Monster Hunter is an action role-playing video game developed and published by Capcom for the PlayStation 2. The first installment of the Monster Hunter series, it was originally released in Japan in March 2004, in North America in September 2004 and in Europe in May 2005. It was remade and expanded in Monster Hunter G, which was released in Japan for the PlayStation 2 (later ported to the Wii) and was brought to North America and Europe as Monster Hunter Freedom for the PlayStation Portable.
Much of the game can be played offline through single-player. The majority of the content is in the online section of the game. Only some monsters are found in single-player and the player's rewards are smaller (and less valuable) when they are offline. The goal for players online is not to defeat the most monsters but to reach the highest hunter rank, which is the storyline that is carried out online by non-player characters.
Monster Hunter Wilds is an upcoming action role-playing video game developed and published by Capcom. A successor to Monster Hunter: World (2018), the game is set to be released for Windows PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and Series S on February 28, 2025.
Similar to its predecessor, Wilds is an action role-playing video game played from a third-person perspective. In Wilds, players take the role of a custom Hunter character who travels to the "Forbidden Lands", an unpopulated landmass filled with monsters, in order to locate a missing expedition party. As with previous games in the series, the player's Hunter tracks and fights monsters, either capturing or slaying them, from which they gain rewards in the form of monster parts and other resources. Along with other resources collected in the game world, the player can then craft new armour, weapons, consumables, and other gear which allow them to fight more difficult monsters.
The game world features several biomes, each of which is a large open world for players to freely explore. In Wilds, players can seamlessly move between the larger world and their hunter village where they can cook food, replenish their supplies, and craft new gear. Quests can also be started whenever players locate their targets in the wilds. The game introduces a type of mount named Seikret which aids player exploration and directs them towards their current objective, and can also be ridden while in combat. The Seikret allows the player character to carry two distinct weapons while hunting monsters, though armour can only be changed in the village.

12:00 egg quests are special, once you pick up the E G G everything changes.
this initial one even more so as they block the easy route through the backdoor of the FNH.
nearly everything you kill going the backdoor route, will not respawn (AFTER picking up e g g)

wow, the first game looks so good, especially the environment. I dare say it looks better than a lot of later installments.
For the time and the technology. The game did look good. Especially when looking at the view.
I absolutely love the first one! I'm not even kidding, I've spent like 400 hours in Monster Hunter G and I would go back to it even after playing World, Rise and even after I play Wilds.
Respect! Best I'd go back to is likely Freedom Unite......Which I will at some point xD
I have a savefile of MH1 that is just after you kill Rathalos in the main story and I keep multiple copies on different hard drives and USBs, cause there's no way I'm doing all that again whenever I'm in the mood for MH1
I sadly lost my memory card years ago. However, the good thing is the reenacted memories are now recorded in video format (this video) 😁😁

I give up monster hunter 1 when i reach quest to delivery explosive stone form top of the volcano mountain to the camp, as if bullfango is not bad enough they even put gravios in there
(Years later i found that it's one of the 3 final quest from mh 1 and no other quest after this, man i hate delivery quest) 😢
I am so glad I didn't carry on back then. Freedom 1 really improved a lot of things from MH1 (and MH1G)
There is no longsword it's simply that some great sword designs were reused for the longsword in gen 2 and also there is very much a light and heavy bowgun they are two separate weapons that play differently
Played this game back in 2004. Loved it. Didn’t have internet so I could only do the offline missions and it wasn’t till monster hunter freedom 2 on the psp that we could hunt the “online” missions solo offline. I have easily put 5000 hours into this series and my wife and me each have already purchased monster hunter wilds and set up child care and scheduled vacation days to be able to play the game the 28th-4th without any interruptions lol.
YO! HAHAHAHAHA! Thats some commitment right there and I can totally understand! XD. Much respect for going through the generations of MH gameplay with your wife! I'd say at best, I'd likely have about 2-3k hours in total as I've only played 1, F, F2, FU, P3rd, World and Rise. As I was not able to afford to play the Nintendo MH games during its times. I do hope to give 3U, 4U and GU a try.
Right now, I've just been chilling in World + Rise (haven't touched Anomaly Endgame. Saving that for after Wilds :D ) and maybe Frontier sometimes.
Im a ps2 MH veteran, from that Game y jumped to rise (never played any other in between) rise is a child play from what it felt to hunt 90 rathalos, 60 basarios, 40 diablos for a whole set of their armor each(not counting the 900 runs for minerals)..... Up until this day ive only touched 5 egg (and one single gunpowder) quests, those were nightmare dogSShitt... But i was able to clear everything with blood, tears and a lot of testosterone. A fun game that pushed my nerves to its limit

I agree that it is clunky. This is why the best I'd suggest for new hunters to try out an older game would be the Gen 3 games.

After you pick up an egg if you drop it and then go kill the monsters they won't respawn in the forest and most won't respawn inside desert
I never tried that, maybe I'll test it in another old title :D
God i remember playing this when i was younger. Never really got far. But had so muchfun gathering and stuff. But man i sucked at hubting the big bois. But it did kick off ny love for the series.
The controls are to a degree a limiting factor. I've been complaining about how my left index finger is aching while playing this during stream 🤣

Great video, I just don't agree with the last point entirely.
Personally, I think all the old games have merits. Although if someone wanted to play Gen 1 MH I'd tell them to play Freedom 1.
But ultimately, FU is the zenith of old school MH.
I understand where you're coming from. I'd only suggest at earliest 3u as thats where most things are more established in terms of the basic mechanics. Anything before that would be for specific people only XD And even then I'd suggest Freedom Unite. However, for the majority of gamers? I'd suggest sticking to the newer games. Expecially if they come from Iceborne (Not Base World) and Rise + Sunbreak.
It's all great and fun (pain) until the trouble quest I thought that thing was the most impossible thing in the world and as a 7 yo at that time it was. it wouldn't until I get to highschool I revisit MH and finish it, and it was still hard even though by that time I'm actually already played up to unite and dual monster hunt were not uncommon but troublesome pair is still hard in MH for me.
Also yes the controller is not just it's not just clunky it straight up bad for most weaponsespecially S n S and hammer.... Because charging with analog stick so weird leaving only GS as best weapons to use using this control because it's so easy to combo kt was just spam swipe and overhead. Other weapons were just bad in comparison imo, the analog Also the most commonly part that PS2 stick has problems with.
Hammer is pretty easy imo. As all you do is hold R2 and let go 🤣
Another thing I'd add. Respect for going back to beat it. Like I said, I stopped after Rathalos at 9-years-old. Another reason would be because Freedom 1 came out. And it was such a breeze having to press buttons to attack. The raptor hand position still sucked but it was way better than PS2 MH controls.
