Goth is influenced by morbid ideals, vampires, cool shades (purples, blues, black), and softer music (synths and soft bass guitar). Alt is a pretty wide range but true alt music is a bit more angry and have more of a rough look. E-girl is *not* a music genre, it's mostly jfashion and mall goth mixed together. I think all the different styles that have labels are so cool and aestheticallly pleasing, but these comments are exactly why I'm afraid to label the style I'm going for 💀🤚 I'll probably just call it alt and keep it moving-
yeah, because people want to water down music based subcultures to outfits and appearance. most genuinely alt, punk, goth, and emo ppl dabble in all sorts of fashion, and just wear what makes them happy, the same way they will dabble in whatever music genres they enjoy. if someone identifies as goth, it is likely because that is the majority of the artists they enjoy and listen to, and secondarily, they might also “dress the part”. that said, there are lots of nuanced differences between the different ways of dressing alt, but they are just that, small nuanced differences. because of that, most people don’t bother labeling themselves, but might label what influences a specific outfit might take. mall goth, emo, and scene all began to blur together by 2010, so it is hard to put distinct borders between one and the next. the same is true of all of the gothic styles, they are somewhat on a spectrum of like cyber goth to lolita goth, with trad goth being like the dead center. but across that spectrum, the in-betweens become blurred. so while it is easy to decipher cyber goth from lolita goth, vampire goth and romantic goth have a lot of crossover, making it difficult to concretely say things are one or the other. labels are pretty pointless, I personally avoid them, but if they help you to find a community that you enjoy, that’s great! I would just recommend that you remember that there is no reason to force yourself into a narrow box just so that you “fit your aesthetic”. that is the opposite of the point of counter cultures. they are supposed to allow you to feel free to express yourself and explore whatever makes you happy. have a nice day :)

I literally can't find information on how to look alternative though 😭 My usual outfit is: interrupters tank over Collared white shirt with black pants that have a ton of pockets and red converse with 2 chain necklaces and a jean chain IS THIS ALTERNATIVE IDK I also can't have makeup yet I have the rest of the stuff like the political beliefs and listen to punk, goth, indie etc music

As for someone who‘s in the goth scene since i was 13 i‘m really pissed. First of all, it‘s not alternative goth style. Its just being goth. Being goth is a lifestyle, not a fashion. Lastly, this whole outfit and makeup has NOTHING to do with a goth look. This is a wannabe alternative style, it‘s obvious that no research on goth culture was done whatsoever. It looks more like: „i used to bully goths at school but now that it‘s fashionable it‘s ok to steal their style and act like it‘s cool“
There is a better way to go about saying what you said. As someone in the scene, I do agree. It is more than fashion, it is music and lifestyle. However, she is simply going off of the "alt" aesthetic she sees on TikTok. I don't like when people do this either, but there is a better way to educate someone about the nature of goth and other alternative subcultures that isn't just ranting about it. I don't think she meant any harm, here it is you that is causing problems.
