It would’ve been so good! I love the idea and concept of WestCOT. As Baxter said, out of all his concepts that weren’t built, this one was the one that hurt the most…
@2:20 This is a detail which is often overlooked. The park itself did pretty decent as far as attendance levels went. But a huge part of the business plan was to have a commerical district but there was a crash of the french real estate market around 1990 or 1991 and they weren't able to find companies that would relocate their offices to Marne-la-Vallée. So that was really the money that was missing in their financial projections.
The construction clips and timelapses brought me right back to my youth, when I would watch Disney Club on German TV every saturday, where they would show those clips as construction updates. My first visit was only 5 days after opening, on April 17, 1992. As local farmers had threatened to blockade the resort, there were army helicopters circling above the resort constantly and there was even a lookout post in the tower on top of the Newport Bay Club. 🙂 Interestingly, they hadn't established any official opening hours yet and the park closed at different times each day, some times as early as 20:00 or 21:00 but one night we were able to stay until 2:00 in the morning. Best thing was that normally all the families with small children left the park around 18:00, so pretty much was walk-on after that, no lines at all. Another thing I really liked was that the menus in the restaurants all included a fixed appetizer, so you basically just chose your main course and they would just bring the appetizer.
Amazing insight! I always love to hear about past experiences in the parks, even better when they’re during the early years! Crazy how military were going around the resort to ensure things run smoothly… Thanks for sharing it ☺️
Thank you so much! I really love making these kinds of videos, so having a smaller audience doesn’t bother me 😊. It’s really amazing just how poorly projected everything was in the 90’s… if only they would’ve gone slower with the hotels, maybe things would be different!
Excellent piece thank you! I had no idea about the future European Hotels, Lava Lagoon, etc. If Disney had not built so many hotels in the first place, they wouldn’t be in the situation they got themselves into. When second gate went in, they did it on the cheap which was also bad management. Hopefully good things will come in the not-to-distant future. Thank you for your reporting on this.
It’s something that would’ve only been built further on in development, because of this only some sketches and early plans were made. Not a lot of people know about it!
This was awesome. I have been going to Paris since I was a little kid in the 90s. This all looks amazing, but Paris as it is also has its charm. Yes, it could be a lot better but being able to ride all attractions of both parks within two days is also nice. Adding all of these different lands and hotels would make it maybe a bit too ginormous for European standards.
I'd love to have Westcot, but the idea of mixing different countries (especially Europe) in one single zone, sounds hard to accomplish. The different styles of buildings from each country... hmm I don't know... But in the end, it would be like having a WDW resort but in Eurpoe, which would be crazy just to think about. Instead of staying 3/4 days to see the whole resort, we needed to stay around 1 week! And for that, my wallet thanks Mr. Eisner for the EuroDisney project not working at 100% 😂
Haha 😂, no way I’d just stay one week! You make a good point about the architectural problems that could arise in such areas. I’d love to be able to completely dive in WestCOT, but I guess it would be something quite hard to accomplish. On the other hand, you have Tony Baxter developing the project, so something nice would come out of it 😅.
Great details on Wescot details. I have never heard so much about it…I am not trying to be a hater but I think that tallest water slide might be Pete’s but I could be wrong and that is minute…Keep up your EXCELLENT work!!
Would be very interesting to look at which impacts on other Disney resort a succesfull EuroDisneyland could have had. With all the things around the world that were canceled because of it, it would be another very frustrating video xD
That’s true! While it’s on the back of my mind, and should remain there for a while, I think that a lot of those projects have already been talked about a lot. There are some which haven’t, such as Hong Kong, and I should touch on that in an upcoming video.
I think this is one of my favorites videos you ever made. Well Done :D I jsut wish that this versino of Disneyland Paris existed. It would have been so nice and exiting to visit. But who knows, maybe in a near future, they'll finally build the third park, and who knows, maybe it'll be a european version of the Westcot, that would be sooooo cool :D Well done and can't wait for your next video :)
Thank you!! I loved making it, it was in the works since March 🤯. I would love to get WestCOT as the third park, it would be so incredible anywhere in the world, so here I’d love it even more 😄
@@themainstreetnews Well, all the work you've put in this really paid :D yea it would be just phenomenal :D Or a european versino of Animal Kingdom would be incredible too!
Incredible video! So many amazing possibilities and it was so interesting. West cot in the future as a 3rd park is something id still love but i feel like theyd go with a tried and tested theme or slight clone of the other parks around the world...
Fantastic job on this!! Having the monorail at DLP would be so incredible!! Who knows? If the expansion of DSP is a success, a third gate could happen - which would pretty much demand a monorail at that point - way too far from the other parks and hotels.
Thanks! I agree, new transportation would eventually have to be built, though today’s Disney, I believe, would be more inclined to built a Skyliner like in Orlando. It’s cheaper and has bigger capacity. I love both transports, but there’s just something about a monorail…
Thanks for such a masterpiece of report, brings light on such a wrong option about Disney to misslocate ,a great idea,,but Europe wasn't what it is but Disney wasn't visionary...best option should be bringing a already successful theme park into Disney 's family to face competition ..or would be a long hard struggling time to come for the . CO.
I’d guess they’d pick EU member states for the Europe district (so at the time UK, Ireland, France-possibly represented by Mont-St Michel, Holland/Benlux, Germany, Iberian [most likely more Spanish influence], Venetian/Mediterranean, maybe an alpine hotel [even if it’s more Swiss than Tyriol])
That’s actually a great idea! I’d love to learn more about the European hotel area, and contacted the firm that developed those plans (SOM) on several occasions, but they never replied. I guess we might never know exactly what it consisted in…
@@themainstreetnews if it were to built today, I would add Croatia, Hungry (possibly a thermal spa theme because apparently this is something Budapest is known for), and Poland to that list
Sounds great! I love how this area wouldn’t just be hotels hotels hotels, but a great area to just spend som time, try different foods and even participate in activities…
I think these plans look exciting even today, but also from an era of past glory. In hindsight its obvious why this never came to realization. It seemed more like a mega project from a desert state.
That’s a good question. WestCot had many versions and ideas, I still think that it would be the best idea for a third park for Disneyland Paris. Disneyland in Anaheim, as I explored in a past video, does have a prime location that would be perfect for it!
For sure, that has been a fan-favourite idea for a long time. It also seems like it may happen as a smaller land in the Magic Kingdom. Which would be nice!
Fascinating what could have been very well researched. I understand Disney is still contracted to build that third gate and has put the start date back several times.Eventually they are going to have to build it though
As a Disney Paris lover, this is the saddest Disney video I've ever watched. I watched it 3 days in a row. I hope the coming days will be better for Disney Paris.
I’m glad to hear my video is good enough to even rewatch! It’s can be sad go look at what could’ve been, but it can also be extremely exciting as it, many times, shows what can still be!
Might be, but now think if we had that park to begin with, and not WDS when it opened, and how it could be getting better since then with expansions and additions. We would have an amazing park in the beginning with now decades of improvements. Currently, we had the worst Disney park, that got cheap after cheap additions and is only now getting some love!
Do you have reason to believe that WESTCOT would have been the basis for the third Paris Resort Park, or is that just your speculation into this alternate future? Also, what would it be called? EUROCOT?
Yes, there is proof of it but it’s possible that it was just a placeholder. Concept art like the ones I showcase in the video point to that being the case, as well as old documents from before opening.
@@themainstreetnews Right, but that concept art was specifically for a version of an Epcot-style park in France and not just the concept art for the scrapped Westcot?
