Seeing more and more of my fellow content creators slowly realize the major issues I had with Wano as we were experiencing it week to week makes me feel more and more vindicated by the day. Act 2 still remains the ONLY portion of my 10 YEARS on TH-cam that I ever STOPPED covering the series for a prolonged period of time. In retrospect, the arc wasted so much time while simultaneously squandering so much opportunity. I still LOVE One Piece and I think (barring something like a Zombie Ace coming back to life to fight Akainu with Sabo in Final War) I will ALWAYS love it but it's BECAUSE I love it so much that I was so disappointed by the arc's end. Thankfully Egghead and the trajectory of Elbaf so far has started to wash away the sour taste I had at the end of Wano but I know it won't be as easy for some people to get over.
Also my man's trying to be slick with the 200K edit in the subcription click at the beginning. I see you manifesting and love it! LOL🤣

Act 2 of wano was perfect. It is a slowburn with deep explorations of themes and character development. It is not for everyone especially for shounen fans who like non stop fighting. but don't blame Oda for your problems. The arc is a masterpiece. and it wouldn't be that good without the setup in act 2

I don't respect your opinion nor his. simply because the act was objectively well-written even if it had minor issues.
act 2 is basically the core of wano and one piece themes. if you think it is a waste of time then you are reading it wrong.

I feel like Wano was really pushed to be the "apex" of One Piece, like the arc that remember as one of greatest arcs in Shonen, based on its set-up pre-timeskip.
...But it really feels this arc suffers from a "Narrative Whiplash", where certain plotlines are resolved rapidly while others drag on for extended periods (even resolved outside the manga like the kurozumi nonese). Somehow this Arc felt "Too Fast and Too Slow" at the same time!

Ugh the SBS reveals are another huge gripe of mine with how Oda's been handling things. Especially the latest stuff with the rocky port incident being relegated to being "explained" in an SBS when it's been portrayed as this HUGE incident that boosted Koby's reputation and created this connection between him and Blackbeard. It being in the SBS makes it so the context behind their relationship is lost from the main story unless you read all these SBSs which is horrible storytelling.

Film Red truly wasted Oda’s time. Forced him to rush Wano’s ending and then a random ass Shanks haki wank moment thrown in at the end just because he was relevant to the movie. Eggheads immediate difference in theme showed how bored Oda truly was because he just wanted to get OUT of that arc and stop drawing samurais.

I kinda disagree. It leaves an air of mystery in the main series and feels a bit more realistic. Like in real life there's a lot of stuff about politics/history in other countries/regions most people really know hardly anything about unless it gets briefly mentioned in the news because of some incident relating to it. It's like that in the story, while we were focusing on the straw hats a LOT of stuff in the world of one piece has been going on, basically. Makes the world feel bigger.
Plus it'd take a lot of time to put all the details into the manga

@@CoOlKyUbI96 That's the other thing. The haki stuff is kind of inconsistent in the story. A couple waves of conqueror's and you can knock out upwards of 60-75% of an army from the get go. Maybe as little as 40-50%, but even still, that's a huge portion.
Same goes for observation. The whole Burgess thing stowing away on Sabo's ship and somehow, the most secretive, elusive, impossible to track down revolutionary army doesn't have someone who specializes in observation haki awareness taking roll call at the docks in baltigo to see if anyone snuck on board?
I think Oda mostly uses haki from a combat standpoint (1v1s and small group fights (e.g. roofpiece)) and seldom thinks of its use in a practical sense outside of those scenarios (e.g. wiping out huge chunks of an army).

