It has that enigmatic allure and repulsion, akin to the Lovecraftian eldritch, and it is a common dialectic to have fear of the "other", the "unknown". I think I'm a bit on your side, a bit of an immortality optimist, because simply looking at history there is a sort of acceleration of civilization that would be fascinating to be an eternal part and observer of.
