- The greenhouse technology (GH) is well established for cultivation of vegetables, flowers and nursery growing but the construction cost of natural ventilated greenhouse is major hindrance in its adoption by farmers. The availability of bamboo is abundance in Jharkhand which can be utilized for construction of low cost protected structure. The low cost natural ventilated GH is a simple structure constructed with locally available materials such as bamboo, timber etc. and UV stabilized plastic film & insect net proof material is used as cladding materials. Unlike conventional or hi-tech greenhouses, no specific control devices for regulating environmental parameters inside the greenhouse are provided.
The GH can be used successfully for round the year cultivation of tomato & capsicum by providing desirable environmental condition. But the major challenge occurres during summer season when air temperature and light intensity is very high. In the Jharkhand conditions ambient temperatures in summer generally exceeds 330C, so evaporative cooling is the most efficient means of GH cooling, which can lower the GH temperature below the ambient air temperature but it cannot be used in low cost natural ventilated GH. The option available for cooling the low cost GH is natural ventilation and shading/reflection screen but the temperature inside the GH could not be reduced or maintained even up to open field temperature using above options. The shading/reflection screen used for reducing the temperature also reduced the light intensity below required level for cultivation of tomato/capsicum because light passes through cladding material (UV stabilized film) and shading/reflection screen. In detachable roof GH structure (except roof) is covered with insect net proof material (40 mesh), but the roof is covered with UV stabilized film (200 micron) during rainy season (July-October) & winter season (November-February) and shade net material (green and 50%) during summer season (March-June). The developed structure work as a greenhouse (November-February), rain shelter (July-October) and shade net (March-June).
The specification of structure, length: 12 m, width: 6 m, side height: 2 m and central height: 3 m (Inside door: - width: 1 m, height: 2.2 m) and compartment for double door structure: width: 2 m, length: 2 m and height: 2.2 m (outside door: width: 1 m, height: 2.2 m). The estimated construction cost of the greenhouse is around Rs. ` 300/m2, and can be constructed locally.

Detachable roof concept is very good where we can detach plastic material ( useful for both winter and rainy season farming) from top of the roof and replace it with shade net material for summer farming so never a need to use sprinkler systems (on top of the roof), chimneys/exhaust fans and foggers. Concept is wonderful at low cost but any practical field example where the farmers successfully implementing by replacing plastic with shade net when required.. Let us know so that we can implement the same in andhra pradesh.

The brief details of this technology is given in write up. The technology is explained here with model only but before that experiment is concluded at experimental research field (GH area, 72 m2) and a lot of work has been done to come at this stage. The design presented here is peer reviewed and published in research journal.
We have designed for small land holder farmers, who can use low cost GH, we are not using any gadget for cooling of GH. In future, we will be testing this concept on bigger size GH. If you need more details information, kindly inform me.

You have raised good questions.
There are many factors which affect the temperature drop during summer. You have to keep in mind that temperature is not only issue during summer but also high light intensity.
The concept is validated for low cost GH and temperature drop was between 1 to 3°C depending upon outside condition.
We are under process to test the same concept with medium cost GH with variation in side and centre height with EC cooling system using fogger.
The shade net covered only during summer season and it is not big issue.

Sir jo crops self pollinated nahi hai uske liye to pollination me problem aa aajaega aur manually pollination krwana large scale par possible nahi hai . Sir mere question hai ki pollination k problem ko green house me kaise address karenge?

Thank you for your interest. Nice question. It depends on which crop you are cultivating. For example in tomato, self pollination is possible. But in cucurbits, we can use manual, device & bee pollination methods. The breeding company are also developing variety especially for GH condition. A lot of reading materiel, you can find through internet.

Thank you very much. We have done work keeping Jharkhand in mind. We have done on low cost GH & area was around 72 m2. But we can construct the bamboo GH for area upto 150 m2. The basic principle remains same and I expect that it should also work for bigger GH. But till date we have not worked on bigger GH but in future there is plan to test the concept for bigger GH.

You have raised valid question but rain during summer season is not big problem in our region.
It can vary from region to region and if it is heavy then plastic film which is used during winter and rainy season can be used alone or with shade net material.

Thank you very much for your interest. The price given is including bamboo & insect net. It may vary from place to place depending upon input materials unit cost. The price of low cost structure looks low but it depends upon way it is constructed, input materials used, side height & central height etc. It may be that at your place the price will be somewhat different but certainly it will be lower than medium cost greenhouse.

Parthenocarpic cucumber protected structure ke liye available hai, producing fruits without ever being pollinated A lot of reading materiel, you can find through internet.