I think what people misunderstand about Kaido is that his reverence of strength and honour comes is what ultimately causes his depression. As physically strong as he is, he doesn't have the strength in mindset to abide by the tenets that the people he respects so much had. He tries to commit suicide but doesn't actually do it in a surefire way. He tries to be honourable yet ends up defeating the opponents closest to him in strength through underhanded means. He says haki is everything for strength despite having one of the most overpowered devil fruits. Kaido's entire life is a lie that his mindset is powerless to rectify.

i thought it was more that he respects the likes of Roger, Whitebeard and Oden, but he doesn't really understand them or why people think greatly of them. people respect Oden because he brought prosperity to Wano and helped out some people who were pushed to the sides of life. people respect Whitebeard because he cared for his crew like family and helped his home. people respect Roger because he helped inspire a new age of piracy through his escapades. meanwhile, Kaido is none of those things, the only thing he shares is great strength, and even his idea of honour doesn't mean much more than simply being stronger and better at fighting than who he's facing

The op self insert who gets to be on the whitebeard crew and on the rogers crew, but didn't serve as much more than a lens for the viewer to see these crews interact. Things just seemed to happen with him, he gets ferried to laugh tale, his wife just appears, then he has kids, and goes back to wano. • @aetherblackbolt1301

@rockstar-made Oda's poor writing is exactly the problem. Given that we have Kiku, as well as Ivankov with a literal devil fruit to let anyone change seggs, it should be clear that Oda is not subtle on these things, and that Yamato's struggles are not "clearly T representation". Common sense libs will be hesitant on that and wait to see what happens. I waited to see if Oda would, but he didn't. In the end he failed so hard in-story that he had to make a correction outside (in an SBS? I forget).
The out of touch ones will throw away all rational thought and ignore any poor quality writing to jump at even the slightest chance to call a character T representation and immediately call to ostracise and suppress any one who called Yamato she/her. Having literal warmonger tyrant villains like Kaido follow it and showing that as reason why readers should is quite funny to be honest.
And then the last bit is part of the misrepresentation I don't have patience for. Gay people are not Trans and you cannot lump them together. You will find 100s of millions of people that can integrate and live with gay people just fine but draw the line at Trans stuff. Namely because we don't have Ivankov-style devil fruits in real life, whilst the actual medical costs and effectiveness is predatory and used by medical corpos to make millions off of vulnerable individuals via lifelong treatment (as well as effectively sterilising them so they cant have children later if they change their mind). So until we have the scientific and medical advancements, this should not be encouraged or pretended to be viable.

