  • Then did he raise on high the Holy Tone of Antioch, saying, "Bless this, O Lord, that with it thou mayst blow thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy." And the people did rejoice and did feast their ears upon the Beatles and Stones and Monkeys and Troggs and Ramones and Eels ... Now did the Lord say, "First thou pluckest the Holy Strings. Then thou must count to three. Three shall be the number of the counting and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither shalt thou count two, excepting that thou then proceedeth to three. For this song is in 3/4 time.
Good old fashioned vintage tube PA amp conversion into a guitar amplifier. This one came out rather nice. The owner added an etched bit of plexiglas to the face with blue LED lights, so it certainly looks the part.

When I was a teen I had a apartment in the ghetto for a couple years. We had 4 rehearsals a week, I remember looking at the stairs for the police and we had most of the block on the stairs and loaded in the first area off the stairs. We had people ranging age 10 thru 70+ I thought they wanted us dead, I killed the music and said sorry, the old guy said you will be if you stop again. Whew! We weren't even good yet, but we gained some serious respect. When the cops did show up they hung out for a whole set before telling us that we had to turn down. They said if you guys turn it back up after we leave, we were here so your neighbors love it. We even had the old guy bring us Delmonico's, his son worked at his butcher shop and he wanted to tip us, awesome guy. We ate good 4 days a week and I worked every other minute painting cars, I was lumping for the truckers unloading truck 1.00 per thousand pound 80,000lbs per truck I averaged 3 trucks and started work changing tires for 18 wheelers and worked up to mechanic and I stopped that job to work at oil refinery called Cibro in the port of Albany NY. I love this country! I always just said I did this before, but I didn't and they knew it because I was too young and I started work. That one job was a 90 hour work week. All for new gear and the wife.

Thanks, but I was so excited at the time that I could do whatever I wanted it wasn't work, it was being free and getting the chance to learn. What was work was listening to my wife screaming the whole time I was learning guitar.

Great story. At least you kept playing. I didn't do anything quite as strenuous but being on salary would work crazy hours in a warehouse (BTO's "Blue Collar" was a mental fave) and basically gave up playing as a result. Almost an avalance of mayhem/desire for playing once circumstances changed. Almost down there again. Plenty of Gear but a move is slowly killing my desire to play and slowly, me. I'm 61. Too late to get it back.

Rick Delair+ Do you remember the candle at Cibro burning off methane gas 24/7? I rode their ass to use that gas to power other machines while in the refining stages rather than waste it. Life was so fun having the once in a lifetime chance to pick up another trade it wasn't really work, yet today it's like pulling teeth to get a kid motivated. My father told me at a young age, if you don't learn as many trades as you can, this world will chew you up and spit you out. When I heard that I paid attention.

'E's not pinin'! 'E's passed on! This parrot is no more! He has ceased to be! 'E's expired and gone to meet 'is maker! 'E's a stiff! Bereft of life, 'e rests in peace! If you hadn't nailed 'im to the perch 'e'd be pushing up the daisies! 'Is metabolic processes are now 'istory! 'E's off the twig! 'E's kicked the bucket, 'e's shuffled off 'is mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisible!! THIS IS AN EX-PARROT!!
Replace "parrot" for "amp" and there you have it :)

Damn, you're going to make me want every old amp out there! The more I watch, the more I understand your circuit changes and choices. I did a RobRobinette mod to my 5E3 clone last week to have a switchable coupling cap. Switches between stock .1 mfd and .0022 mfd. Also built a 5F1 kit with the adjustable negative feedback ala Uncle Doug. Now if only my playing ability will catch up to the amount of gear I have now lol. Hope you had a great 4th Brad!

Hey, that Stromberg Carlson is the same type I redesigned for guitar a couple of years ago! I mentioned it once in a comment I think. For those who are interested (excuse the novel): Totally redesigned the circuit. It's a hybrid of various circuits and ideas. No original caps or resistors at all. Replaced the ever-microphonic 6U8 with a 12AX7 wired as a long tail pair PI (tried cathodyne, wasn't a massive fan), set the first two stages of the first 12AX7 to cascade each other with the Mic 1 volume pot in between the two gain stages. Used a Vox/Fender style tone stack after the gain stages, which meant drilling a hole for the Mids mini pot between the bass (phono) knob and treble (original tone knob). Mic 2 is a pre-PI master volume. Added a Vox cut control, mounted on the rear pannel and pulled the RCA jack out and stuck a toggle in for different cathode bypass caps on the first stage. Drilled a hole for a fuse.
The impedance is switchable, I ran a wire out of the center of the speaker octal socket, similar to how you did. The mic 2 input is now the speaker output.
Amazing tone, my grandfather who has played for many decades claimed it's some of the best sound he's ever heard on electric guitar.
My amp in particular had really high plate voltage, on the upside of 370 volts. Ate through tubes fast. I got that down by installing a small value resistor on the primary of the PT which dropped maybe 5-10 volts. Now the amp is biased to about 100% and only has 307 volts on the plate!

