- The opening titles to Spider-Man 3 always bugged me. Danny Elfman left the series after Spider-Man 2 and so Christopher Young took up composing duties. While he kept most of Elfman's motifs (including the opening theme), the score in general was - in my opinion - not to the standard of Elfman's prior two efforts. This was most evident in the opening credits, which always felt cobbled together and rushed to me. The fact that over half of the runtime is devoted to a medley of Young's villain motifs really drove home the film's infamous 'villain overload' right from the first few minutes. What's more, it included them at the expense of things like the concluding 'Responsibility Theme' and other instantly recognisable theme motifs.
I decided to make an edit of the titles that was more faithful to those in the previous two films - and found that the visuals synced perfectly. This makes me think that these titles were originally edited around the Spider-Man 1 theme, and the music was then later changed to one that didn't work nearly as well. Some particularly great sync points between the music and visuals can be found at 1:06, 1:20, 1:29, 1:43, 1:49, 1:55, 1:58, 2:03, 2:32, 2:43, 2:49, and 3:01. There are certainly enough of them that I'm sure that it isn't coincidental!
In-depth Edit Analysis
I stripped the whole theme back to basics. For the most part, I used the original Spider-Man 3 theme. I've totally removed the villain motif medley and replaced it with the corresponding section from the first film's score (between around 1:20 and 1:44). I used a totally orchestral version, in keeping with the style of Spider-Man 3 - while Elfman's two themes used heavy electronic elements, Young's uses them only sparingly.
The more spartan Spider-Man 3 theme has been beefed up with orchestral and choral elements borrowed from the themes of the first two movies, to give it more of an Elfman-esque feel. This is particularly noticeable (in comparison to the original Spider-Man 3 theme) at 0:52-0:55, 1:13-1:20, and 2:20-2:32, among others.
Added the more familiar Spider-Man theme between 1:48 and 2:32 that was largely replaced by the villain motif. Spider-Man 3 score elements from this are from the unreleased score.
Added the signature deep electronic note as the first web appears at 0:31. This was a very familiar part of the first two film's openings, and removed for the third.
Added an element from Christopher Young's score 'Saving Gwen' at 1:43-1:48. This variation of the title theme wasn't used in the final film.
Added the 'Responsibility Theme' to the ending beginning at 2:34. This is an edit of the one found in Spider-Man 1 and 2, and again purely orchestral.
Cleaned up and edited the visuals. I've boosted the colours and saturation in parts, as I felt that the original Spider-Man 3 visuals looked a little washed-out in comparison to the two colourful intros that had come before. I think this is now the highest quality upload currently available on TH-cam, in full 1080p.

This movie was the eye opening. The problem with the film was that it was directed by Sony, not Sam Rami. He had different goal for the film and it can be show with how he treated Venom.

What a great remake. This actually inspires me for a fan-edit of Spider-Man 3 that combines the Editor's Cut and the Theatrical Cut, using this as the new main title.

I think the main reason people don’t like this one is maybe because of the way they introduced Venom towards the end of the film
only spiderman movies can get you this much hype before them, something like 10 years passed since i first watched them and still they are great
I like to imagine it didn't originally use the responsibility theme because Peter doesn't use his powers responsibly throughout the majority of the movie.
That's literally what it was. The Responsibility theme doesn't appear in the film until the end where he decides on wearing the red suit again to suit up for the final fight. This guy just completely missed that wonderful stylistic choice completely.
While I absolutely adore this, I still really think Christopher Young did a fantastic job filling in the shoes of Danny Eflman. That black suit theme is just amazing

As great as this is, I actually love that they didn’t include the responsibility theme in the opening credits of this movie. For most of Spider-Man 3, Peter is an asshole. In SM 1 and 2 he was a compassionate empathetic and responsible man, but in SM 3 he’s completely lacking those traits (especially after putting on the black suit). It’s only before the final battle, when he rediscovers that empathy and responsibility that the responsibility theme comes in (when he opens the chest with the red and blue suit)

It always bothered me be big time that Young didn't use the responsibility theme in the opening of Spider-Man 3, let alone at all except like twice at the end of the movie, so I always by default felt his opening theme was inferior to Elfman's. That being said the work Young did in Spider-Man 2 with the train scene is pretty damn good, and I like his style of music as much as I like Elfman's.
Peter Parker's theme is almost not used in the movie because he doesn't use his powers responsibly, he uses them in his favor and to hurt others.
That’s what makes it even sweeter when Peter dons the original Red Suit at the grand finale and the Responsibility theme plays. Our real hero returns

