Coffee & Compost: How Do I Store Worm Castings?

  • To store worm castings to keep microbiology alive, you need to ensure your vermicompost has darkness, moisture, and a food source in the form of organic matter. Once you consider that microbes like bacteria, nematodes, protozoa & fungi are little animals, it becomes easier to understand how to take care of them.

    I don't plan on having a storage problem since I will likely use the vermicompost about as quickly as it is produced.

    Hi Steve, I started my bin last June and now (MId Feb) bin is full but composting still happening at the top bc still lots of scraps to be broken down. I pulled bag into shed during winter but breakdown is still slower in colder temps. I have never harvested from bottom. Can I leave my bin as is until early spring when I prep my garden beds for new plants? I will check on bin to make sure enough moisture, bedding and scraps. OR do I need to empty most of castings from bottom, and starting building bin back up with worms all in? Thx

    I have several worm bins indoors ,the stackable kind. I did my first major harvest last week and got a giant container of worm castings. The problem I have with bringing in leaves or using leaves is the potential of introducing spider mites into the home. We have a real problem in our area with spider mites and I have had spider mites in the house before.
    Do you believe using shredded cardboard on top would be a better source?

    • @UrbanWormCompany
      @UrbanWormCompany  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's certainly better than nothing. The organic matter within the screened castings will likely be a good food source. Just keep them out of UV light!

      You will need air and moisture to maintain life in your casting, and not too much of either or you’ll have problems. Other videos I have seen recommend a few hole above the level of the castings.

    How about mixing the worm castings with wood chips that have been at least 50 percent decomposed?
    I compost wood chips in bins in my basement for use in a seed starting mix because they are very light and airy.
    When I sift them at one point I typically still have some smaller wood chip parts left over that have not entirely broke down yet.
    Would mixing them with the castings be an ideal food source when storing the castings?
    I also use an old chest freezer to control the moisture in my decomposed, sifted wood chips till I am ready to use them for my seed starting mix and would use the same system to maintain the moisture when storing the castings.
    Your thoughts on this would be appreciated.

    So, how do you add worm castings to the garden so that they benefit the plants the most? If I just lay the worm castings around the plants on top of the soil, they will be exposed to the sun. What is the proper way to use the worm castings outside in the garden?

    Hi from Mississippi! I have a question about the Molasses. Is unsulfured molasses required? I have dry molasses we use to make our own deer mineral blocks but it doesn’t specify whether it is unsulfered or not. My leaves aren’t composted enough yet. I used a little bit of them to make up my bedding recently and my worms tried their best to escape. They’ve never done that before. Any help is appreciated. They say you’re the Guru! 👍

    • @UrbanWormCompany
      @UrbanWormCompany  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ha! Definitely not a guru Sheila! So I'm unsure what you'd actuyally be using the molasses for. I have only ever heard of it being used as a food for compost tea....even then my worm tea "guru" Troy advises against molasses as it produces a boom and bust for microbes. I would not add anything sugary like that directly to a worm bin. I hope that helps!

    • @SheilaG971
      @SheilaG971 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@UrbanWormCompany, thank you for your quick response! And I’ve listened to many of your vids and I agree, there are indeed 2 guru’s among you! 🙌 In clarifying my question, I have 5-100 pound feed bags, the breathable type, full of fresh castings. I was wondering about one of the alternative ways mentioned about using molasses to keep them “alive” for awhile. I don’t have any composted leaves right now although I’m sure I could get some but using molasses to do the same thing was more appealing. I saw one person mix the liquid molasses with water and spray it on his castings that he harvested. The ratio was 2-3 tablespoons to 32 oz of water. What say you…and Troy. 💫 and if that’s not a good thing to do, should I just apply composted leaves on top of the castings?
      I ordered a cool microscope to try and see the actual castings under it. I’m so excited to get it tomorrow. They look like black gold so they should be awesome and I want to preserve them as long as I can. Thank you guys so much!

    Are there types of dried leaves you shouldn't use, ie: gum, pine or bamboo leaves?

    • @UrbanWormCompany
      @UrbanWormCompany  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd avoid black walnut as the leaves will have juglone. Pine won't really have deciduous leaves. Not sure about bamboo or gum. I would imagine they're fine!

    If I put castings in a container with holes, the castings dry out. If it drys out, are the microbes are all dead or are some dormant? Rehydration won’t revive some of them? If I keep them sealed, they stay moist. But because of the lack of oxygen, they are all dead? If, in either case the microbes are dead, basically I have worm poop as organic matter that will need an introduction of microbes to be more beneficial? I guess adding compost tea would add microbes that would be beneficial but not replace the loss of the worm gut microbes? Did I get that right? Just trying to understand. Thank you. M

    • @UrbanWormCompany
      @UrbanWormCompany  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi! So here's my take......If there's not enough water, then adding worm tea will help but water would have done the trick just fine. The microbes in the worm tea are very hungry and there are billions and billions of them. If the microbes in the existing worm castings went dormant because their population couldn't be sustained, then adding new worm tea won't really help.
      And well-ventilated castings don't have to mean dry worm castings. Draping a damp towel over the container could be a good way of maintaining ventilation, darkness, and moisture/

    • @UrbanWormCompany

      I'm not sure I'd say useless, but they will certainly have less life than what you would buy from a local producer or even a small business online. The stuff at Home Depot or Lowe's has likely been sitting in warehouses for weeks or more.

    Without autocorrect that would have read vermiculture tea!

    • @UrbanWormCompany
      @UrbanWormCompany  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ha! Yes you could feed them some tea, I suppose, but remember that the tea actually has microbes in it, which are mouths to feed. So if you inoculate worm castings with worm tea, you would actually deplete the food source within the worm castings even faster as the microbes added from the tea would consume it.