    • @rockstar-made

@@aetherblackbolt1301 I don't disagree that there's people that jump on any opportunity to call characters X or Y but you can't blame anyone for doing it with Yamato when the story WANTED you to refer to her as he/him and as you said Oda isn't subtle at all with these things so this felt like another Kiku case for a lot of people, the story not only justified this line of thought but actively reinforced it until outside material kept coming out calling Yamato a female, it's literally just Oda's fault for his horrible execution of the character.
And i don't know why you're going there but your argument is that transgender people can't exist if they don't pass or a magical Ivankov fruit doesn't exist?? What?? And what do you mean pretend to be viable when it's quite literally the ONLY treatment that leads to any sort of happiness because it's the only thing that actually addresses the issue they're having with themselves?? Sterilizing them on purpose??? Huh?? Brother you can just say you don't like them instead of making shit up and pretending you "care about vulnerable people" that you are actively against receiving the only treatment that actually works. Not to discount anyone’s experiences or feelings, but I think being terminally online, constantly engaging with a slow moving story, and constantly interacting with an extremely varied fanbase causes serious brainrot. Nowadays most of Jay's 'loyal fanbase' thrive around his "Agenda Piece" content so an analytical criticism won't affect that much of his loyal viewers. While for Morj it's the opposite as nearly every one of his loyal viewers consume his content for analysis(I regard theories as analysis too since most of the time it requires analyzing)
Morj doesn't seem to care about backlash that comes outside of his own fanbase, we've seen this constantly as he makes controversial takes in his streams & also during Reverie. The point is that it's more risky for Morj to drop a Wano analysis than Jay. Everyone knows Morj doesn't like Wano and he criticizes it a lot but if he slips something dumb he's gonna get backlash from his own loyal fanbase. The first 6 minutes I've watched, you're thoughts are aligning so damn hard with mine. Character driven emotional moment are the reason I like the story to begin with, and I can put up with some jank/baggage because at the end of the day, I knew that there would be at least some really fantastic character writing that elevates the story. It's why the extended world building works so well, there's that core emotional focus to rein everything in, so you don't mind as much when Oda spends time on random side distractions.
But Wano removed that element. Without that time spent hanging on any of the emotional moments and giving them real weight, it just feels like a shaky plot that exists only to continue making itself longer and longer for the sake of "epicness" or something. But not having that character focus gives you a lot of opportunity to look into things like the plot and writing and it just so happens that on that front, the arc also happens to have some of the worst in the series.
And don't get confused, I don't feel like I'm asking for much here, I just kinda expect the bare minimum in regards to this. There are so many plot threads and things happening in Wano, but almost none of them have an extended character focus, it's just plot, plot, plot. But what I mean is, there are so many obvious things that could've been given focus, but instead, none of them are. Why not directly address the shunning of the Korozumi family for example? It would be such an easy thing to bring to the forefront and immediately raise the bar over what it is currently, but it isn't even something that would be earth shattering, it would be expected from One Piece. But in its place, there's just nothing, man. Years long story arc setting length records, has an amazing set up, and then completely flounders the second half. It manages to be both to fast paced and agonizingly slow at the same time. Like, we spend chapters and chapters of dozens of characters just running around, most of them being lucky to have a single line of dialogue every few months. So all of that time is used up, but never in that is there a moment to breath and slow down for characters to simply exist and take the focus for a few chapters. That's what killed the character focus. How am I supposed to feel attachment to a character when their role is in a single panel after months where they say "urgh" in the dialogue box? You just can't. It needs to pick a select few characters to focus on, and also, wisely choose how to focus on them. 99 percent of wano is just boxing matches, nothing else. And yes, it's a shonen battle manga, of course there's going to be a lot of fighting. But to tie it in to the beginning of the comment, that's what makes One Piece stand out to me. The fact that it can elevate a bit beyond just being fighting, and give satisfying character stories as well as fun battles.
...Uh, the end, or something lol. Anyway, time to watch the rest of the video.

Wano curbed my expectations on the tone of the series with the pacing, the lack of deaths and stakes, and failing to deliver on characters.

@@Kenzo411able alright, so this might become a little bit of a yap session, but basically, thats the problem:
All Kaido ever knew was fighting. Thats why all we got from his little flashback was him fighting, and why everytime he´s shown up before Wano, we´ve seen him fighting (be it in flashbacks, him wanting to go to Marineford, or destroying Kidd and Hawkins, etc). Kaidos entire character revolves around strength and war, which is why he sees freedom and justice in that. This is why he accepts Yamatos gender, why he loved Oden, and why he hated Guernika and the old Hag.
We got everything we needed from Kaido, he´s just not the typical antagonist in that most of his story was being told through other flashbacks and his fight on the rooftop (with Luffy and Yamato). Another big flashback is completely unnecessary, as Kaido has fully served his purpouse.
Yamato hated Kaido, as she saw all the flawes of his doings (how he destroyed the land of Wano, and so many lives with it). So, once she saw Oden, what he did and what he stood for, she couldnt help but want to become him. He was the ideal that Yamato wanted to be, which was why she fought Kaido so many times, and cares for Momo, for examble. This the entire reason, why she wants to be Oden, nothing more
So, the conversations around Yamatos gender are useless, as it doesnt have a thing to do with what the character stands for. Yamato just gets inserted into this bs topic because its big (and relevant) in western culture rn. With Kaido, people just had wrong expectations for something we were never gonna get, because we dont need it: The puzzle pieces are already there, fans just never cared to put them together.

