Over the course of the action scenes, Russell Crowe lost all feelings in his right forefinger for two years afterward. He also aggravated his achilles, broke his foot, cracked his hip, and popped some bicep tendons out of their sockets. But even so, he won an Academy Award for best actor. An absolute LEGEND
Oh my!!! Props for not using a stunt double but those injuries… yikes!

"At dawn, when you have trouble getting out of bed, tell yourself: “I have to go to work - as a human being. What do I have to complain of, if I’m going to do what I was born for - the things I was brought into the world to do? Or is this what I was created for? To huddle under the blankets and stay warm?" - Marcus Aurelius
I'm like, damn Marcus, why you coming at me like this almost 2,000 years later?
Yeah man, no need to attack us like that lol
I love this movie so much. Here in Italy Gladiator is a cultural phenomenon and Russell Crowe is super beloved. I grew up watching this movie and i never get tired of it.
Spartacus is much better than this. It's an average movie compared to Spartacus.
@@dtz1000 Lolno.
"That makes us Brothers", "You trying to boink him too then?" haha that was good.
We see how he moves 😆
Maximus' son would appear more than two years younger than Lucius in his memory, because he hasn't seen him for that time period.
Bruh that detail!!!!!!!!! 😭 I’m not crying!
But he was shown not only in Maximus's memories. The boy looked exactly the same in the scene when the soldiers came to their house in the present time.
Phoenix was a perfect cast for this role. Every great story MUST have a high quality villain.
Even to this day, my dad will like buy me a can of beer or something, and toss it to me, and he'll say "am I not merciful?"... and I'll answer "AM I NOT MERCIFUUUUUUUUU-"
Lmfaooooooooooo I need to start doing that with key son
Beer in a can? Obviously an UNCULTURED american (and that's NOT beer).
14:45 The reason I believe, besides outright spite, is to eliminate any chance of reprisal and retribution from Maximus' family.
If they were left alive, and Maximus' son learned about his father's murder at the command of Commodus, it wouldn't be a stretch to fear the son of Maximus gaining the ear of the armies and sacking Rome just to get to Commodus.
You should read Niccolo Machiavelli's "The Prince" as it talks about similar situations, among other things. You'll get a better understanding of modern politicians as they do similar things mentioned in the book. Hence the term "Machiavellian".
Since i mentioned books and you've watched Gladiator, read The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius. Good book about stoicism.
that + Roman custom of removing parts of history. When man and his family is eliminated, its like they never existed. When they never existed, there's no legacy.
23:20 "Bread and Circuses" BTW there's a ruin in Rome called the Circus Maximus, big chariot race track.
28:30 "Can we have some sort of disguise for your head? If you wanted to meet the Emperor, we can't let him see your face...."
Ridley Scott: "Wait for it...." 😉😉
😆 😆
Oliver Reed, the actor who played Proximo, died during filming by getting into a drinking contest in a bar
That's why his final line is from the earlier scene when he was in the arena, and his back was to the camera when he was stabbed to death.
Ooooh my gosh!!!! That’s tragic…
_"I thought he had the loyalty of the soldiers."_ That was the Praetorian Guard, the personal guard of the Emperor of Rome. As such, their loyalty to the Emperor was absolute. Well, in theory, anyway. 😯 In practice, that has not always been the case.
noticeable by wearing royal purple cloak, as opposed to the Legions red
At least two Roman emperors were killed by the Praetorian Guard.
It never ceases to amaze me that more people have seen 300 than Gladiator when it comes to these reactions
I've watched 300....but barely remember any of it.....
Gladiator was an amazing movie.....it left a good impression on me and i remember almost every scene...... that's how good of a film it was....
I'm surprised these TH-camrs never want to react to Spartacus as that is a much better movie than Gladiator and 300.
Sparta is tough but Gladiator just hits differently with story and acting next level especially Joaquin and Russel
Love your reaction, Joaquin Phoenix deserved an Oscar for supporting cast for his performance of his character, and of course Russell Crowe was phenomenal playing Maximus he won an Oscar for his character and this movie is in my top 5 all time!