Wow, that Stromberg-Carlson amp is actually not a bad little guitar amp at all, you're getting some pretty cool clean and overdrive tones from it, I reckon that amp would really scream if you connected-up a booster pedal of some kind, say a TS-9 Tube Screamer, or maybe a Rangemaster Treble Booster, between the guitar and the amp, I'm currently doing some repair work on my Tonebone Hot British Distortion pedal, it's working okay but it needs some replacement pots which I'll get next fortnight, going to try it through my mid 70's Fender Super Twin amp later on, anyway, hope you're having an awesome day, and that you and your family are all doing well, please keep the videos coming....cheers!!!!!!

I have etched plexiglass with bottom lite LED's for my Ham radio "On The Air" sign. They look pretty slick. If you go to my youtube page you'll see it a bit more clear. You'll also hear a half dozen of us messing with or audio. I use a Behringer X18 with my Ham radio gear.
You do great work! Don't let anyone give you crap over tagging off the tabs like you did. It would have been a colossal pain in the ass had you completely re-wired that cap.

Merry Christmas, Brad!, having great friends and customers, like this gentleman, is what it's all about. When you spoke of "lead dress" issues, one of the aspects of avionics, which really came into play in the 1980's, was H.I.R.F. (high-intensity radiated field). You may want to do a little research into the use of ferrite beads, specifically within the power supply, and the inputs. I was shocked to see the difference in 'noise reduction', when ferrites were included at key locations within backplane assemblies, and am certain the the effect may be even greater in amplifiers.

Very cool Slick - nice refurb and great guitar playing. I would have saved the can cap and repacked but I like what you did and naysayers be damned. Getting a good solder on the whole tab to a brand new tab should be pretty easy to do and is not disruptive as you point out. One basic connection to worry about, make it clean, lots of surface area and let it sweat like a plumbing joint.

      Worth exploring.

Brad. I've been following your videos for a couple weeks. You make the electronics and troubleshooting amps more understandable for me. Thanks!
IS there any hope for a misused, abused and non-functioning Crate classic fifty?
I loved the presence and tone of the amp when I bought it but it didn't stand up long to my Acid Rock temperament.
Is it worth the trouble to rework?
I replaced it with a Laney cub, 15 wats of tone but it gets covered up by the rest of the group. I'm missing my Classic 50.
Please let me know your opinion.
    Thanks,
    Jimi

Love your channel! I have a Vox lil night train and have read that it’s possible to run a 12bu7 in the power section instead of the stock 12au7. Any thoughts of n this mod.

A lot of old PA/hifi tube amps make good guitar amps. The old Italian Geloso amps are a fairly common conversion - and I've also read of a guy who was running an old 1955-vintage Philips 2,000w (yes, that's 2 kilowatts) arena PA amp through a wall of 4x12s...

My first amp was a David Bogen PA. I never did any conversion work on it, but when cranked to 10 it had great tone and decent volume. I was a steady customer for the tube tester at the local drugstore and my dad had to show me how to repair and solder the copper film in the transformer. Like many of us guitarists, in 20/20 hindsight, I wish I kept it. You would be working on it.

My grandfather worked at strombergs in Rochester, ny and retired from that plant. In Rochester there are probably many of those old amps laying around.

Brad have you checked out any of the jet city brand amp? I have a Amelia 50 with a two twelve cabinet. I really like the amp, but was woundering what a amp tech like you would have to say about them.

on those 9 pin preamp sockets, I am unfamiliar with that center tab in the middle. looks like some resisters are connected there. is that tab just a convenient place to junction components? I've only ever used the type that has just a blank home in the center. thanks man. good stuff

Btw, I am missing some grid stop resistors in there!
Especially the power tubes to prevent noise and oscillation, but a cathodyne really needs one for blocking distortion.

    • @jonnybeck6723
      @jonnybeck6723 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

But, duh, why would you want to block distortion??

Also, a fantastic player that obviously revels in the sonic values you impart on these amps.
Do you fix Sovtek mig 50h amps?

  •  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Can you describe why you added the master volume? It seems redundant to me but I would love to know the reason. (a volume control on the guitar and already on the amp?)

I see that Pyramid had a manufacturing plant in Gastonia, NC. My home town, haha. In 1970, my dad fixed up an old Stromberg Carlson PA for me to play guitar through. Had great breakup. That was prior to me saving my money and getting a Blackface Deluxe the next year. Wish I still had the Fender, it'd be worth a pretty penny today...
