This was really great! I actually loaded up iRacing the other night for the first time and went through a lot of the stuff you showed in the first video. I found the shifting on the MX-5 a bit confusing so this helped a lot. I actually bought a subscription like 2 months ago but hadn't really hopped in to set it up because I wasn't really sure what to do first. I think I already mentioned car control, and trailbraking as something I'd like to see more about. You mentioned learning a new track and overlays. For heel-toe shifting I've done it in my car IRL for a couple years now. I also use it in games like Forza and a bit in GT Sport. I was able to get around track doing it with the MX-5 but not nearly as fast. I noticed when the rev matching really helped keep the car stable in turns. It prevents that clutch kick / engine braking that just throws the car into an oversteer.
Thanks for this. These videos reinvigorated my iRacing. I've completed my third race in Rookies. I haven't taken anyone out, and I haven't died. Seen some spectacular wrecks from others though. Currently at iRacing rating 3.40. Global Miata class. I'm pleased. Thanks for this video series. It has been a confidence builder and gave me a strategy for getting racing instead of endlessly hot lapping or practicing. I refer to it often. Looking into leagues as next step. You're a great ambassador for sim racing. Cheers
The word you're looking for at 8:00 is heel-toe. The term used to describe rev-matching (blip) during braking. New to IRacing but not to racing. Subscribed and of course, thanks for the tips!
I started out sim racing with Heel n Toe bc I was super adamant in learning it. Then in turn I got confused when I started racing sequentials instead: Aaah nothing to do, what gear I'm in?! XD
fun fact anti-stall was always on sometime ago even if you didn't have any shifting assists that was updated quite recently that you can now run without anti-stall
on H patters when u for example drive on 2nd gear you can put 3rd on gearbox and still push hard on 2nd, then u just hit clutch and it switch to 3rd gear and with downshit u just downshift on break withouth clutch! works like a charm in iracing

H shifter is great fun for simracing, since i got my SHH shifter i learned to do everything properly and sometimes i just run raceroom, assetto corsa just to go with old school H pattern car and drive around the track. If you have the setup i really recommend to learn and do it properly, much more fun.
I had a manual trans car for a long time when I first learned to drive. I miss it a lot and I'm thinking now I might get the H pattern just so I can enjoy driving again.
Nice video Dan! Funny to see you struggling with ‘heel and toe’ and the Hshifter, I thought you had experience with that tbh. Even then, you can see your experience in racing. I’m new to sim racing and am learning a lot from your videos, practicing heel and toe from the beginning. Only need a Hshifter for the more fun and engaging experience. Bought AC+all DLC’s for a steal on Steam, I’ll wait with going into iRacing till I get better lol I’d like to see you progress in the GT series!
love the content...im a beginner iracing racer and this is helping alot honestly. also i dont think the problem is you with the h pattern. i think its the TH8A Thrustmaster shifter. i have the same one and this happens as well. but its not the driver its the magnetic buttons inside the shifter itself. When there isnt a great connection then the shifter doesnt recognize the next gear and keeps u in nuetral til you fulling press the clutch in again. Hope it helps
Great. I just watched your vid No.1 and immediately subscribed, thank you for a calm, relaxed lesson. Hoping to become a proficient enough racer that I and others around me enjoy the experience (and boy that G29 wheel would help ;) )