Joaquin, the sound track, this movie was perfection.
13:40 The praetorian guard is a lot different from the army soldiers. Whereas the army is not even allowed within the city of Rome, the praetorian guard was the Roman equivalent to the secret service.
38:45 When Maximus fought Titus, the crowd was still with him because he openly defied the emperor. Notice, he was waiting to see whether the emperor gave the thumbs up or thumbs down so that he could do the opposite.
SIDE NOTE: As emperor, Commodus was hated. I saw his bust when I visited Rome and they showed his disrespect by not giving him a beard. Every other Roman emperor is depicted with a beard on their bust. Also side note, Commodus actually did regularly fight in the arena.
Augustus, Tiberius, beards?
@@barreloffun10 My bad. Just reviewed my notes from the Vatican City tour, and I remembered this wrong. It's not that he didn't have a beard. His bust DID, in fact have a beard. The tour guide remarked that the bust of his beard was made to look deliberately unkempt.
Yes, that moment when Maximus recognizes Cicero as he leaves the coliseum is a beautiful one of hope!
@30:00ish... the gladiator who sounds like Arnold Schwarzenegger is Ralf Moeller and he is German and, like Arnold, was a professional body builder! As you can obviously see from his physique!
I believe Arnold was Austrian.
@@TD-mg6cd Rudy said that being a body builder was like Arnold, not that Arnold is German.
@@jerodast My bad.
When Maximus rides to see his family, he basically rides a horse all the way from Germany to Spain
So when you said betrayed by the soldiers, yes Quintus chose his new emperor but the men who were to kill him were Praetorians, royal guards loyal to the emperor, they were not the men of his legion.
Roman Emperors often killed entire families of rivals so they could confiscate the property. But look up some Marcus Aurelius, a great Emperor but also a philosopher
13:45. So there are separate armies called legions, maximus was a general to one legion, Praetorian's are like the kings guard, they were notorious for doing what they wanted even a ceasar had to be warry of them.
"I will see you again, but not yet. Not yet..." 😭 😭
This movie has the same level of historical accuracy as Napoleon, but it's such a better story.
After a quarter century, Gladiator 2 opens this fall. Trailer is up.
And it looks terrible
Nobody wants this.
Hans Zimmer chose Lisa Gerrard to vocally accompany his last three musical pieces ("Elysium", "Honor Him", and "Now We Are Free") in part because she composes what she sings in her head, in a language she invented as a child, that only she and God understand. So when she sings in this language, as she did on this soundtrack....she says she's singing to God.
My favorite movie of all time since it came out in 2000. What makes this movie so spectacular is the drama within the movie itself. Great reaction. ❤
Nah. Spartacus is much better.
If you're wondering what the german was yelling at the beginning he said 'you are dogs, you are damned dogs'
No matter how smart and capable the emperor's daughter was, he could not have made her the Protector, the new Caesar. It was absolutely impossible. Roman society was STRICTLY patriarchal and Roman women had no part in public life. They were not allowed to vote, hold public office, or have any military status. Since women were citizens through their male relations, they were able to access the legal benefits of citizenship only with the help of a man; thus making Roman women dependent on the men from their immediate and extended family for all legal matters. It was thought that the more educated a woman, the more pretentious she will become, which would lead to difficulties. Moreover, a high intellect was often seen to be related to sexual promiscuity; which was certainly undesirable. Even an Emperor's daughter would NEVER have been accepted as the leader of the Roman armies.
Gladiator was one of The last truly Oscar worthy movies. They don’t make them like this anymore.
46:42 The young actor playing Lucius looked genuinely scared in that scene.
I bought my first dvd player just before this film came out on dvd. I saw it at the theater so when the dvd came out it was the first dvd I bought. It's such a dramatic epic feature with incredible acting and soundtrack.
