I’ve always been a Dr.J fan but Bird was something different from the rest of the league. I just wish those 2 played against each other in their prime. Now that would have been worth the price of admission.

I saw the game when Larry and Doc were battling back and the camera man showed Bird saying something to Dr.J that clearly upset Dr.J . The next time Larry tried to gard Dr.J. The Doctor did a poster slam dunk on top of Larry's Bird head and face. Larry got upset said something back to Dr.J. And that was it Dr.J fired a heymaker blow directly to Larry Bird face. Larry didn't say another word and avoid the Doctor. Larry Bird is a great player although Dr.J is a straight up non trash talking good sportsmanship athlete. In perspective Bird behavior that game was if he was playing the Detroit Pistons.
That Dr. J would hit a man being held back shocks me not. I met him when I was selling stereo equipment in the early 80's in Seattle. We threw him out of our store because he totally mistreated a young woman whomhappen to be disabled. He mocked her. Totally spineless. ZERO respect. for the man.
Larry Legend could talk the talk but he ALWAYS backed it up. Most clutch player in NBA history. The King of the 40/50/90 club. He played back when basketball was great in the era of the Superstars. Ya' know what? He beat em' all! He's the only one who can say that. The only one to win MVP, Coach of the year and executive of the year. I have Jordan as #1 G.O.A.T, Larry #1A. 🏀
All the points scored, all the assists, rebounds, great passing, great defensive plays yet ppl still say unathletic, bull butter, you don't shoot over kareem and many others being unathletic, you don't drive the lane and score on some of the Great defenders being unathletic. He was athletic he was smart, quick and had one of the greatest basketball minds in history.only his back stopped him.
I just can't watch Today's NBA PLAYERS!!! But I can never get enough of Larry Bird. Watching Larry Bird and growing up playing Basketball 🏀. We played physical and no blood no Foul. It's just PATHETIC to try to watch the NBA today can't, won't not going to WAIST my time on B.S.

Yes, and on the stolen pass, against Detroit, D.J. was headed for the goal before Bird had the ball good. Fantastic play on both players' parts. I saw that game and play, real time. It was really "Something Else". Ya'll can say what you will; there has been no better basketball played, than in the 80s. The NBA was loaded and armed to the teeth with truly great players.
I grew up in Boston, went to at least 20 games at the Boston Garden... BIRD wasn't fast, he was Quick, fast handed steals, quick elusive fakes, quickest to the rebounds, quick insane passing. One of the fastest thinkers, playmaker and shot takers. NOT ATHLETICK? He would run 2 to 5 miles a day, games not included. He was relentless.
I was a rabid Showtime Lakers fan in the early 80s.....I LOATHED Bird.....was a huge Magic fan......now, in 2024, my favorite NBA player of all time is Larry. I still have friends from those days that cannot imagine my saying that,......
I get so damn tired of hearing that Bird was not athletic!! Anyone who can get his spot on the floor against the great players he played against time and again was athletic. He certainly could jump. See highlights of his dunks or blocks. He only jumped when needed. How about jumping into the air spinning in the air to square up to the basket and draining his shot.
Larry Bird wasn't athletic by NBA standards, much like Joker and Luka today. They have great fundamentals and high basketball IQ like Bird, things that will always give a player the edge.
Larry Bird was a far better athlete than Byron Scott gives him credit. He was a 6-10 1/2 power forward who dribbled behind his back and moved on the court like a shooting guard. He would have had no trouble playing point guard on offense like Magic did. He certainly got his share of dunks and his vertical leap was actually better than Dennis Rodman. If you think Bird had no athletic ability, look at the film of him playing the Lakers in Los Angeles when Magic Johnson seems to be going for an uncontested layup and Bird runs him down from far behind and blocks his shot at the last second.
Bird was great at regulating his play to get the win. He kept a lot of his potential in reserve and tapped into it when needed. No doubt he could have been more flamboyant, but that was not his game.
Dr.j Larry Bird. One of the most iconic things that ever happened in sports, 2 of the greatest 1 of the end, 1 beginning God, that was great.I've seen it live
22 out of 25 possible with the red white and blue ball worth 2 that stands up as a solid score in any era. The fact that decades later his stories touch generation of all stars. We are bless to have the memories I was an Atlanta fan I don't know what kind of bird he's supposed to be but he gave my Hawks hell.
You would have had to be there to understand how good Bird was, just like you had to be there to know Jordan is the greatest player ever. People never talk about Bird's actual skills. He took a last place Celtic team to first place in the division. The same team from the year previous, before McHale, before Parrish, before Dennis Johnson. In Bird's first 3 years he won Rookie of the year, MVP. and a Championship. In his next 4 years he won 2 more MVPs and 2 more Championships. In his first 3 years with the Celtics he led the team in scoring, rebounding, steals and finished 2nd in assists. In the next 3 years he led the Celtics in scoring, assists, steals, and finished 2nd in rebounds. And you want to compare this guy to Kevin Durant. I like Durant, but it is always a case of the new player is better. Someone tried to tell me Aaron Rodgers is better than Joe Montana. Whatever
Larry Bird was the greatest player that I've ever seen in the 80's and then Michael Jordan & Lebron James showed up. Larry was definitely the BEST player on any court when he was playing.
Larry Bird is like Eminem. People don't want to acknowledge how he dominated this sport where the Majority of the superior players were Black. Like Eminem in the Rap industry people wanted to try to undermine him but his greatness was too much to ignore.

Seeing Bird fighting Dr. J....and it's only a preseason game! Then there's today's era....where opposing players are all buddy buddy with each other and don't have an ounce of that competitive fire.
I followed Dr. J all the way from the ABA, and that is the only time I've ever seen J in a fight. I've never even seen him lose his cool. Matter of fact, I'd seen team fights where J would just walk off the court until the scuffle was over. Bird must have really gotten under Doc's skin.
Great stories about the legend of Larry Bird. I love Dr J, but come on, those were not "jabs," Doc. Those were more like straight right hand leads thrown against Bird who could not defend himself because he's being held by two guys. Not real fair.
That was early in the fourth quarter. Bird had 52 points and he just missed a layup as he threw an elbow at Irving. If he hadn't of had that fight he could have scored sixty some or maybe seventy!