(As an aside, I’m pretty bored of Sanji’s gag now. )
Part of how I measure characterisation is how or (or whether) their experiences change a person.
I see that after the Germa reveal, there isn’t much of that at all. Sanji’s backstory is mostly used to rationalise a power-up. (Maybe I’ve forgotten the details?) We mostly know him as a chef that loves women, now we know he’s ubermensch that loves women? Idk.
In One Piece, we get panels about characters past or what have you yet after we leave an island-most of it is shed. At times, I feel like I’m reading an anthology.
Usopp doesn’t draw from the courage of “Sogeking” for example. The Straw Hats off the back of Ace and Whitebeard’s death, go away for 2 years to train as they correctly surmise that they must be more serious venturing through the New World. In what was supposed to be the most intense moment thus far, we have Luffy effectively trolling whilst fighting “The Strongest Creature alive.”
I feel justified with my stance that these characters appear to be both empty and unlearning.
I’m going to concede with Chopper because I don’t think I can *fairly* say I expected him to be a main fixture for the crew. He’s in alignment with wherever he began really; I’ll say he’s okay I guess.

Wano was Dressrosa but worse. My major gripe with Wano was that it was "Japan, the Island". This directly made One Piece shoot itself in the foot. Oden was mostly a bad character and him dying made him good, it showed a progress in his development. Overall, he was still a major dickhead and got away doing whatever he wanted because "oh look, big Japanese man with diaper is strong so he cool". His glorification, forcing it upon Yamato and as Jay D. stated, preventing them from being their own character, was the final nail in the coffin for me. Yeah, Oden could've been a fun character, but fun isn't always great. He was very flawed, but making Wano revolve AROUND the glorified idea of that character was both good AND (mostly) bad. Oden was the mistake of Wano and I think that without him the story would've been even better.
We could've had an Alabasta 2.0. People fighting a corrupt ruler who sold his people. Said leader gets abused by by his collaborators for being a pushover. A group of rebels wanting to do a coup d'etat to free their land. Momonosuke being the child of a "revolutionary leader" from within Wano. Tying Wano into the actual Revolutionaries storyline would've been amazing.
But no. We got Oden. Man, fuck Oden.
Btw you are allowed to like the character, this is not against anyone liking him. Like Jay D., my issue is the introduction of a "great" character and how they were just wasted potential. He made everything in the story bad and inconsistent.

@@danielg107Wano’s biggest problem( which I see with a lot of weekly jump titles or even serialized weekly stories) is that the writers plan for a lot of the macro elements of the story( the big moments like gear 5 and Oden’s flashback) and fail to account for the smaller details. This is where a good editor comes into play. They will point these out and work well within the vision.
The issue with Oden I find is two fold. One is that Oda tired to do too much with the Oden flashback. His history, initial meeting with the Scabbards, Orochi, and Roger/WB. If Oda had split the flashback where the first half was us seeing him( this can be done when Kine Mon is in front of Oden’s castle and he tells the straw hats) and his upbringing and how he met the scabbards, concluding with him leaving with WB. And then the second half was WB adventures with Roger that could have worked.
Especially better fleshing Oden out so as he can have more depth to him as a character. Because he’s lacking depth.
The other issue with Oden is that he presents a pretty sizable plot hole. If Whitebeard cared so much about Oden, why didn’t he go to war with Kaidou after his death? Keep in mind, he did the same thing when Ace was captured by the WG.
A solution could have been to have there be a war but it ended in a stalemate or failure for WB. Tie in the fact that his illness or age also played a factor. From there the reader can infer that is why he advised Ace not to go after Blackbeard and WhiteBeard acted with Ace’s capture in spite of his injuries because he’s his “son”.
This is what I mean by micro details. Good stories. Things need to connect. Wano doesn’t really follow. It’s one big macro idea without the smaller bits and details to really justify it.

Really the only reason why people saw wano as a “top 3/5” arc was because of recency bias. See, during wano (before gear 5 reveal) people were like “oh!!! There’s still development to be had and it has oden lore so it’s peak!!” and people who thought that long arc = “good”arc (bloated).
However, after gear 5, in both the anime and manga, people said wano was the BEST arc because it had gear 5 luffy (which ties into recency bias)
Now that in the anime wano ended, and inn the manga we are well past wano, we can finally take a more critical loook at wano without 500 glazers breathing down your neck saying “gear 5… gear 5… oden flashback….”

