Don't know if you did the PG version on purpose, but the original lyric is "burn the bitch, they're screaming". She uses the metaphor of Cassandra from the Greek mythology on the Trojan War.
Cassandra was the sister of Paris (who was Helen's lover) and Hector (who Achilles killed in hand to hand combat) who foretold that the Greeks would attack Troy and get into the city (No other army had done so in centuries).
When she was young, she was gifted with being able to see the future by the sun god Apollow. When she refused to put out in thanks for his gift, he curse her so that no one would ever believe her visions.
She warned people that the Greeks would get into the city through the Trojan Horse. The crowds threw things at her a shrieked because they thought the Greeks had left the horse as an offering to their gods.
Her father even threw her into jail at one point to stop her from telling her prophecies.
Troy was then attacked and basically burned to the ground. Cassandra supposedly survived because she was in that jail cell, but when she could finally get out, all she saw was ashes and silence because so many were dead.
It's apparently used as a metaphor for the fact that Kim K or Kanye or anyone from the entire Kardashian family contacted Taylor after it was proved in 2020 that the beef over the recorded phone call had been heavily edited by Kim and that Taylor had been telling the truth the entire time.
"Blood's thick, but there's nothing like a payroll, but they never spared a prayer for my soul"... She's basically saying that the Kardashian family will do absolutely anything to keep making money from fake drama and from exploiting even their own family members.

Likely a coincidence, but Cassandra- the artist Cassie, was dating PDiddy and filed a federal lawsuit that may have opened the can of worms that lead to him being raided as well. For years she was silenced and abused and her career allegedly suffered as a result.

@@melissad807 that is a hell of a cool coincidence though 🙃 Those Greeks just keep echoing through the ages 🥰

I could be wrong, but I think this is about that infamous phone call with Kanye and the events that followed. Kim edited the video to make it look like Taylor ok’d his lyric “I feel like me and Taylor might still have s*x. Why? I made that b**** famous.” Taylor never ok’d it, but Kim produced the edited video that made it appear that she did. Taylor got cancelled, went into hiding for a year, got called a lying snake, social media was filled with snake emojis, etc. She thought her career was over. The truth did eventually come out a few years later, but it didn’t get anywhere near the amount of publicity.

So I think another reason it could be about Kanye/Kim is the line “when the first stones thrown there’s screaming” could be referring to Kanye interrupting Taylor’s speech at the VMA’s. “In the streets there’s a raging riot” could refer to her being canceled. “When the truth comes out it’s so quiet” I agree is about when the whole phone call leaked there was no backlash, accountability for Kim to editing the phone call and being the reason Taylor was canceled when Taylor did nothing wrong.

Yes. Kanye now is more known for unhinged antics than for being a musician but when Taylor was calling out his behavior as unacceptable years ago no one listened to her.

I also think it’s the Kardashians family getting $ off the scandal yet they feign Christianity but didn’t pray for her soul

This song is so underrated imo. Her lower register is so good, and the lyrics, well... WOW!! My favorite phrase "blood's thick, but nothing like a payroll". That should be the Kardashian theme. Pretty sure that's what the reference means LOL. Christian chorus line is most likely Kanye's sermons (can't roll my eyes hard enough).

To add from another comment. Cassandra is from Greek mythology but Taylor is using it as a metaphor for all the times where she voiced her opinion about something. She was criticized for speaking her truth but got ignored until the truth comes out. Rather than she speaks the truth people still shrugged it off like nothing happened. People are using one highly specific example but I’m sure there’s others out there that people still ignore.

I adore the piano accompaniment on this song. The chord changes are so satisfying! Reminds me vaguely of Tori Amos, but less filled with riddles. Tori deals in a lot of weird metaphors and Taylor’s writing is more accessible, which is partly why they occupy different musical niches. Both amazing lyricists though. It’s a very personal song for me, l’ve felt like a Cassandra my whole life. 😅

I believe she is addressing 2 scandals in one here. I believe she is also referring to when (she lost it all) her masters were sold to Scooter Braun. She spoke out against him (mourning warning) and most people in the industry (the town) backed him up… Especially those under his management (payroll). He has since lost all of that power and prestige that he had & people have been leaving his management.

    • @HiSummerWasHere
      @HiSummerWasHere 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

His clients, people who she might have thought of as colleagues if not friends, quietly walked away instead of backing her up. But I think she has to be talking about the Kardashians here too.

Cassandra was a Princess of Troy who promised the god Apollo "favors" in exchange for the gift of true prophecy. Which she got, but then refused Apollo, in his anger he cursed her to be a true prophetess, but never be believed. She tried to warn the city of Troy that they were in danger, no one listened.... We all remember how that worked out for them.

Hey!!! If you wanna get back into reacting to musicals, I think you’d absolutely LOVE the complexity of these two musicals, “EPIC: the musical” and “Natasha, Pierre, and the Great comet of 1812” such cool concepts and things I believe you’d appreciate musically!

“Christian chorus line” is linked to “Sarahs and Hannahs in their Sunday best, clutching their pearls, sighing ‘What a mess’” from But Daddy I Love Him, because they’re just people who talk about her constantly and pass judgement with holier than thou attitudes. It’s also an allusion to a greek chorus, which was a group of actors who commented on the main action during a Greek play, sort of like a group of narrators/commentators.

I believe Taylor is alluding to the phone call Kanye made to her which his wife at that time, Kim, recorded. Kanye later released a song in which he referred to Taylor as a "b*tch." There was some back and forth during which I think Taylor said she never agreed to the lyrics as they were released. Kim edited the tape of the phone conversation to make Taylor look like she was lying and then released the edited version of the tape. That's when public opinion turned against Taylor. Kim said Taylor was a snake, and then Taylor found herself inundated with snake emojis and hateful messages. The negative public opinion, being called a snake, and probably a certain amount of feeling humiliated and embarrassed contributed to Taylor's decision to relocate to the UK. I can't remember exactly when but, at some point, the unedited version of the taped conversation was leaked which supported Taylor's version of events, and everyone realized Taylor had been telling the truth and that she was not a liar or a snake.
Fast forward and a vindicated Taylor decided to use the snake imagery to her advantage, visually and in her songwriting, during her Reputation era. I can't help but think Taylor must have derived a sense of satisfaction from the success that followed her decision to use the imagery that Kim had previously used to damage her.
My guess is the lyrics beginning with, "They knew, they knew, they knew the whole time" and ending with, "But they never spared a prayer for my soul" refers to members of the Kardashian family.
