I tried very sceptically that this would deter Pidgeons. I had a problem with them coming into a whole in my loft for about two weeks. Anyhow before I could get someone around to fix the problem I sprayed WD40 at the entrance. previously I would scare them away and within 15 minutes they would return. Now they have gone completely. Just amazed that it would work!
I think whenever you are using a detergent product you should let it a 5-10 seconds at least to give it time to work its magic. No one is acting instantaneusly. I have this thought first when I saw the your 'fingerprints' test (the first part)

As regards bug remove, I spray the frt of my CLEAN car before driving on a trip, then the bugs rinse off like nothing at the car wash