That’s some very good analysis there at the end but film took a lot of creative liberties in the relationship of Marcus Aurelius and Commodus. In truth, Commodus was extremely young when Marcus Aurelius died (he was only 16). They were also very close, Marcus Aurelius always bringing Commodus to his tours and campaigns. Commodus also showed a lot of promise, being tutored by the best the empire could afford. The faults of Commodus only started showing after Marcus Aurelius died, he had a number of assassination attempts, combined that by being very powerful and also very young, that would damage anyone’s psyche lol.
Was looking up some stuff on Commodus(played an old PS2 game "Colosseum:Road to Freedom", where you're a Gladiator and get looped into the plot to assassinate him). Apparently, he dressed up like Hercules and regularly took part in fights in the arena(think Netflix put a documentary on him and a few other members of Rome's more dangerous leaders).
Ahhhh yeah that’s very different but assassination attempts at such a young age is also traumatic.
@14:11 it's so when one gets exhausted (from carrying him)... He can switch to the other.
To your thoughts on Marcus Aurelius, a famous quote from author G. Michael Hopf is, "It's hard to be a great man and a good man." It might be impossible at the world leader level.
"Lament with me brother... Our great father is dead"
...Nia 🤨.
😂😂🇬🇧
lol! The audacity of him!
The Praetorian Guard was not a part of the regular Roman Army but the personal bodyguard of the Emperor and responsible to him alone. They could and did make and break emperors.
24:57 - Oliver Reed/Proximo passed away while they were still filming this movie. He was drinking and arm wrestling dudes in a pub and had a heart attack and passed away in the pub.
Instead of recasting the role, they just rewrote the script to have his character get "deleted". His character was originally supposed to be the one in the coliseum in that final scene of the movie.
The show must go on and anything for money.
first, have a safe trip.. second, i save up movie reactions to watch and always keep yours for last.. like a dessert.. thank you for your honest comments and perfect smile
The funny part is she calling him "Give Us Free" like I didn't call Dijmon EXACTLY that all the way up until like 5 years ago! 😂
@Nia Maki
Just started the reaction - currently at minute 13:52 yes Maximus has the loyalty of the soldiers but the Pretorians are the „Kings Guard“ and because Commodus was the new Ceasar / Emperor / „King“ that’s why they listen to him- that’s why even Quintus couldn’t help Maximus, the Pretorians would have killed him to if he disobeyed and Maximus couldn’t reach out to the army or other soldiers, the Pretorians acted to quickly and silently…
23:51 - If you look on the left side of the screen in the stands, you can see a movie camera and a guy in a t-shirt and blue jeans. Lol
You bringing up the social media aspect and then looking at the thumbs up and down buttons on the UI - such a good breakdown!
I studied Latin for 6 years as a preface. The Colosseum is truly an engineering wonder. Imagine if ALL pro sports, Hollywood, singers, ALL of entertainment had a single place they all dreamed of playing at in the known WORLD was a single place. That was the Colosseum. Built so you could hear someone speak in the entire arena that held 50-60 THOUSAND people. They even used to flood it and had entire ship battles!
Being the best or most famous gladiator was like being Elvis, or Kobe, or Leonardo DiCaprio. Even if they remained a slave they lived better than most of the population with woman and feasts, etc.
I wondered if the crowd could even hear the speeches from the hype man/narrator.
@@alijaffery7735 Obviously if everyone was screaming you wouldnt but where the hypeman was stationed the way it reverberates you could absolutely hear him. Also its the origin of thumbs up/thumbs down. It was reversed in Roman times so a thumbs up meant they died but people no wouldnt understand that so they changed it for the movie.
The name of Maximus's horse that he tells Lucius are an inside movie joke. Their name's he says are Argento and Scatto which translate into Silver and Trigger respectively.
Silver was the name of the Lone Ranger's horse. Trigger was the name of movie cowboy Roy Roger's horse.
You don't get nearly enough views and are easily becoming one of my favorite reactors of all time. Keep up the great work.
