  • My Paperblanks Aurelia Flexi was one of the first journals I ever purchased, but it had blank pages, so when I began bullet journaling and found out that Paperblanks now had dot grid planners, I began planning a purchase. This review mostly focuses on the dot grid planner, but occasionally dips into the Flexi as well. The review is in-depth and covers all the topics listed below, which allow you to jump straight to individual chapters of the review.
    Chapters:
    Paperblanks 02:30
    Colours and Styles 4:11
    Packaging 06:35
    Features 06:59
    Construction 09:53
    Markings 11:28
    Paper 12:58
    Pen Test 14:41
    Environmental & Social Responsibility 16:41

Having worked for Hartley & Marks, the makers of Paperblanks and prior to the Hachette purchase, for nearly 8 years circa 2008 to 2016, i am always pleased when i see Paperblanks love shared.

I hope they stay on a similar path with their new publisher. They're bringing out all these other products now, and I'm worried they'll lose their focus on the journal itself. They're worth protecting - I love my two Paperblanks journals!

What a great and thorough review, thank you! I'm currently using the 'olive fairy' design dot grid journal in the size they call 'maxi' as my diary and found myself nodding throughout everything you stated and experienced. I too wished they'd expand on the designs for their dot grid options but nonetheless I'm very open to be purchasing more paperblanks journals in the future. But I must say that the first buying experience was a bit overwhelming for me as they have so many differences in their journals e.g. the paper quality, the edges, hardcover or softcover, types of closures, sizing etc.
So, again thank you for your review!

Thank you - yes I agree, brands usually have a more consistent paper and design, so it can be a bit overwhelming. So your journal has the 120gsm paper! I've heard a lot of people saying it's not so good. What has your experience been?

Yay ! So happy you finally posted about Paperblanks! I think that they're my favorite notebooks, now, but I'm disappointed in their 120gsm paper, it's meh at best, for me (the one I have has a green fairy cover, though, and it's one of the most beautiful article of stationary I have ever owned). The one I reaaaaally like is the 100gsm paper, but they don't have a lot of options in this weight. I have an unbelievably pretty planner (the cover is a reproduction of japanese kimono motifs) with this paper, and writing with my fountain pens in it feels butter smooth and inks look so, so pretty 😍. And it's surprisingly opaque, really unexpectedly so. The 80gsm feels really good too, but of course it's a lot less opaque.
Also, because I'm a bit of a geek, most of the covers are reproductions of historical, luxurious bindings, or artisanal treasures (carpets, kimonos, bindings...) from all over the world, in addition to the very high quality binding, which makes me so happy 😊. I see you stroking the cover and paper during the video, know that you are not the only one! I often find myself just looking at my pretty pretty planner, and petting the cover!
Oh, and also also, now that I have several of them, I believe that, like Rhodia, they don't have different colors of ribbon assorted to the cover, they have only those 3, and for the notebooks with only one ribbon, I believe they're always red. Like the elastic is always black.
Thank you for your thouroughness, as always, it's very interesting and useful, and I'm absolutely in agreement with your criteria.

I was only ever going to buy the 100gsm, because I've been so happy with my blank page 100gsm. I should have checked in with you - you have lots of info on them! It's a lovely journal and I'm so glad I finally reviewed one.

@@theusefuljournal I'm a bit of a fan, and I've researched them a little too much 😅! But there was a lot of informations I didn't know in your video! Particularly about environment and social responsibility, which is one of the things I appreciate the most in your reviews. Hope you still have fun with your pretty notebook 😊