I think some of the perspectives here are flawed but the one I wanted to talk about it is Kaido and Yamato and the analysis on their characters
Because the main theme of Wano is that despair cannot win over the power provided by resolve and hope, it shouldn’t be any surprise that the driving force behind Kaido’s character is the concept of despair. His motivations, his methods, and his moral outlook all stem outward from “despair,” the absence of hope and optimism.
Kaido’s motivations are conveyed to us with his flashback and also the backstory that’s provided for him through the flashbacks and statements of other characters. His flashback communicates to us that Kaido has lived a life where every major stage consists of one despair-inducing event after another.
The earliest we meet Kaido, he is a child soldier in a country crippled by poverty and must constantly wage war to get by. He is trafficked to the Navy, who holds him captive. He is able to escape, and then joins a pirate crew who we are informed are filled with bloodthirsty and treacherous cutthroats who will claim each other’s lives at a moment’s notice. He is then imprisoned and experimented on; it’s alluded that the experience was tortuous for Kaido. Even when Kaido fights Oden and their battle is ruined, there is another element of despair here: Kaido is robbed of the figure he’s pursuing because Oden’s loss cemented he wasn’t Joy Boy.
Beyond being experiences steeped in despair, what these events have in common is that Kaido survived and ultimately thrived through and within them all because he was strong. These life experiences are why Kaido ultimately comes to the conclusion that a person’s worth is determined by war. This conclusion that worth corresponds with strength is why Kaido comes to believe he is the only person that can change the world, as expressed when he meets King. When Kaido learns of Joy Boy and the kind of world that figure is slated to create, Kaido dismisses the notion that he is Joy Boy because he wants to make a different world; this is also expressed to King. It’s why Kaido comes to the conclusion that the person who will defeat him must be Joy Boy; if Joy Boy is fated to be the one to change the world, then he must be worth more than Kaido and therefore stronger. But until then, Kaido carries on and we are able to see how despair drives him in his methods.
We are told near the beginning of the Yonko Saga that pirates have two options: be crushed by the Emperors or join them. The themes of despair are started early in this saga, and we eventually come to see that Kaido has weaponized despair. He’s crushed the spirit of Wano over the past 20 years. He prefers to crush the spirits of pirates who challenge him so they join his crew, rather than outright kill them. The SMILE fruits that he has made make a mockery of joy and hope. He tells Luffy that the samurai have accepted defeat into their hearts. When Kaido mocks Luffy for being close to death the first time Luffy uses Gear 5, when he roars that he cannot be defeated, when he comments on how Luffy’s light never leaves his eyes despite how precarious the situation is. Kaido laments on how humans aren’t able to give up hope. When Kaido believes he killed Luffy, he returns to the Skull Dome and announces that the samurai’s loss has “cost them their freedom and their hope”: despair.
Even the way Kaido’s subordinates are written serve to establish proximity between Kaido and the concept of despair. Jack decimates the Mink population, refusing to even allow them the respite from torture by surrendering. Queen enjoys playing death games that toy with his victims’ sense of hope, most notably being the Ice Ogre virus that forces the enemy to attack their own allies. There’s also the torture he chooses for Kid and Killer, dunking below water then raising them before dunking them again to ensure that they feel hopeless. King abandons any hope for the future, seeing himself as nothing more than a tool for Kaido; he also tries to force despair onto Zoro by asserting that there’s no possible way for a human to beat a Lunarian.
Kaido being ideologically driven by despair is well established by the text. The backstory that gets chided for being a “slideshow” informs us of how Kaido’s life leads him to adopt this approach. But, it’s not just something Kaido inflicts on others. It’s also key to why Kaido is suicidal. Why Kaido wants to kill himself is one of the more controversial aspects of his character; some feel that it went nowhere but it makes more sense when evaluating him through the context of a character driven by despair.
The value Kaido sees in death is one of the more subtle aspects of his character. He tells the Scabbards “it’s no longer the way of the times, but death completes a person,” indicating that Kaido’s reverence for death is a somewhat cultural aspect of his character and the world around him has simply moved past this. This is consistent with Kaido’s declaration that the world has grown boring and reflects his desire to throw the world back into war.
Kaido also indicates that legacy is a key aspect to his desire for death. In his introduction, he muses that Whitebeard “did it right” in regards to dying. It comes across as simply dying is how Whitebeard did it “right” initially, but then Kaido also tells the Scabbards that they weren’t worthy enough to kill him like Oden was. He compliments both Oden and Luffy by saying that they did well because people will speak of their great battles before dying. Kaido doesn’t just value death, he values a death that is worth something. That’s why Kaido doesn’t just jump into the ocean or eat a second Devil Fruit. But what does this have to do with Kaido wanting to kill himself?
Kaido’s belief that war determines a person’s worth is why he believes that only he can change the world. After all, if he’s the strongest then he must be worth the most. When he learns about Joy Boy, this figure that’s seemingly fated to change the world, he comes to the conclusion that Joy Boy must be stronger than him because he’d have to be in order to change the world. Decades of supremacy has cemented in Kaido that there is none who can defeat him. But that means the only person who could give him the death required for him to become “complete” is himself. The irony is that Kaido is so strong, he’s unable to kill himself or be killed by another in a way that he feels is worthy of that very strength. It’s why he’s invested in whether or not Luffy is Joy Boy.
Kaido is living his own despair whenever a promising prospect like Oden, Shanks, Whitebeard, Rocks, or Roger ultimately fails to become Joy Boy. Yeah, those five silhouettes weren't powerscaling. It was Kaido looking at Luffy and going “Can you really do what these men couldn’t?” You can see Kaido’s eyes change over the course of the rooftop fight, going from shaded to clear until he knocks Luffy off of Onigashima. Then, his eyes are shaded again. He feels hope, and is reminded of the truth his life has shown him for decades: in the end, there’s always despair.

