Hiking For My Life.

  • One day I was just driving on a dirt road to a hiking trail, but my van got stuck in mud and I had to hike an unknown distance back to anywhere where people were to get help. This video covers thoughts on risky situations and danger, my relationship to the outdoors, and how my TH-cam career has affected my life. I am vulnerable and open in this video, and I hope everyone can at least see where I’m coming from.

    What is Beer in Beautiful Places?
    Hi, I’m Maddie! Celebrating an outdoor adventure with a beer has been a long-time tradition for me, and I wanted to create a platform for like-minded folks to come together. In my videos, I cover all types of adventures and review beer! Topics include day hiking, kayaking, travel, thru-hiking, and life on the road. In short, if you would describe yourself as an outdoorist, outdoorsman, outdoorswoman, hiker trash, nomad, or dirtbag, come on along, this is the channel for you! Welcome and cheers!

    The big take away here Miss Maddie is that you didn't lose valuable energy in panic. Even the most prepared person in the world has to accept that things will not always be in their control. You rolled with the punches and came out on top. 😊 Very proud of you Ranger, and so glad you're ok. Take care brave adventurer ✌️ Btw, the thumbnail is stunning!

    You have the right idea and plan for your channel, you just have the wrong equipment/tools for where you going. You should never get off the pavement or hard packed well maintained dirt road with the type of vehicle you have. Keep doing what you're doing just find more vehicle friendly places. 😊

    Maddie, the reason you are one of my favorite bloggers is that you always show it just how it is. No candy coating here. I am so glad that things worked out OK. As a father (my daughter is about your age) I'd recommend a few things moving ahead. Either a new iPhone or a satelite tracker, traction boards and when you get new tires get some SUV off on off road tires. Not sure if traction boards would of gotten u out but at $75 or so they are good insurance. Keep on trucking Maddie!

    I took my 4 kids in a 2009 honda minivan, with a tent, over 8k miles, for 63 days. Let me tell you.... you are correct- there are plenty of times it seems like all the bad things keep happening, BUT... youre also putting yourslef in places most ppl would never go. So you're bound to experience mishaps and problems that the average human will never encounter. You also make memories that a lot of ppl will never have. You build stamina, you learn, and you keep making those memories.

    My friend and I were just in Utah in June. The temps were crazy hot. Definitely only hiked in the morning. We did one dirt road (Google Maps) led us too. Thankfully, we didnt run into issues, but it was a bit scary, especially once we were miles in and remote. Thanks for not cutting your honest reaction out. So happy you had luck in the end, and you are feeling better about things now. Thanks for always keeping it real!

    • @BeerinBeautifulPlaces
      @BeerinBeautifulPlaces  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes definitely! That mud was where the road forked and that side was worse, but it was really pretty bad all around. Once I got to the solid part, I should have turned around and waited for the first part to dry out, but at the time I didn't know it dried somewhat quickly, so I thought forward was my only option. Hindsight is 20/20!

    Oh. M. G. I just read today that three hikers have died in Utah parks. I was freaking out watching this video. You were so calm; I fear I would have panicked. I am the one who suggested Goblin Valley State Park and Little Wild Horse Canyon. I feel terrible that you had to endure such a stressful situation in your attempt to get there. I am 62 and old-fashioned. I also travel with my husband who is disabled from a stroke. I have an iPhone and navigation in my car. BUT. One thing I always do before we travel is research, research, research - I read numerous websites, TripAdvisor, discussion forums - AND I take notes - especially for driving directions. In fact, I create a very detailed organized 3-ring binder before we leave on a big trip. I can’t help myself. I’m weird like that. Having said all of that, after watching this terrifying video, and being a female who travels to desolate areas with a disabled husband, as well as a female who usually day hikes alone - I realize that I should invest in a Garmin inReach. I’m so thankful you are safe and I’m looking forward to your upcoming videos ❤

    In mud or deep sand you just have to keep moving. Once you stop or slow way down you are kinda doomed. That's the worst kind of mud! Once you do get stuck the worst thing you can do is gun it and spin your tires because it just digs you in deeper. Gotta stop and analyze and observe and plan at that point. It's all physics and there is a solution to everything, just gotta find it. Sorry for the mansplaining but been in that situation a number of times. Glad you made it! These kinds of situations are actually good for you, though it may not seem like it at the time. I got somewhat lost and ended up having to stay overnight in the mountains one time, hiked for 14 hours straight, but that turned out to be a very fond memory in hindsight and taught me some lessons and gave me confidence in dealing with future scenarios. It really strengthened the friendship between me and the person I was with too!

