible. It seems counter intuitive to take pressure off yourself for something that may be really important in your life, but honestly that's when most people perform at their best.
The spread sheet method was the thing i needed the most, damn this is a game changer. I don't why i never thought of it to track my progress, even though i use Notion on a daily basis for other things. Thanks for the awesome video
this is so smart!! I came up with a kinda similar idea - I always had an issue with remembering stuff, but there were things like song lyrics that somehow stuck with me after only listening to them a couple times so what I did was turning whatever I had to learn into a song lol. Whether it was a new one or just matching the words to an existing melody it definitely helped a lot, but could be more tricky with biiiig loads of material to study
Thank you so much for this! I'm struggling with mental health issues (dep, adhd) so i never actually study. Another factor is just because even when I don't study, I still pass the exams, or get the highest scores. However, I can't enter med school with that mentality, so I'm definitely going to keep these tips in mind!
Procrastinting studying by watching this video lol... I'm still in undergrad, but I was so pumped to see that you study the exact same way that I do! I literally have Notion open in a different tab with questions I made for myself for my neurobio class. The toggle feature has been a lifesaver for me. Whenever I have free time and have nothing to do, I pull up my notion and quiz myself to see how many I can answer. Gotta get that dopamine hit lmao
damn bro!! I would love to appreciate that you made this topic so good to understand and yet it was very crisp and short at the same time. Much love ❤❤❤
Super interesting video! I'm taking a game developement class and I wanted to share something I've learned. There's an idea in game developement called the "flow state". The flow state can be visualized as a graph, with player skill as one axis and game difficulty as the other axis. A balance needs to be found between the player's skill and the game's difficulty. If this balance is maintained, the player remains in the flow state. If this balance is not maintained, the player will feel boredom (high skill + low challenge) or anxiety/frustration (low skill + high challenge), and the flow state will be interrupted. Fun video games are optimized to keep you in a flow state. I think that the points that you talked about were super spot-on. In addition to those points, I think that studying is not as fun as a video game because a flow state is not maintained! Personally, I find studying enjoyable if there is a good balance between my knowledge/skill and the content difficulty. As soon as that is not the case, I no longer want to study. If the content is too easy (aka high skill + low challenge), I feel bored. If the content is too difficult (aka low skill + high challenge), I feel stressed. So yeah, super long comment but I thought that people might find this interesting! I'm new to the game dev world so if anyone else has things to add I would love to hear it :)
I used to measure progress with Excel when I was learning glossary for English as a kid. :D It was a great way to quickly test out if you knew the words or not and if you could spell them right. I can't believe I never used it or any similar system later in life.
Thank you for your video Tom, you changed my view on how I look at stuyding! I have thought about this a lot, the situation where you can do one activity for hours, but not when it comes to studying. I will apply this to my new mindset while studying.
I am hoping to go to medical school and I am learning to study after not needing to in high school. Really enjoy this content and please keep it up. Short and to the point with amazing advice.
I'm glad the algorithm put this video in my feed. I've been falling off my coding game recently so I'm thankful you motivated me to get back on the train
I really like how creative you are in creating simple steps that can trick the subconscious mind and make it feel for example like if its really in control of everything
I was feeling very stressed due to the extreme study pressure put on students from our society(I probably don’t live in same county with you), i was even thinking studying is meaningless… your video helped me to clear my mind! Thank you for such a motivational video!
im currently a first year undergrad trying to find what studying methods work best for me. this video is very straightforward and that only makes it much easier to love and follow. i definitely will give this a try! great video ~

I haven't watched more than the introduction yet but i have to say, right off the bat, this is one of the most brilliant questions i have heard in a while. Why is it that I look forward to playing chess or extremely hard puzzle games but despise studying? They all require intense concentration and all leave me feeling mentally tired after.
I'm having a rough time studying for my tests, and your point of view made me think a lot about how i approach college. Thanks! I'll try tu use your notion template
i am aiming for medical school and this video is very motivating to me!!!! also i love your background music its kinda like a throwback to older youtube.
I'll try to remind myself of the first tip more often. That's actually one of the biggest hinderances in my growth. I just find it super hard to accept failure or even the possibility of failure. It feels like life and death for me as a result of which I often come under extreme pressure amd stress and hence not able to work to my full potential. I'm trying really hard to remind myself everyday that it is okay to fail and that doesn't mean I'll fall behind. Not doing so well with that reaffirmation atm but I'm trying.
Great Video! Gonna try this with my master thesis 😊 Edit: I actually really like sitting in my bright room, but maybe switching it uo to starbucks on sundays isn't that bad of an idea, to motivate me 😊 Edit 2, haha: I really like, that you kept the video short. Some people with this content stretch this way too much 🙄🙄
