This opening sequence is in the then new Burbank NBC studio...when the dancers come down the hallway you are looking down the same hall on the far left where the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson would soon start broadcasting in about ten years. This was originally broadcast as part of a deal with Pontiac that Gene had to produce specials,,,the first being on CBS earlier that year...that is1959!
How many hours of practice do you think he did for this number????? Till the toes bled?? That's what put him at the top , he wanted perfection and wasn't afraid of driving himself to achieve it though he didn't always believe he was good enough, he'd spend hours late at night writing or trying dance steps, always trying for better, I'm not a professional dancer or actor...I enjoy all of my Gene Kelly movies.. You Rock Gene!!
Not many hours. This was not a very hard routine for Gene or for any tap dancer. Bye the way, I'm the first guy on Gene's right at the end of the dance.
These tapes were found at CBS in a dusty box on the original 3 inch Ampex reels. Most programs at that time were usually recorded over after they were broadcast out of New York...both programs survive by a miracle! You can see them at in their full quality at the museum of TV in Beverly Hills or New York. My 2 cents.
@perryL14 Really?? That is really interesting trivia. There seems to be a host of G. Kelly's taped t.v. appearances in the late 50s & 60s that are "lost" or in dusty boxes & would be better served as refurbished & transferred to DVD/Bluray. I don't get it becz there is a market for it. Does the Kelly family (or trustee) own any film footage?
@@jimhuntley8245 I would-we all would-love to hear any anecdotes. People have told lovely stories about how he taught and mentored them as young performers.
@@susanlloyd7395 I worked with both Gene and Fred Astaire and it was always the same question, Who was better? I always answered the same. "Are you crazy? It was an honor to be dancing with either one of them. They were so different ,both in temperament and style. Bye the way I'm the first guy on Gene's right at the end of this dance. ....Jim
@@susanlloyd7395 It's so nice to know that there are people who know and appreciate who Gene Kelly was. I"ll turn 90 next April. Not to many of us left. Jim
The best smile in Show Business.
Gorgeous Mr. Gene Kelly in top form. Miss you Gene you were marvellous. 🌹
I heard it in "Catch me if you can" I loved it !
The greatest song and dance man who ever lived and hot as a three alarm fire.
OMG, this is great! I'm smiling all the way! Wonderful and magic Gene Kelly!
Color camera was a 342 lbs. RCA TK 41. All vacuum tubes, No transistors
Amazing color tape for the 1950s! It makes all the guest stars look so young again!
May have been recorded on an Ampex VR 1000

Carole Lawrence is always beautiful!
Look at the precision of the dancers. You don't see that now but Kelly would not have tolerated less.

Aren't bowler hats one of the symbols of the Orange Order?
It's funny, but that's often the reaction I have when I see anything of Gene's :)
What is it from?
Those hoofers must have been thrilled to dance with the Master.
Yes we were. The dance was not that hard, but a lot of fun working with the Great Gene Kelly........Jim Huntley