Wonderful reaction! One of my all-time favorite movies. Thank you for including that last scene with Juba. "I will see you again...but not yet". Juba is going home to see his family in the real world and Maximus went to his family in Elysium.
the emperor Marcus Aurelius was known as the philosopher in Rome history
I can share your surprise at how good this movie is. I went to see it in the theater when it came out. I figured it was just another action flick, a good way to waste a couple of hours. About 1/3 of the way through, however, I was hooked. Great story, great acting, directiing, and production. It's turned out to be one of my all time favorites. The music is even incredible.
The Marcus Aurelius here bears little resemblance to the historical figure. This is movie is fiction, not taking anything away from that, a story doesn't have to be accurate to be good. However, he did have a son Commodus who suceeded him for a short time. That's about it historically.
Not skeet on your own blood...46:19🤣🤣🤣🤣 The way I hollered when you said that..
16:39 The actor's name is Djimon Hounsou.
Yeah great actor. Think he's in blood diamond, another good movie
@@gyros69420 Yeah, and The first Guardians Of The Galaxy.

Your parallel to social media is quite profound. This is one of my favourite movies and I’m really happy to see that you enjoyed it and got so much out of it.
In Ancient Rome slaves often bought freedom for themselves.
Slaves werent called slaves yet ... because that term comes from centuries later, when the muslims enslaved the SLAVS / SLAVIC PEOPLE.
For this reason it is bad to think about them in the same "terms and limitations" as the slaves in the USA, but what else can you expect from americans?
21:21, I keep hearing that in the upcoming sequel Gladiator 2, it will be disclosed that Lucius is actually Maximus's son.
"Stop your whining"😂😂😂😂 I couldn't stop laughing when you said that! 🤣
Hello Nia Maki, I enjoyed this movie very much It is like getting two movies for the price of one Early in the movie during the battle with the Germans The sound crew ripped the recordings of the Zulu Warriors war chant from the movie " Zulu " (1964) and dubbed the recording in place to give voice to the German Warriors. The production company didn't think that their audience would not recognize that the Germans were speaking an South African language and not German. Tricky, very tricky
Keep in mind he hadn't been home in nearly 3 years at the beginning of the movie... so the boy in his memories is roughly 4 or 5.
58:00 Yeah. You know the saying about Preachers children being the most wild. There are as many instances of children being the opposite as those that 'the fruit doesn't fall far from the tree' instances.
Factsssss
13:42 "I thought he had the loyalty of the soldiers"
He did, loyalty of the actual soldiers, those guys going to execute him weren't his soldiers. They are Praetorian Guards, the emperor's personal bodyguard. You can tell them apart by their black/purple clothes, purple being the royal colour. They do not fight on the front like actual soldiers, their job is just to protect the emperor. If Quintus had asked any of the soldiers from Maximus's legion to execute him, none of them would've done it.
Also a nice little detail to the fact that the Praetorians aren't actual soldiers is when Maximus mocks the second Praetorian before he kills him. "The frost, sometimes it makes the blade stick". This is probably one of the first things the soldiers learn/experience when out on the northern front. New recruits probably make this mistake a lot and experienced soldiers take the piss at them. It's something you learn because you're actually out there on the front, fighting a war, sleeping in a tent on the cold winter floor. The Praetorians on the other hand spend most of their time in Rome, sleeping in comfortable warm beds, only leaving the city whenever the emperor does so. They're not out on the front, they don't fight in wars like the actual soldiers do, they lack the experience. So it makes sense that the Praetorian would make such a rookie mistake, a lesson that Maximus probably learned years and years ago.
14:34 "If they're killing him, why go through the lengths of doing that to his family too."
Because they know he has a son. If his son grew up, he probably would've figured out sooner or later that Maximus was assassinated by order of Commodus. So, when he's older, his son probably wants revenge. And since the legion was loyal to Maximus, if they hear from Maximus's son that Maximus was assassinated, his son would have an entire legion hellbent on revenge at his disposal (it wouldn't be the first time in ancient history that a son sought revenge for the death of his father). So Commodus just ties up this 'loose end' before it even becomes a thing. He doesn't want Maximus's vengeful son coming after him years later down the line.
