There’s a similar fort, Macomb, that you can see right under Chef Menteur pass on highway 90. It’s an overgrown fortress that apparently the city wants to restore. Built in 1820 at the end of the war of 1812

Always love exploring this fort. Up until the 1940's it sat on marshy land but still land. When they dug the shipping channel south of it....the erosion rearranged the whole map. Even the city of Shell Beach had to be relocated further south. That place will be there forever if left alone. It's survived everything.... including Katrina. Katrina did absolutely nothing to it.

There is the remains of on old fort called Fort Montgomery 6 or so miles from my house located in a neighboring town. To the locals and anyone who has studied the history of the fort all know it as Fort Blunder. Named as such because the first fort was accidentally built over the French border into Quebec. The fort that is currently there is the second fort to be built after the first ones botched placement. I've been to the ruins of it several years ago when the property owner had an event open to the public so everyone could see it without having to sneak in. It was one of the few forts of its' type to have a draw bridge going over a moat which wasn't a very common thing for US forts from what I've been told. Which made it even cooler IMO. :)

    • @messire9837
      @messire9837 ปีที่แล้ว

Moat? Then also French. I'm into Franchising sinking Canada back as a matter of act. Can't you sea? Aye, aye, aye, sole tea!
"I don't often retake Franchised lands but when I do, it's perfectly legitimate".
Or else? Pay me for those Frontenac copyrights all over the frozen place. (No, I don't care about Lauriers, it's more of a roman thing, all of that. I'd rather choose Francis the first's fart in a somewhat general dire action over any laurier you spitting in glitch madlads could ever muster from queerland.
Ain't that right, Athos? Mmmmh? Yeah, yeah, yeah, shuddup and keep drinking whines, for that's even better, my good friend.. Ha, ha, ha!

I wouldn't say America was "paranoid" during the early to mid nineteenth century in regards to coastal defenses. Definitely very aware of likely threats and how vulnerable we were with the newly acquired southern states along the Gulf Coast especially as you mentioned at the Mississippi river Delta. My sons and I just visited Fort Travis a few weeks ago near Galveston and even though it didn't see active combat it's clear why such a fortification was installed all the way through the end of WW2.

Thanks! As an air crewman from Coast Guard Air Station, New Orleans I flew over this fort many times but had no idea of its' meaning or significance. It just seemed odd that a brick structure would be out in the middle of nowhere. 50 years later...now I know!

Across Bayou Yscloskey from the fort, you'll see some old concrete foundation ruins. That was an anti-aircraft gunnery training facility during World War 2. I've fished by it and explored it many times. I only found one article from a local interview and one photo of it online. They would tow targets over Lake Borgne with airplanes and fire at them. If your research old oil field lease records, it was reported that unexploded munitions could still be out in the lake. I would love it if someone knew more about that facility and had any photos or stories about it. That was still before they cut the ship channel so Shell Beach was closer to the fort, at that point in time.

The Battle of New Orleans is one of the most lopsided victories for the American Army in our nation's history. The British suffered over 2000 casualties in the battle out of an 8000 man force, while the US suffered only 71 casualties out of a 5700 man army. It was this battle that made US forces commander General Andrew Jackson an American hero and propelled him to the White House in 1829.
An excellent movie about this battle is The Buccaneer from 1958 starring Charlton Heston as Jackson and Yul Brenner as Jean LaFitte.

It covers the eastern sea approaches to New Orleans. A force could land there and proceed overland and not have to fight up the Mississippi river, however it would be restricted by draft as those waters arent deep.

    • @patrickmascair5666

The Gentilly Plain was a prime landing site back in the 1800s. Andrew Jackson had to always guard against a landing there. Having a fort located there would have made an amphibious landing VERY problematic. It must have been a relief for him when the British committed to a southern approach along the Mississippi River.

I grew up in the city of Chalmette Louisiana I never heard a Ford Proctor in my entire life or anything to which you have just reported on though when I was taught in elementary school about the Battle of New Orleans it was off of that of the Mississippi not lake born no what I thought about the city of New Orleans surrendering in any way during the American Civil War I would suggest you reference the movie buccaneer both versions they did better accuracy and It was by Hollywood

Cool little history point. Little tip for you though ... Stop zooming and panning on your map screens, stop and actually draw a circle around what the heck you are talking about. I watched this twice and still have no idea where the thing is other than the mouth of some lake off New Orleans... Thanks for the vid though.

Square Forts were made obsolete in the 14th Century with Bastion forts becoming the fort of choice based on Cannons destroying square forts with ease. This either was not built as a fort or it is anomolous.

Being a New Orleans resident I appreciate your video a lot!! Nicely done, however, your music is droning and off putting and takes away from you otherwise great video.

These forts your talking about are star forts. What that means is they originally were not military forts. They were something else. Please research star forts they’re all over the world
