If the patch is weak, I think there are key days or a week that I go in and play. For example in Genshin if you don't play for a few weeks you get that returnee event that give you double the rewards in domains and 500 gems. Do it the day of the live stream getting to get the codes, do the endgame challenges before they expire and the new patch maintenance rewards to get a hefty amount of gems quite fast. Also keeping an eye on easy short events if a good idea.
I'd say the biggest problem in a gacha is honestly their longevity. I love the fact that Genshin has put in 4 years so far - however, the problem is the ROSTER. Oversaturation of characters can plummet one's hopes of obtaining certain characters, and powercreep continuously makes them less relevant. As another has said, FOMO is a real thing, sure, but the saturated rosters alone are a nest full of pretty useless characters compared to even their 4 star colleagues (How many people remember that Arlan from HSR is even playable?). The other problem with such an oversaturated roster that gacha devs in general have not found many solutions to is how, with so many 4 stars available, you aren't guaranteed to get them. Ever. At least rolling on 5 stars I know the POTENTIAL is there and eventually guaranteed - not so with 4 stars. I've heard tales upon Genshin Impact's Chevreuse release of people pulling upwards of 160 times without a single copy. There is no cohesion for building a personal roster/team if 4 stars don't eventually get the same treatment as 5 stars - Having to wait on a quarterly rotation for Bennett or Xinqiu or Fischl is so extravagant that one could have the sentiment "oh gee! Only 2 more months and I can guarantee my C1 Bennett!" or some such. Pick whatever character or duplicate pull you like.
I agree with this view you make a lot of good points one thing I do feel strong about is the 4 star situation since realistically you can spend more money on a 4 star then the 5 star since it’s not Guaranteed.

"fear of losing out" that's the problem for me
That a good one I don’t like the fear of missing out either