The Original SPIDER-MAN
There is no denying this is a very well crafted track you have put together but with respect you have totally missed the point of how perfectly crafted the original intro was. The intro tells a story through the music and visuals, it shows Spider-man succumbing to to black suit. Notice the footage that plays before the symbiote and black suit theme strike (1:18) is the "With great power" scene. An intentional decision to show the black suit changing Peter's moral core. The absence of the responsibility theme is also for this reason, no responsibility theme because Peter isn't responsible with the black suit. The film intentionally starves us of that theme until he puts on the classic red suit once again at the end of the film with the theme blaring in full force, it's absence in scenes prior only makes the moment even more special. Also notice that at 2:04 the text suddenly starts dispersing into sand, in the original intro this is the moment sand man's theme starts playing further adding to the visual and audio story telling the original intro provided. As impressive as this mix is I'm not sure why you removed the villain music since both of the previous films had the main villain theme in the intro it seems odd for you to remove them from this.
Thanks very much for the kind words on the mix! That said, I'm afraid I'm gonna have to disagree with most of your (albeit well made) points, so please don't be mad! And apologies for this long essay, but I do feel the need to explain some of the creative choices I've made here as you bring up some interesting ideas.
Firstly, Spider-Man (2002) didn't feature the Green Goblin's motif in the opening titles. Spider-Man 2 was the only preceding film to feature the villain's motif. Furthermore, my point is that using a motif (as in Spider-Man 2) is in itself fine - Doc Ock's motif takes up 18 seconds of a 3:21 track. The Spider-Man 3 motifs, however, go on for *one minute and thirteen seconds* in a 3:07 track. I.E., we've went from around 10% of the runtime to well over a third. As I pointed out in the video description this really is way too much, and quite possibly subconsciously affected the audience feeling of the villains overwhelming the film (which was, of course, a common complaint) from the start.
Secondly, to my ears at least, the original audio sounds pretty much cobbled together - and you can find some proof of this in the fact that the unreleased End Web music is basically just the villain themes from the main titles. That is, they were originally intended to be played over the end titles (where, frankly, I think they belong) but it was later decided to put them over the introduction instead.
I'm also not sure how much I agree with the points on symbolism. The symbiote at 1:18 is obvious, yes, but I'm unsure as to how far it relates to the footage. Clips from the first film were deliberately heavily used in this introduction to remind the audience of the Peter-MJ-Harry love triangle from it, as it was also a major plot point of the third movie. As far as I'm aware, the primary purpose of this sequence was as an audience refresher, rather than to tell a story of its own (trying to do both would, honestly, probably confuse people). Perhaps, as you say, the symbiote/Peter's moral state in the clip as he lets Ben's killer escape is a deliberate edit, but the visual alone of the symbiote over the action is enough. We don't really need Venom's theme was well - upon first viewing we don't even know what Venom's theme *is* at that point, so it's essentially meaningless. I'm also unsure as to how having credits disperse into sand like Sandman aids in the storytelling? It simply seems like a throwaway effect to link the music to the titles, as you say; but it honestly looks so out of place to me that I wouldn't be surprised if it was a later addition. No sand mixes with the symbiote in the main body of the image, for example - the text just has a (slightly shonky-looking) transition effect.
You're very much right about the Responsibility Theme being used sparingly until that final scene (and Chris Young has talked about how Danny Elfman pretty much mapped out for him where a lot of motifs in the body of the score would go, so its use there was probably Danny's idea), but my opinion on its use is pretty much the reverse. At the start of the film (that is, immediately following the titles), Peter still is 'responsible' and so there's no real reason not to feature the theme. He doesn't start the film as an asshole - that happens later. I honestly think that the later appearance of the motif would have been more effective had it featured in the opening titles as a reminder (and then not again in the film until that later scene). I honestly think it was cut for timing reasons - to allow more space for the villain motifs - rather than as an artistic choice.
Finally, from an editing point of view, the footage syncs up *far* better to this version of the theme than the one they went with, which barely fits the cuts in the visuals at all. This strongly implies to me that the footage was cut to the Spider-Man (2002) theme as a temp track, and the final theme edited together at a later date.
Anyway, thanks again for the kind words, they're very much appreciated! Hopefully we can reach some sort of consensus on the theory behind it, too.
For some reason I had it in my head the the Goblin theme played in the first intro but you're right it doesn't. I guess seeing the Goblin's face with the darker sounding part of the theme made me subconsciously edit in the theme, ha. I do stand by my point that the visuals are telling a story, I have a feeling Sam Raimi may have thrown around some ideas for the intro since certain moments seem to good to be just a coincidence.
To add to my point the the Uncle Ben clip was no accident not only is the shot proceeding a shot of Peter angry adding to the aggression of the black suit but also when the symbiote leaves the intro and it's back to the Spider-man theme in full force the first clip we see is a clip from the first film (despite clips from the second film had already started adding to the idea that there is more to it than just a recap, though obviously a recap is the intros main purpose) the clip in question is a triumphant clip of Peter ripping his shirt open and exposing the classic suit.
As much as I adore the moment the music suddenly jolts into the black suit theme (that theme is a highlight of the film in general) you're right about it being clunky edited. When I listen to the individual 5.1 channels the theme for Spider-man 3 doesn't sound as polished as the others.
As I said though your edit is great and very seamless. My favorite bit is the extra oomph the strings have at 1:44

I don't think they should've been like that. Don't get me wrong I love and I mean LOVE the Danny Elfman theme, it's the best Spiderman theme there is in my opinion. But I also adore the work that Christopher Young did with the Venom and Sandman theme! It perfectly fits in the section of the intro where he looses uncle Ben and perfectly transitions back into the Elfman theme when he rips off his shirt to change into Spiderman.
But still a great video, you have my like sir!

Personally I never minded the opening score for 3. In fact I always liked it a little more than some aspects of the first 2 since it, along with the visuals just felt really epic. Though nothing could come close to the opening of 2 with its fantastic artwork. I do see what you mean though it was a little off with all the villain themes and the absence of the iconic responsibility theme but I still like Young’s attempt to make it a little different and more interesting
