I think Adam Petty would have been the next great Petty legend. Ashame we lost him way too soon. Richard was a class act in how he raced and especially how he treated his fans. He raced because he loved it.....not sure about some of today's drivers.

He's a one in a million kind of Guy. Met him many times, at his race shop in Level Cross NC, just right up the road from me. Met him at the track in the 80's and 90's and up until the last races I went to @Charlotte Motor Speedway. Always, always signed autographs until every single fan had come through the line. And as anyone can verify the lines were long.
By all rights should have given up many time's. It's takes a special kind of Man who can be at the top of the sport he gave his life to, and lose some the absolute most important things in his life, that being his wife and grandson, and keep on smiling without becoming bitter.
God Bless You Richard Petty, a True Man among Men, and True Hero amongst the hero's of Nascar.

Yes, Bill Elliott did win the race; however, Alan Kulwicki stayed out when Elliott pitted about halfway through the race and led a few extra laps before pitting (They were supposed to pit together, however), ultimately leading to Alan winning what would be his lone Winston Cup championship.

Well said, pal. Well said. I'd like to tell you something about Petty's final race: Dale Earnhardt Sr. and rookie sensation Jeff Gordon were in that race, so the race these three drivers were in reminds me of the final race from Cars.
Here's a comparison of the three drivers to the race car characters from Cars:
Strip "The King" Weathers - Richard Petty
Chick Hicks - Dale Earnhardt Sr.
      Lightning McQueen - Jeff Gordon

I don't care how many other multiple championships guys like Gordon and Johnson have, Petty's career was like the Wright Brothers first flight all the way to the jet age. So many innovations, styles of cars he used, and types of tracks. The multiple champions after the mid 90's had it already made for them. They benefited from all the sacrifices and knowledge from Petty, Earnhardt, Rusty Wallace, and Bill Elliot.

I agree. I am 17 but I am a serious NASCAR buff so I know that Petty, Pearson, Yarlbrough, Earnhardt, Baker, Junior Johnson and the Allisons all made NASCAR what it is. I asked people if they knew about Richard Petty and them that raced before 2000, and they had no clue who he was. I was angry, they claimed they were real NASCAR fans. That is a slap in the face to me as a NASCAR fan if you say your a fan, yet you cant name the person who tops the list in everything imagineible in this sport.

I am 17 (I was not even 2 when this race was run FYI) but I find that watching this race on the VHS tape my parents recorded was so much more interesting than any race you see today. It's pretty much assumed that Dale would've retired after the 2002 season. When he signed his last contract with RCR in 1999, for 3 years, he said then it was the last contract he was gonna sign as a driver. I think he was pretty well set on his next career as a team owner. I definitely agree that even if he tried to stay on a couple more years, he'd be retired by now because he'd be over 60 years old at this point.

I think NASCAR of the 1990s would've been more epic had both Alan Kulwicki and Davey Allison not died in separate airplane/helicopter crashes in 1993. What a day in Atlanta back in 1992 -- King Richard's last race, Jeff Gordon's first start, Alan and Davey both had a shot to win the Winston Cup.
Richard Petty passed the torch that day, no question about it. It was gonna be passed to Gordon, Kulwicki, and Davey. Those three were gonna be NASCAR's top stars along with Earnhardt.

I'm not discounting his accomplishments, but by his own admission, many of his races were won at a time when the majority of drivers didn't have factory support and many of them came a 100 mile/lap races and at a time when there were 45, 50, sometimes as many as 60 races a year. 200 wins, 27 in a season, 10 in a row will absolutely never be touched for this reason. If I rated him in terms of skill, I'd put him somewhere between 6-10. I personally think Lee was the most talented Petty of all.

Indeed, he was; Dale Earnhardt is the second best, followed by Jeff Gordon, Cale Yarborough, and rounding out the top five, Junior Johnson.

Dale Sr. and Richard Petty will NEVER be beaten. In the NASCAR carreer standings. It's Petty and Dale Sr. tied it first, with Jeff Gordon 2nd.

When Richard retired, Kyle just couldn't keep the legacy going. He either wasn't good enough, or got choked out by Earnhardt and Gordon. If Adam had survived, I think he would've been the true successor.
Now, Thad Moffitt is the last hope for the Petty legacy before it gets snuffed out by Kyle Busch. 200 wins my ass. Most of those wins came from Buschwhacking.

@88888888888anonymous Jimmie Johnson has won five championships by being the best driver in the last ten races and the tenth best in the previous twenty-six. Richard Petty won seven championships by being the best all year round. He is the KING, Jimmie will never even come close.
