Question to any train engineers: why do trains blow their horns when they’re nowhere close to the crossing? I work at a fast food restaurant and there’s at least half a mile between the 2 crossings from where my restaurant sits yet the trains keep blowing their horns from one crossing to the next and they’re moving very slow (they’re quite long trains w/ most of them having at least 3 to 5 engines). We’re trying to take orders at drive thru and that’s all we hear & it hurts our ears. So, why do trains do that?
I’m not a railroad engineer, but from what I hear, it’s a requirement by federal law. However there are such things as “quiet zones” where trains do not blow their horns, especially in residential neighborhoods.
1. It’s a federal requirement unless a quiet zone is in effect. 2. It depends on the traffic on said road and what type of protection is has. 3. The engineer is doing whatever they want as long as they are blowing the horn.
As a trucker going past a brother's wreck scene I'm sure that was eerie for you.
As a trucker I can't agree more.... My first thought was "yeeeeee ..... that ain't good ....."

There's a high and a low. It may sound different outside the locomotive 🚂
Its always sounds like a diminished chord to you because the train is moving, which shifts the pitch of the horn due to the doppler effect
Probably one of the horns isn’t sounding.