I'm sad, I don't think you can use a H-pattern shifter in the MX-5 anymore. Was really looking forward to rowing myself through the rookie license but now I have to use the paddles
I've not had an issue H-shifting IRL, find it really easy and don't have to think about it but I cannot get on with it in the sim for some reason, no idea why... So I'd say don't feel too bad if you also just cannot get along with using a H-pattern on the sim.
I watched your 2d video. I am not familiar with the blip. My only racing experience was in a sprint kart. To race will I need to blip or clutch? That's what I took from what you said. I don't know how to time the blip (only needed on downshift). Is it shift and then blip. I have the g29 and will use those paddles for shifting, I have left foot braked for years (learned from karting). I have MS which has impacted my right foot and it could not reliably go from gas to brake even in my street car so I switch to auto trans (my latest car is a 2019 BMW S3 (G20) which didn't even offer std trans). Hey Paul - you don't need the clutch at all, I don't use it too. The Blip would be before you downshift, and the moment your gas pedal input (from the blip) reaches it maximum you shift with the paddle shifter on your wheel :)
7:35 You dont really need to heel and toe in iRacing at all. If you have a H-Pattern you can just throw it into the gear below and blip the throttle. If the rev of the higher gear matches the rev with the lower, you will get a gear. It needs a little bit of practice to get it consistent. Otherwise I use a clutch button on my steering wheel. ;)
@@DanSuzuki yep the only weird car is of course the mx5. That requires a clutch and shift but you could accomplish that by throwing it in gear and then use a clutch button.
@@DanSuzuki Go watch Jimmers doing any race - he is fantastic at heel and toe. Tombstone seems to be confusing heel and toe with clutchless changes. heel and toe is operating the clutch as normal with the left foot, using the ball/toe of the right foot to brake and then kicking the right heel over the the throttle to do the blip on downchanges. It's a dance! And incorrect, every car should be either no brake gear overlap or heel and toe, simply jamming the gear stick into a gear without a clutch breaks things. Also, ease the throttle on your upchanges, the rev limit bounce is annoying!

@Ashton Foster on pcpartpicker.com you can see if the parts you want are compatible with each other. Like Dan said, you’ll need an AMD processor with that MB, I happen to have the same MB and paired it with a Ryzen 2600. If you’re going with a Ryzen 3600 make sure the bios is updated, because out of the box it doesn’t work with the Ryzen 3000 series. Some shops offer that service. GFX card depends a bit on the monitor you want/have. The 580 is bang for the buck for 1080p, also works good for my 1440p screen, but NVIDIA offers some good cards as well. Edith; sorry for the wall of text. Also don’t forget you’ll need a storage device and Windows! SSD’s are getting cheaper by the day, may want to look into that. There’s some great tech youtubers out there that show you some starting builds if you need info.
To me Blue flags are utterly frustrating at times. I've most commonly had one because some idiot crashed half the field in the first corner and you're behind due to repairs. Once you come out on the track again, "certain people" will scream at you for overtaking them (coz they're slower) when they see the blue flag on you and demand that you let them pass, coz according to them you're stupid and should read the rules. This is the most common blue-flags I've encountered. Utterly stupid. When a driver is clearly faster coming up on me, whether I have a blue flag or not, I will yield the position. But, I'm not gonna yield to a slower driver just coz I'm a lap down and it shows a blue-flag. A faster driver I will of course yield to, and an equally matched driver I'll assess if I'm slowing him down before opening the door or not... but those are usually not the ones yelling at you over comms, incorrectly quoting the "rules". This of course is just my Rookie and low D-class experience.
@@DanSuzuki Hehe, yeh I know.... But getting people to read the rules who make false claims is highly unlikely. They already quoting a rule-book they never read themselves anyways :D

Expensive- 2 choices: (1) SimXperience AccuForce Pro V2 @$1000. plus Fanatec CSL Elite LC pedals @$230., Desk mounting clamp, Tot= @ $1330.

Just tell THEM to actually read the rules. Blue flags on iRacing are actually blue yellow flags and just advisory - no need to follow them :D
@@DanSuzuki Hehe, yeh I know.... But getting people to read the rules who make false claims is highly unlikely. They already quoting a rule-book they never read themselves anyways :D
What do I have to set when I have only a 2 pedal set? I would like to drive all cars with paddel shifters but want to use anti stall as well. Is that possible that I don‘t have manually to clutch or blip in the MX5 or Skippie? 😊
Try auto clutch or auto blip :)
@@DanSuzuki Thanks Dan 😊 Really love your guides 👍🏻
I'd rather see the progression to GT cars btw.