For you are in Elysium AND YOU ARE ALREADY DEAD. What we do in life, echoes in eternity.
30:05 That’s actually not a coincidence. He’s a German actor named Ralf Möller. They made a 90s TV spin-off to Schwarzenegger's Conan movies called Conan The Adventurer, and he played Conan.
The scratches on Maximus face are real. His horse backed into some tree branches while filming.
wrt the conversation between Maximus and Proximo at around 25:00, you said Proximo became an "ally" of Maximus to help him gain freedom. That's not true. Proximo is the slave owner, so he could free Maximus any time he wants. He doesn't give a damn about Maximus's freedom (at that point in the movie, at least), he just wants to make as much money off Maximus as he can. And the best way to do that is for Maximus to put on a show, and a way to motivate Maximus to do that is to inform Maximus that if he puts on a show and wins the crowd, then eventually "after enough people have died" the Emperor would present him with the wooden sword and declare him free. But Proximo has no intention of freeing Maximus until the Emperor does that.
15:18 there's no way i was gonna miss the chance to say.... Thats what she said. 😂
"Who will help me carry him?" 😭😭😭😭😭
He brings two horses so that one can rest while he rides the other.
Oooh I see!!!
Imo Maximus is a PERFECT protagonist. This movie doesnt need a sequel
Russell Crowe is, in fact, an expert horseman. He also did all his own stunts .
Funny thats Arnold's best friend, they come from the same place its why they sound similar
24:35, so sad that Oliver Reed died while filming this movie. I always thought Ridley Scott had an awesome death scene envisioned for this character - Proximo the old gladiator going out in a blaze of glory with a sword in his hand. But instead we get the scene of him being executed by the Praetorians.
You should check out more Ancient Rome classics like Fall of the Roman Empire, Quo Vadis, Spartacus, The Robe, Ben Hur, and Cleopatra.
Great suggestion!!!
Maximus does have the loyalty of the legions but the guards in purple are the Praetorian Guards, think of them as a extremely ruthless secret service.

Strength and honor are the most important ideals for men. Every man should learn from this.
Historically speaking, Commodus and his father were co-Emperors when Marcus died, so Commodus became the sole Emperor. He was poisoned by his wife. He did fight in the Arena from time to time, but they were all rigged.
@15:00 and...... that's why this work of art is above movies like 300. It's actually above most movies from whatever genre. 🍻
You have a talent for survival. That's one of the coolest subtle disses ever and yet it's still respectful. Also he killed the wife and kid just in case one of them wanted to take vengeance
I like your questions on the movie. Got me want to rewatch it in a different light.
The praetorian guard are the imperial gaurd they are lyal to the imperial family, they are usually based in rome , they dont answer to the army or a general( maximus) hisarmy is loyal ,
13:42 Pretorians aren't really a "soldiers" they are the bodyguards of Emperor

38:17 what were you expecting for all them sitting around in a circle holding hands sing kumbaya and playing patty cake
Great reaction to a great movie. Not very historically accurate same as other Ridley Scott flicks, but good nonetheless.
As to your question at 13:44 with the attempted execution, those are Praetorian Guards, the Emperor's personal guards and intelligence agents. Not regular army. Tho if you look at history the Praetorians, established by Augustus the first emperor (27 BC), would quickly became essentially a political tool in Rome. They've assassinated multiple emperors and even auctioned off the seat to the highest bidder after one assassination. I believe it was Didios Julianus during "The Year of the Five Emperors" (AD 193)
🫢 gasp! That’s crazy…. Well paranoia would definitely be warranted then lol
My top movie
So, one aspect they didn't show in the movie that would have helped you understand why they don't simply run away was the branding. As a slave especially back then you have no documentation showing your freedom while the master has their mark, symbol or initials branded into the skin to show the slaves are property. Even if they run away, slave catchers will see the brand catch them and either return them or brand them FUGITIVUS, fugitive on across the forehead and then gladiators become miners, field hands or worse. As gladiators they practically are professional athletes not laborers.