I agree with most of Jay's takes, but not the Sanji-Maria one. I have more problems with Wano. I don't like Oden's flashback, not just Oden's character. We already know what happened in this flashback.
My reason is: if you're going to show us what happened, then don't tell us beforehand. It's either one or the other. If you want to show, don't tell; and if you're going to tell, then don't bother showing. Taking away the element of surprise makes it bland. It's like spoiling a movie before watching it.
Also, I hate Yamato, not just because of what they did to the One Piece community, but also because their existence felt like a waste of time. The numbers, Onibanshu, Yakuza, and the Mimawarigumi are a waste of time. They're characters that shouldn't exist.
If you're going to make them NPCs, then don't introduce them. It's not like they have a lot of potential that Oda wasted; they don't have any potential to begin with. We already have a lot of characters. We don't need more groups because we don't have the time for them.

Also there is too many of them & too many scabbards too

Something that always majorly bothered me about Wano was the use of tamas powers. Like shes literally out here brainwashing the enemies into killing their friends and making herself their master, if a villian was doing this shit Luffy would lose his mind and hate them but it ends up being a big reason the alliance wins the war. Literally having luffy awaken as the warrior of liberation all about freedom while his crew is mind controlling the enemy into fighting and killing their own crewmembers is such a weird disconnect that just makes no sense to me.

Oh yeah Tama's powers were hot garbage and waaay too convenient. The SMILEs were literally built up since Sabaody as a major military asset yet when we came to Wano they were treated as a joke, and its users were basically turned into slaves for the protagonists which was ok "because Japanese folklore!!!"

Loved the video and genuine thoughts...
Wano is one arc out of many but the amount of damage it did in making parts of the community temper their expectations needs to be studied especially by those who see the story through the lenses of it can do no wrong.

I'm glad you put this video out. You hit many of the problems I had with the Wano Arc. I think that we need more discussion with the gripe we have with one piece and oda, when it's appropriate.
