    lately ive been using Woodland Scenics paint pens on rails and ties. then when dry i lightly apply weathering chalks to the ties to give some variation in colour and simulate spils. Dullcoat to fix the chalks then clean the track

    I would love to see you guys/gals mix both the realistic ballast with this together with some sort of rusted/scrapped train/rolling stock just on the tracks with some bush/forest/mountian land around the track

    Like the pens just used them and much easier than spraying tracks. Sometimes can be hard to get a hold of them in Scotland as many shops here dnt stalk them.

    Great product but you need some variations. Black grease soaked ties, variations in the shade of rusts, and a light brown for sun bleached ties. I use your stuff plus washes for the other effects including wood mold.

    Painting my N scale track the applicator is so big that it smears the ties too. and the paint doesn't stick to the rails but to the top of the rail. which I then have to remove.If I go lower to try and catch the rail sides I am painting ties. The applicator tip needs to be more pointed for N scale

    • @ModelSceneryExpert
      @ModelSceneryExpert  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for reaching out. For a finer point, you can use a hobby knife or scissors to trim the tip to the desired size. Many N scale modelers use this application technique with good results. Thank you for reaching out and happy modeling!

    Could a paper towel work for getting the paint down on the rails also nice product

    • @ModelSceneryExpert
      @ModelSceneryExpert  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We test our products in the manner they are intended to be used. Since, we have not tested using a paper towel, we are not able to offer an
      opinion on the performance of that application.
      You could try testing a small area to see if the method will create the desired effect.

    After cleaning the rails after painting, will the painted colors still show on the top of the rails?

    • @christtking894
      @christtking894 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      try applying it in an angle, you have to do the outsides and then the insides of the rails, use masking tape on top of the rails

    How many 3' flex tracks will one of these pens do?

    • @ModelSceneryExpert
      @ModelSceneryExpert  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Determining how many feet of track a Track Painter will cover is difficult to calculate because the pens are used in a variety of ways and for different scales.
      In our testing, one pen covered 3500 linear feet (lines were lightly drawn and 1/16" thick).

    On my track the spikes are huge and make it hard to paint

    • @ModelSceneryExpert
      @ModelSceneryExpert  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello! If you are referring to our Track Painter, then we suggest that you dab the spikes to cover them with paint. Although, if you are using a paintbrush, then we suggest that you paint your tracks prior to applying ballast. Happy modeling!

    ***** What type of track did you use on that layout?

    • @ModelSceneryExpert
      @ModelSceneryExpert  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We used a layout we built here at the plant more than twenty years ago, so we are not entirely sure of the brand. However the track type is Code 83, Flex Track. The brand is most likely Shinohara, but it could also be Atlas or Walthers. They are both very similar to Shinohara. Hope this is helpful to you!

    Ive found that the steel rail paint pen isn't any good at, you have to give the treated area more then a once over as you can still see the shine coming through when you run the pen nib on the rail !

      You need to paint with matt varnish first fella

  • @mpeterll
    @mpeterll 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great idea but not for everyone.
    Hand-laying track using real wood ties (painted with a random wash of dark stain) and pre-weathered rail, the first two effects are already taken care of.
    For the rust stains, a small brush with a wash of brown oxide and orange paint only partially mixed together, gives a great variety of different rust colors for less money.
    BTW: Reusing components from my previous layout (which had been stored in a damp environment for several years) gave me a supply of very realistically weathered spikes ... real rust.

    What is the point on repainting or demo'ing this product on already painted and weathered track?!?
    Surley this demo would be better shown on newly laid unpainted track!?!

      Stu D'Nutz Hello! We chose to demonstrate the Track Painters on an existing layout with older, already established track, so we could show how realistic you can make your track look regardless if it is old or new.