Hi Nia, I feel like your reaction was genuine. Not staged and stupid like some others. Thanks for that.
As a history fan, I love the movie since it is all based on it. It is basicaly a alternative reality where Marcus Aurelius decides not to make Commodus an Emperor (excelent idea for a movie). In reality Commodus was often pretending to be a gladiator and even wounding his opponents before fights to win. In the end, he wanted to execute a few people who were inconvenient to him. They found out and had him assassinated.
And yeah, your analysis of the ending and result was correct. If you are not familiar with the history, then I have to say that you are really clever and wise. I guess we are going to see the result in Gladiator 2 soon. 🤭
They say things come in threes. You mentioned 300, and this along with TROY are those big 3 for the sword and sandal movies made recently which I grew up on in the 60's. Sampson, Hercules, and even Jason and the Argonauts gave me interest in ancient history. ROME holds up well for a TV series. Entertainment isn't historically accurate nor should it be.
Most reactors miss Maximus leaning down to smell Commodus's perfume on the dead emperor. We see Maximus is in tune with his sense of smell when he checks the earth for fertility. The Praetorian Guard had the responsibility of both the FBI and the Secret Service when they existed until corruption made them a liability instead of an asset.
girl what an amazing reaction you gave us, thank you 🙏❤
At the beginning, Maximus doesn't have the loyalty of the Praetorians. They're not really part of the army. More like half FBI and half Secret Service.
Yay, was waiting for this one! 🥰 such a good movie! and it always hit me in the feels too 😢
Yesss such a good movie!!!

Great reaction to a legendary film! Subscribed 👍🏽
Preatorian soldiers were from Rome directly, sworn to serve the emperor. There was a difference...purple is Rome
Edit - Lucious is the son of Maximus hence Gladiator 2 from what I've read. This movie will be tough to ever beat
"SMILE FOR ME NOW BROTHER"
@Nia Maki
In reality Marcus Aurelius gave it his all to get Commodus to be the best person possible but Commodus really was just awful and didn’t learned from the teachings and all that…. He was a good father and teacher but sometimes you just have awful offspring as hard as it sounds… By the way all those years of war in Marcus Aurelius life were actually just defensive wars to hold the borders of the Roman Empire… he was a great Emperor, loved, wise, very reflective and cared about Rome and the people
There is also a Netflix series about Commodus and how awful he was and how he used his spoiled position and not listened and learned from his parents since he was a young kid, I don’t know how good and realistic this series is tho, never watched it, I got my knowledge from books and teachers
But back to the movie: just awesome, if a person doesn’t cry at the end this person is not to be trusted 😜😢 in my opinion this is the best film ever made and it hits harder everytime you watch it…
Enjoy your reactions! Some movies I recommend Legends Of The Fall, Last Of The Mohicans, and Dances With Wolves.
Great reactions. Glad you enjoyed it. One my fav movies.

I like the way that Elysium (heaven) to Maximus is his home in Spain. And, of course his memory of his wife & son were waiting for him in the afterlife.
Commentators who're religious, what do you think heaven is like?
I see some similarities between this movie and the Gladiator.
• Their son was murdered.
• Both have a face-to-face with their son's killer where they proclaim a vow of vengeance.
• Both end up killing their son's killer by stabbing them in the throat with a dagger type weapon.
• Both movies released the same year. The Patriot was released about 3 months before the Gladiator.
Patriot is one of the most horrible movie ever made. Don’t know why millennials and Gen Z likes it?
@@faisalmemon285 How so? Does that mean you also think Gladiator is one of the worst movies ever made, given their similarities?
@@Gutslinger Just because they have similarities does not mean Patriot is good. Look at the similarities between Farce Awakens and ANH. By your logic you would make Farce Awakens a masterpiece.
