  • I've decided I no longer need the fence on my miter saw station so I'm removing it and installing this t-track stop block system.

    I have no words! Its beautiful! I made a DIY fence and after a little while kept getting cuts that were off...and I think its because of my DIY fence (and partially because I am an armature lol)! Thank you for all of the tips, tricks, and inspiration :)

    Very slick solution. Beautiful, as well. I have seen another clever option that works if you don't have a miter station, but you have one long table for your miter saw. You make a 12-18" long box that sits on your work table at the same height as your miter saw surface, with a lip that sits over the edge your work table. It's an adjustable outfeed box. The box can slide along your table to get to whatever length you need for your stop. It can have a t-track or a lip on top of the far edge for affixing a stop block with a hold down or clamp. You can also fix a stop block permanently, since you can adjust the location of the box. Just slide this box wherever you need the stop to be, and to support your wood at the same time. You can make these boxes wider and/or deeper to suit your work area. This option eliminates the need to do anything to your work table, and allows you to use any table next to your miter saw. The height of this box is determined by the difference between your work table and your miter saw surface. If you don't have room for a dedicated miter station, this is a nice solution.

    Thank you, thank you, thank you. I'm literally sitting here designing a miter saw station build and trying to figure out a way to optimize benchtop space. I was going to put a lower front shelf just for stop blocks. Your bench makes more sense. you saved me some extra work.

    i just want to say, i love that you used walnut plywood for this. I also find my shop to be my "special place" and love to use materials that most would see as a waste in such a scenario. I work for a cabinet shop which specializes in cabinet doors.. long story short I get ALOT of veneer panels which are scrap to us. Most would see using half a sheet of Carpathian elm burl plywood which is $600 per 4x8 sheet as the back for your tool wall absolutely insane, and thats exactly what i did.. LOVE IT! keep it up, never stop improving your space and never stop sharing the journey. for what its worth.. I also support your decision in having carpet in the shop, most use a broom, you use a vacuum and that sounds like a win in itself to me!

    Cool idea. I was getting ready to build my miter saw fence and I was thinking that I didn’t like how it costed so much space on the work bench. I like this idea much better. So thank you for posting this. This is definitely the route I’ll be going.

    Very nice. I'm just finishing up my miter station (after putting it off for several years) I also went fenceless and lifted your stopblock design (thanks). The right extension of my setup has a downdraft table as the top which I'm also pleased to finally have.

    So after watching your vid I decided this was for me. I had a fence down the middle of my mitre station / workbench. It basically eliminated that workbench from being useful for anything else. Hated it forever. So great idea! It was one of those why didn't I ever consider doing this kind of thing. Anyway, works great. I put cam lever locks on the blocks instead of the knobs, but pretty much identical to your setup. Haven't regretted it 1 second. Thanks man!

    Ah man! Thanks for idea. I've been struggling because I have a small space and not enough room for a nice big station. I use a couple of tables for the stock support when cutting, but getting a fence to line up is a pain when the two different tables are not fixed together. This should solve my challenge! Thanks for sharing!

    I thought about this when planning/building my miter system. I opted to stick with the fence, but attached it to the table with 3/8 dowels every 16 inches or so. When I don't need the fence, and could use more work surface, I just simply lift the fence out the table. Works like a charm.

    • @jeffk464
      @jeffk464 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah was trying to figure out how to do a removable fence. I saw one guy that put t-trac perpendicular to the bench and so could just loosen the fence and push it to the back. He put stops in the t-track so that he could easily return it to the same position.

    • @feversol
      @feversol 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Recently saw a video of why you do NOT want a fence. Having a fence means that a long piece of stock with a bend/warp cannot register against the mitre saw fence to ensure the desired angle cut. Not having the fence, it instead just a stop, means that the portion of wood nearest the blade can register against the mitre saw fence and any warp/bend can still be placed against the stop.

    I like this. I've made 2 mitre saw stations at work and neither have fences. The main reason for the station was to make long wing tables level with the saw to support the timber. A long fence would interfere with boards that may have a bow or spring in them.
    I like the embeded t-track for the stops. I don't have that. The students might wreck it!

    Nice solution option. I have a fence with ruler embedded to use for measurement, but the actual saw fence is about 1/2 inch proud of the bench fence, so the saw fence is the reference. Your solution makes more sense if you don't need or use the ruler and can utilize the space (I have drawers above the fence). You could add a ruler beside the track, but it might wear quickly with use. Great video.

    Nice editing work!
    If the bench fence and miter saw fence are not staying in alignment you have a design problem with the saw station. Sometimes I like a full length fence and sometimes not, just depends on what I'm doing. I always like a gap between the bench fence and the saw fence though as a space to grab material and reposition material.

    Nice video. Your going to miss the flip stops. That’s my only thought on ditching the fence. A flush miter fence is a mistake. My solution was to have the miter fence set back and fully adjustable to move up and back if needed.

    • @24revealer
      @24revealer 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. I would put short t-track the other way and make the fence slide back and forward so you can use flip stops when you need them.

    • @gcase08
      @gcase08 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The solution in the video is not for me. I also set my fence with the tape/track and flip stop back about 1/8” from the saws backstop. It never interferes with the cut but allows for full use of the stops with fast and accurate length setting. The video is going backwards in my option. I hated to always having to spend the time measuring, marking then carefully cutting on the right side of the line, etc,., ad naseum.

    Great video again. I think you've achieved a perfect artsy/entertaining/educational balance. Keep it up!

    This is actually a brilliant idea. Makes construction of the station so much easier AND less wasted space AND more usable work space. Totally stealing this idea. But not "accidentally" using walnut ply...

    You’re an OG ply-a!

    Very nice. Only thing I would change is that I'd offset the track so you could make the stops into flip stops so you can use multiple.

    Upping the cinematography in this one, nicely done. And the woodworking isn't too shabby either hah (as always).

    I’ve always wondered about the fences on miter stations going out of alignment. Since I haven’t made my miter station yet I’m able to plan one out and will most likely not include a fence. As Marc said when someone questioned him, the fence takes up too much space and prevents the cabinet top from being used for other things. I don’t have space in my shop to waste that much space for a tool I only use to cut down stock to a rough dimension. Thanks for posting your version of a fenceless miter saw station.

      The original plans from Fine Woodworking actually address this very topic and it was something I struggled with when I built my portable miter saw station. The fence system is supposed to be back ~1/2" from the fence of the miter saw itself to allow cuts on bowed wood (I say "supposed to be" based on the plans, not personal preference). I checked with a ton of different makers online and watched their build videos and no one really did it that way... so I caved and made my 1/2" MDF sacrificial fence align with the miter saw station fence I built. I can always move the miter saw (or swap out the MDF for a thicker size) - best of both worlds. I liked the fence because of measurement system, so I'll be keeping mine for now!
