It's a west indian martial art (from Martinique here but other islands have their own martial art) and it was created in the same context as capoeira (by african slaves) hence the resemblance. Its roots come from different african martial arts like dembé or senegalese wrestling. There's also stick fighting, but it's more common on islands like Trinidad than it is in Martinique