    Maddie, this is the second time I’ve watched this happen to you. I’m sure we all enjoy your adventures but you don’t have an all terrain vehicle and next time you might not be as fortunate. The west is burning up and you really need to think about how to avoid these situations. Please stay safe!

      Agreed! Something I was really trying to express in this video was my frustration I have so many situations like this. But if I avoided dirt roads altogether, I would have a sleep in a parking lot or a paid campground every single night. Thank you for your kind words, I'm always trying to be safe as possible!

    I’m so happy you are ok. You’re so good at talking yourself through difficult situations.
    Think about this Maddie. If you never had tough/challenging situations - how boring would life be. Of course this was a little more than tough. Give yourself some credit. One lesson in future travel is if you think the terrain is sketchy, put it in park and walk it by foot to assess the road. Remember -
    You are BRAVE and we all care about you 💗

Maybe you just need a few extra precautions in place, like bringing a Garmin Mini along or sticking to less remote places so that people are not so far away if you need them. Whatever you choose to do going forward, your safety is most important, and your fans will support you!

    You had me on the edge of my seat for a while - kinda reminded me of a saying I once heard: "You can't place yourself in harm's way and then expect not to be harmed."(Unknown). But to push the envelope simply for the sake of pushing the envelope is almost never a good idea - the results can be Murphy's Law or the law of unintended consequences. On the other hand, all's well that ends well, I suppose - so glad to see you got out of that predicament and to see you(looking good, by the way)back home again in Indiana. Be well, stay safe. 🥾

    • @BeerinBeautifulPlaces
      @BeerinBeautifulPlaces  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The thing is, I wasn't knowingly putting myself in harm's way! I was following directions to a short hike, something I've done countless times before. I could have definitely had things with me that would've helped the situation A LOT, like traction boards, a GPS communication device, and an extra jug of water, but after so many times of not needing those things, they weren't at the front of my mind. Please believe me, I wasn't pushing the envelope for the sake of pushing the envelope at all!

      @@BeerinBeautifulPlaces Thanks for the response - good to hear from you and I fully understand your answer(s). My only concern is for your safety, well-being and peace of mind - being on edge like that is not good for the spirit, the soul, the wallet nor the mind, not to mention the body. There's an old joke about such things: 'A guy goes to a doctor and says, I got my leg broken in three places, what should I do? The doctor says, stay out of those places.' lol. That desert walk experience looked harrowing. Running out of water is a dire situation-your video serves as a reminder of that to us all. If you do want to continue the western desert adventures, I would leave the minivan at home and equip a 4 wheel drive vehicle with off-roading capabilities - there is a TH-camr adventurer named Wonderhussy who travels the western deserts of the US in a 4wd vehicle. Check out what she uses driving around out there. I think a 4x4 would lower your stress levels if you do want to continue on the backroad desert journeys. Even a 4x4 can get stuck in deep mud, though. Maybe bring someone else along for the longer journeys? (Safety in numbers and all that.) Glad you are OK. Your adventures look great on the big screen.

    I think you did extremely well! It’s a learning situation- learn from it, look at the what ifs, get better equipment and give yourself a pat on the back for handling it and getting yourself out of trouble. There’s a TH-cam video of a very well prepared van guy who parked in the wilderness and woke up to discover the wind overnight had brought down trees, cutting him off from the main road! His saw wasn’t enough and the person he stopped after hiking told him - buy an axe! Even well prepared people get caught out

    1st I love factory butte!! We found so much petrified wood and agates! Great places to hike right off the f butte rd, the canyons. Anyway, we went to Dixie national forest, north side of the Bryce Canyon rd, 10 min outside of the park. It 7,300ft elevation and at the end of June it was 32 degrees at night 80 in daytime free camping. The Dixie forest on the way into Bryce has mud puddles that will swallow your car! We went to the escalati national monument and did the slot canyon go to the visitor center and they will give you directions, gravel roads with 1 creek to go through, it was fabulous. You can ask for permission to camp there also. Get cool get elevation a! Glad you got out safely!

    Madison you should carry two chains. Chain chains not cable chains. They wear well on the dirt better than the pavement which is what many drivers go on after the chain regs on mountain passes. Get ones with 3 - 4 tightening cams and try them on for size maybe trimming the excess rail links & use 4 or more black rubber straps with hooks on ‘em. Have a jack that’ll fit when stuck low like you were, and save thousands plus risky strandedness. At least cable chains if clearances are tight. You should have them anyway for highway mountain passes when chain laws go in effect; the ones the locals sell you there are high priced.
